EXPLORING KEYSTONE, SOUTH DAKOTA
Keystone is a town in the Black Hills region of Pennington County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 337 at the 2010 census. It had its origins in 1883 as a mining town, and has since transformed itself into a resort town, serving the needs of the millions of visitors to the Mount Rushmore National Memorial, which is located just beyond city limits. Keystone was heavily damaged in the 1972 Black Hills flood.
The town took its name from a local mine, which most likely was named after the keystone Masonic symbol.
Keystone Cemetery -South Dakota
Keystone Cemetery (also known as Mountain View Cemetery) sits peacefully on a hilly slope within a wooded area. Keystone Cemetery hides a little known secret to the Black Hills tourists. The cemetery actually has a great viewing point of Mount Rushmore The old cemetery overlooks Mount Rushmore and is the burial site for mine workers and people who died after the completion of the famous carved monument. Although nobody died during the construction of Mount Rushmore, many of the workmen died later of silicosis—a lung condition caused by the dust they inhaled while carving the Stone Mountain.
Gutzon Borglum began his project at age 60 in 1927. The faces were completed between 1934 and 1939. Gutzon died in March 1941 at age 73 -. His son, Lincoln Borglum took over the project and added on the final touches to the masterpiece. The construction ended on Halloween, October 31, 1941.

Hail Storm In Keystone SD
Riding the President's Alpine Slide
We took our kids (ages 5 & 7) for their first ride down an alpine slide in Keystone, SD on our way to Mount Rushmore. This was my last ride down the slide for the day and my first time to ride without one of the kids riding in the sled with me. Unfortunately, I smudged the lens cover just before I left, but you get the idea of what the ride is like.
I was in the fast lane for this run and was going twice as fast as most others (even the ones in the fast lane - and I didn't think that I was going THAT fast). Fortunately, I was given ample wait time at the top so my ride wasn't ruined by catching the person in front of me.
