I have a real treat of a meal and video for you today - this I can say is one of the best meals and experiences I’ve had in a very long time - combining both the amazing culture of Bali, Indonesia, and the incredible Balinese food in one.
Puri Banyuning, Bongkasa, Bali - Andre is part of a Balinese Royal family, and he invited us over to their family palace grounds. I was immediately blown away by the palace grounds, the beauty of the architecture and the lush greenery of Bali.
After walking around for a while, and getting dressed in a local Balinese sarong, it was time to get started. The chef at the Palace is an insane cook, and cooks so fast and so expertly, it’s amazing to watch him.
We started cooking an Indonesian food Balinese feast including some of the best Balinese dishes like sate lilit, tum ayam Balin, lawar, ares soup, and be lindung. Also part of the Royal Balinese food experience was how the food was displayed and decorated - it was nothing short of incredible to see and to eat!

One of the tastiest Indonesian Balinese dishes you have to eat when you’re in Bali, is ayam betutu. It’s a dish of chicken that’s caked in spices, and then traditionally, braised and then smoked. The result is a flavor overload of spices and tender chicken.
For this video I went to eat at a legendary Balinese food restaurant called Warung Nasi Ayam Ibu Oki. There are a number of locations around Bali, but I went to the branch at Nusa Dua which was close to where I was staying at that time.
The staff were all very friendly, and I headed into the kitchen to see all the assembly action - all the food being dished onto plates. At lunch time, Warung Nasi Ayam Ibu Oki can get pretty packed, both with takeaway order and people eating there.
I ordered two different dishes, the nasi ayam betutu, and nasi ayam complete, rice with chicken and all sorts of different side dishes. Both plates of food were superb. I would highly recommend it, for excellent Balinese food when you’re in Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia.
Total price - 85,000 IDR ($6.28) - for 3 plates of food, water, and 1 coconut water

Lawar is a traditional Indonesian Balinese dish of which there are many variations, but typically it contains shredded coconut, and some kind of meat, and as I would find out and learn myself - pig’s blood.
Ayu is such an impressive cook, and for the different types of lawar, she mixed and matched all the ingredients, and mixed up everything with her hand to create these incredible salad like coconut mixtures. I didn’t know this until Ayu told me, but the traditional versions of Balinese lawar typically contain some raw blood mixed in, which creates a type of sauce.
After Ayu mixed up a bunch of different types of lawar, we sat down for what was easily one of the best meals I had in Bali, Indonesia. The food was impressively delicious, and the love that went into the cooking was also a huge contribution to what made this meal so special. This is one of those meals I’ll never forget.

Just arrived in Bali (going to attend all the classes and talks on raw vegan food at the @baliveganfestival) and our first meal was at Sayuri's. I first discovered her when I was doing research for my laksa recipe and found she had one too. Ever since then I've been following her Instagram posts.
And then friends and loads of vegan blogs started recommending Sayuri Healing Food so I was determined our first meal in Bali would be here. We weren't disappointed at all.

NOTE: I was doing some work for Accor Hotels (part of Sofitel) and they invited me to stay for a few complimentary nights and I didn’t pay for this buffet. However, all thoughts and opinions are my own, and I chose to make this video on my own.
I definitely haven't been to all the buffets in Bali, but there have been many that say, for the quality and variety, the Sunday brunch buffet at Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua, is probably the best of the island - and after eating there, I have no arguments - it was an outstanding buffet!
My wife Ying and I arrived to the buffet right as they opened for brunch on Sunday, and immediately we walked around to see all that was available. Sofitel is a French hotel, so you can count on there being plenty of French food, bread, pastries, and cheese. But you’ll also find a great selection of Indonesian food and Balinese food, and my favorite station, which was the grilled Balinese style seafood station.
This is one of the huge buffets that I only wish I would be in my early 20’s again, to be able to eat non-stop - but unfortunately I fill up much faster than I did back then.
I’ve eaten at 2 Sofitel brunch buffets now (the other in Manila: and what I like about Sofitel buffets is that they cook in small batches, and the food is very high quality, while having an abundance of choices.
I didn’t pay for this meal, but I looked up the price…
Starts at IDR 599,000 ($44.33) and goes up with drink choices

Our day starts with a free pick up service. We then go to a local Balinese market where we learn about local produce.
We then head to a local rice field and find out how rice grows. We then go to the Periuk Bali Cooking Class building. We start by making offerings. Then it is time to cook!
We cook about a dozen foods, including sate, chicken curry, steamed rice, and more! We end our day by EATING, of course!
This is a cooking class for beginners. I think it is the best cooking class in Bali! It was a lot of fun, and I recommend it to anybody visiting Bali.
The price is 35000 IDR.
