Eric's Solo Utah Trip - Zion & Capitol Reef National Parks
In October 2012 I had a fantastic week hiking in Utah. First in Zion National Park, I did the epic Zion Narrows as a day hike (16 miles in about 8 hours), and Observation Point. Then I drove on the amazing Utah State Highway 12 to Torrey, where I joined up with Steve Howe of Redrock Adventure Guides for an overnight backpack trip through some of the best wilderness I've ever seen - Capitol Reef National Park. Here's my story!
Red Rocks Camping in Utah - Explore - Cook - Camp - My Life
I love camping the red rocks of the desert in my home state of Utah. Follow me as I explore the area. There is beauty in the barrenness. I did some exploring and saw some beautiful scenery. I cooked a delicious roast on the coals. My Poncho Shelter System on this trip was used to provide a very comfortable sleep. I didn't really need it but I did use the PD Shelter over the fire, it provided extra comfort at night around the fire. The desert can be both very hot and a few hours later cold, it is a place of extremes. Check out our Ponchos, Osni Cloaks, Blankets, Tarps, Liners, etc on our website HTTP://wildernessinnovation.com Thank you !!
The Red Canyon road Arches, Utah (on the way to Bryce Canyon), United States.
On the route (Scenic Byway 12) towards Bryce Canyon (a must see) you pass through Dixie National Forest and these two rock arches in the Red Canyon.
Whilst they ARE rock arches, they have been reinforced with sprayed concrete painted to match the underlying rock.
The first couple of clips are a walking-level view with a few car mounted views of the arches and the short Red Canyon at the end.
Scenic Utah 12 Time Lapse Drive - The Entire Byway - With Captions - Dashcam Drivelapse
Like Drivelapse? Friend it!
This drive begins at the southwest end of Utah 12, and travels all the way to the northeast end at Torrey, Utah. It's a rather long drive, but it's one of the most scenic highways in America, and I think you'll enjoy it. I've included some captions at the bottom of the screen, to help you know what you're looking at. You'll also find a clean version, without captions, in my YouTube channel.

Biking the Red Rock Canyon Scenic Loop
We decided that on this trip to Las Vegas we'd leave the Strip, and a bicycle ride in Red Rock Canyon seemed like a great way to do that.
Red Rock canyon has a wide, mostly smooth 13-mile Scenic Loop through beautiful desert scenery. This video may give you an idea of how beautiful it is, but as with so much natural beauty you have to go there to actually experience it.
One great thing about the loop is how often the view changes. The park has so much variety, and the curves in the road and changes in elevation lead to some of the most dramatic changes in scenery I've seen on a bike ride--cresting a hill just as it curves and seeing the valley stretching out below was amazing.
We considered driving the 10 hours to Vegas with our bikes on a hitch, but we decided it made more sense to rent bikes instead. We ended up renting pedal assist e-bikes from EzRideLV (a small, family-owned company that we had a great experience with and would recommend). We picked up the bikes at a parking lot just on the edge of the Las Vegas development, and biked a few miles along Red Rock Canyon Road (a road with fast cars but a wide bike lane) before arriving at the Scenic Loop itself.
Inside the park the loop is very wide and one way, so there was plenty of room for cars and bikes without feeling crowded. Although there were plenty of cars, there were long stretches when it felt like we had the whole park to ourselves.
We ended up biking about 30 miles in total, including a few side trips.
We went in early May, 2019. This time of year seemed perfect--it was warm, but with the breeze we never felt too hot. There were also a significant number of wildflowers growing adding even more layers of color. I'd like to return at other times of year to experience how the park changes through the year.
With the hills, I was glad we were using the pedal assist e-bikes; we got a decent workout but were never struggling too much. The e-bikes we used were great, in some ways better than our own e-bikes. I was impressed with how long the battery lasted--after the 30 mile ride that included a lot of hills the battery level had barely budged.
Here's a PDF of the park newsletter that includes the loop:

This was my fantastic travel journey in Moab, Utah which I want to share with you guys. I visited The Arches and Canyonlands National Parks and went Hiking, Biking,River Rafting and shopping etc. I enjoyed my 14-day holiday with the scenic and amazing environment that became my awesome journey. Last but not the least, I met very nice and welcoming hosts with my journey and I definitely will come back!
Why Capitol Reef National Park
Hey you guys! Thanks for joining me on another journey. We are here at Capitol Reef National Park. This is our first time visiting this place, which is considered one of Utah's Mighty Five national parks. The absolutely amazing beauty had us getting out of the rental car and taking photographs even before we were officially in the park proper. We discovered some really cool rock conglomerate that almost looked like rock candy. We liked it so much, we had to take some with, but figured we should ask the rangers at the Capitol Reef National Park Visitor Center if they can be taken and what kind of rock it actually was. Upon arriving at the visitor center, Ranger Jamie gave it her best guess as to what the rock was--quartzite and sandstone--and then she helped us figure out which hikes we'd maybe want to go on, such as the Hickman Bridge Trail, Burr Trail, Goosenecks Overlook, Capitol Gorge Trail, Larb Hollow Overlook, Cassidy Arch, Grand Wash Trail, Cohab Canyon Trail, and Chimney Rock Trail. She also told us about the Fremont Petroglyphs and the Gifford Homestead, informing us that Capitol Reef is famous for petroglyphs and pie. We decided we definitely had to go partake of the freshly baked fruit pies. Ranger Jamie also set the record straight, saying that as long as we weren't within the boundaries of the national park, we could take a couple of rocks--because it's ok to do on BLM (Bureau Land Management) land. The petroglyphs were fascinating, as they brought the past right to us in the present. We met a group where kids were having more fun looking for pennies and other treasure underneath the boardwalk; that was funny. Afterwards we embarked on the Hickman Bridge Trail. What an awesome hike! The varying scenery gave us spectacular views of the Capitol Dome and even walking under and around a baby arch. Hickman Bridge was a unique arch, and from the other side, it actually camouflaged into its surroundings. We then took a drive on Grand Wash Road. It's so amazing that this national park tries to leave so much of its territory more natural & rugged. It was incredible to be able to experience Capitol Reef National Park from down among the red rock cliffs and giant geological formations. We had so much fun with the echo while we had the canyon practically all to ourselves. Near the historic Mormon town Fruita, we found some cool old wagons that had likely been sitting in that area for hundreds of years. That's also where they grow the fruit they use for their famous pies that were quite delicious, by the way! We also drove to view the Waterpocket Fold, which is a formidable canyon that stretches for 90 miles. Most of it is inaccessible to vehicles and unexplored by humans. We firmly believe that even though Capitol Reef National Park is the least known of Utah's national park jewels, it is certainly a geological marvel in terms of the scale of its features!
