The Rathaus was designed by Friedrich von Schmidt in the Gothic style, and built between 1872 and 1883. On the top of the tower is the Rathausmann, one of the symbols of Vienna. Facing the Rathaus is a large park, the Rathauspark. There are 331 steps to take you up the City Hall Tower which measures almost 98 [m]. Two spiral staircases up 256 stone steps and then another 75 to the highest point. Emperor Francis Joseph made a condition that the City Hall Tower was not to be higher than the 99 [m] spires of Votivkirche. So Friedrich Schmidt had to resort to a ruse to build higher still: the Tower itself is only 97.9 [m] high. It is the statue of Rathausmann placed on its top which makes it a total of 104.3 [m].

Wien ist gleichzeitig die Bundeshauptstadt und eines der 9 Bundesländer der Bundesrepublik Österreich. Das zwar kleinste Bundesland ist mit seinen ca. 1,68 Mio. Die größte Eventlocation im Freien bietet der Wiener Rathausplatz vor dem historischen Rathaus. Zwischen Burgtheater, Parlament und Universität lädt der Platz vor dem Rathaus das ganze Jahr über zu Veranstaltungen ein: Im Frühling sind es die Festwochen, im Sommer das Openair Kino und im Winter der berühmte Weihnachtsmarkt.

Christmas Market in Rathaus! (Vienna, Austria)
Vienna is one of our shorter stops this trip, but one of our favorites! It's a beautiful place and lively during the Christmas season. The streets and markets were packed with people. Come with us and we head out from Prague on a very comfy train to Vienna, where we will stop by the night market, get some grub, and do some sightseeing.

Superb exhibitions and a dazzling array of events, concerts, operas, operettas and the hit musical Dance of the Vampires promise a New Year's Eve program brimming with excitement throughout the day and night.
On December 31, Vienna's old city center transforms into a giant party zone: From 2 p.m. in the afternoon to 2 a.m. the following morning, top entertainment is guaranteed by the New Year's Eve Trail in the city center, at City Hall Square and in the Prater. Along the New Year's Eve Trail, dozens of gastronomes serve you punch and culinary treats. Numerous areas provided entertainment with show programs, waltzes, operetta, rock, pop, DJ lines and hit music. The classical area on Graben is a popular fixture. Vienna's dance schools offer crash waltz dancing courses here during the afternoon and transform Graben into an idyllic open-air ballroom. A large firework display will be held on City Hall Square and in the Prater at midnight.
A unique New Year's atmosphere can also be enjoyed on a boat trip along the Danube, at the New Year’s Eve Ball at the Hofburg Vienna (Imperial Palace) and at New Year galas held in City Hall and the city's leading hotels. The Majestic Imperator, a palace on rails, invites everyone to go on exclusive rides into the new year, while Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss is performed in time-honored tradition at the Vienna State Opera and also broadcast live on the outdoor screen.
New Year's Day in Vienna will be greeted in classic fashion with a morning hangover cure brunch - featuring the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Day concert on a big screen - in front of City Hall (from 10 a.m.)

Vienna has a well-developed public transport network. Buses, trains, trams and underground lines will take you almost anywhere in the city in no time at all. Vienna public transport Wiener Linien operates five underground lines, 29 tram and 127 bus lines, of which 24 are night lines. Night lines only operate between 0.30 am and 5 am. On weekends and public holidays the Vienna underground remains at the service of its passengers all night. The Wiener Linien vehicle fleet currently consists of over 500 tramcars and more than 450 buses.
Vienna public transport is part of the Verkehrsverbund Ost-Region VOR (transport association for Austria's eastern regions). Verkehrsverbund Ost-Region is split into eight zones and includes parts of Lower Austria, the Burgenland and all of Vienna. The city of Vienna accounts for one full zone or core zone (Kernzone or Zone 100). A single ticket is valid for travelling one way in one zone. You may change to different lines in the course, but you may not interrupt your journey. Single tickets can be purchased at a price of EUR2.20.(wein.gv.at)
