Opal miner Graeme Dowton is a remarkable man and one of only a few remaining commercial opal miners on the fascinating White Cliffs opal field in the far west of outback New South Wales. His tour of his Red Earth Opal Mine is a great adventure for visitors giving them a taste of the honeycomb of diggings under their feet. Graeme gives a lot of his time in this excellent value tour with a running commentary of wit, knowledge and love of opals -- and finding them!
WHITE CLIFFS OPAL FIELD
White Cliffs, just over one thousand kilometres west of Sydney, is reputedly Australia's first commercial opal field. By Word War One when thousands of miners had rushed to find their fortunes, White Cliffs had already reached its peak. But there are still some commercial miners and hobby miners active there and there is the possibility of valuable opal finds for amateur fossickers. White Cliffs might not be as well known as Lightning Ridge or Coober Pedy but it is just as fascinating and the local community very welcoming -- worth a visit.

White Cliffs is a place in the middle of nowhere in Outback NSW, Australia. There was nothing at all there until a couple of roo shooters found opal in 1889. Why they were there in the first place I have no idea. Jock is one of the inimitable characters found in outback Australia in places like White Cliffs. For $5 he'll show you through his dug-out - the underground passageways of old, and new, opal mines where everybody lives out there. It is cool underground, which is good when the outside temperature is regularly over 40degrees Celsius.
