The former rip-roaring lead-mining town of Galena once produced almost 85% of the nation’s lead, and was the busiest Mississippi River port between St. Louis and St. Paul, a bustle bigger than Chicago. Now, it charm lies in the preservation of its past, one which Galena proudly embraces.
Galena has been cited as having “The Best Small Town Main Street in America,” because it looks like a movie set idealization of Norman Rockwell’s home. Of course, the actual movie theater appeared in the movie Field of Dreams. By the middle of the 19th Century, Galena was one of the richest river towns in the Midwest. But when the lead ran out and the Galena River silted up, the town went into a century-long dive. The townsfolk became too poor to tear anything down. That, it turns out, was its salvation, and today the town appears pretty much as it did when Ulysses S. Grant worked in his father's store on the red-hued street.
Now, that preserved-in-aspic quality is the lodestone, the touro-dollar draw. The street is exuberant with boutiques, bars, reliquaries, art galleries, cafes, ghost tours, trolleys, locals sporting thick, black Ulysses S. Grant beards, and shops specializing in everything “craft.” The old brown brick buildings host handcrafted jewelry, homemade fudge, artisanal cheese, hand-sewn clothing, self-published books, in-house roasted coffee, immaculate confections, stove-popped gourmet popcorn, and, of course, craft beer.

U.S. Army 2012 Chicago Saint Patrick's Day Parade
The United States Army participated in the Chicago Saint Patrick's Day Parade on Saturday, March 17, 2012. Brig. Gen. Alton G. Berry, 88th Reserve Support Command Deputy Commanding General, USAR, participated in the day's activities as a Co-Grand Marshall, including the Old Saint Pats Church where the mass was held, along with a breakfast before the parade. Gen. Berry interacted with the Grand Marshall, Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny, Governor Patrick Quinn who is Irish, Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Catholic clergy from all over the nation. The 14th Sergeant Major of the Army, Sgt. Maj. Raymond F. Chandler III and wife Mrs. Jeanne Chandler, born in Chicago to an Irish-Catholic family, were also Co-Grand Marshalls in the ST Patrick's Day Parade that starts the city of Chicago's parade season. Berry and Chandler cheered on the Army troops as they marched by them in front of the reviewing stand and Sgt. Maj. Chandler is seen singing along to 'The Army Song' as they marched on down Columbus Dr. in downtown Chicago.
Soldiers from the Chicago Recruiting Battalion, Chicago, Glenview and Homewood, Illinois Recruiting Companies; 330th Med. Bde., Fort Sheridan, Ill.; USAREC Future Soldiers; members of the combined 88th Reserve Support Command Band from Wisconsin and Illinois; Roosevelt High School JROTC Cadets; the Wisconsin Military Academy; members of the Sergeant Major of the Army's staff (Msg. Tinley Park is located at 41°34′26″N 87°48′14″W (41.573800, -87.803891).[11]
According to the 2010 census, Tinley Park has a total area of 16.039 square miles (41.54 km2), of which 16.02 square miles (41.49 km2) (or 99.88%) is land and 0.019 square miles (0.05 km2) (or 0.12%) is water.[12] The village lies on the Tinley Moraine and/or the Valparaiso Moraine.

As of the 2010 census,[14] there were 56,703 people, 17,478 households, and 12,793 families residing in the village. The population density was 3,236.9 people per square mile (1,250.0/km²). There were 18,037 housing units at an average density of 1,206.2 per square mile (465.8/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 93.16% White, 1.92% African American, 0.13% Native American, 2.38% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.11% from other races, and 1.27% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.13% of the population.
The top five ancestries reported in Tinley Park as of the 2000 census were Irish (25.5%), German (23.1%), Polish (19.9%), Italian (14.3%) and Dutch (5.3%).[15]
There were 17,478 households out of which 36.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.5% were married couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.8% were non-families. 23.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.73 and the average family size was 3.27.
In the village, the population was spread out with 26.6% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 31.0% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 10.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.5 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $61,648, and the median income for a family was $71,858 (these figures had risen to $70,480 and $84,072 respectively as of a 2017 estimate[16]). Males had a median income of $50,595 versus $34,401 for females.
