2011 Estes Park Film Festival Promo #2
Showcasing 35 of the latest independent films from around the world, the 6th Annual Estes Park Film Festival ( will take place September 16-18 at the Historic Park Theatre in beautiful Estes Park, Colorado at the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park. Built in 1913, the Park Theatre is the oldest operating movie theatre west of the Mississippi and is on the national register of historic places. This September, filmmakers, festival attendees and industry professionals from around the world will travel to Estes Park to enjoy the diverse selection of independent feature-length films, documentaries and short films. The festival will also honor their featured guest, actor Barry Corbin (Northern Exposure, WarGames, Urban Cowboy), with a lifetime achievement award for his contributions to cinema and television.
Featured at this year's opening night party is a special pre-release screening of the Sundance Film Festival Award Winner Happy, Happy from Norwegian director Anne Sewitsky. In Happy Happy, Kaja is the perfect housewife, but she is starved for intimacy. When an attractive family moves in next door she struggles to keep her emotions in check. A new friendship leads to changes Kaja cannot reverse, and as Christmas time approaches it is clear that nothing will be the same again. Other feature-length films include Serotonin Rising from writer Darren Foster and director Tony Perri. Described by the filmmakers as the world's first truly Feel Good movie, Serotonin Rising combines the heart-warming and inspirational story of two TV reporters who discover the secret to a happy and healthy life through the Words of Wisdom from the world's leading scientists, spiritualists and philosophers. Closing out the film festival on September 18th is The River Why starring Zach Gilford, Amber Heard, Kathleen Quinlan, Dallas Roberts, William Devane and William Hurt. A big hit at film festivals across the country, The River Why is the story of 20 year old Gus Orviston, the Mozart of fly fishing, who leaves his big city home in rebellion from his family to live in a secluded cabin on the banks of a wild river. The River Why is a love story about the love of a man for the wilderness, and for a beautiful woman who comes to share it with him.
Documentaries in the festival include the Colorado premiere of Bugeaters from filmmaker and past EPFF award winner Jim Fields. Using tinted rotoscope animation and also staging historic recreations using actors, Bugeaters reveals for the first time the untold story of the first decade of Nebraska football, from 1890-1900, when the first N.U. football players were known as 'Bugeaters'. Denver based filmmaker, Alan Dominguez, presents his haunting documentary Photos of Angie about the brutal killing of Angie Zapata, a transgender teen from Greeley, Colorado who was murdered in July, 2008. Other documentaries include Bring the Riding to the People about volunteers coming together to build municipal mountain bike parks in three very different communities, and the Duplass Brother's (Baghead, Cyrus) musical hero Kevin Gant makes his triumphant return to the music scene in their debut documentary Kevin.
Five diverse and very entertaining programs of short films round out the festival schedule and include the very popular Student Film Program which showcases films from undiscovered student filmmakers representing such schools as New York University, University of Denver, and Lora L. Batchelor Middle School in Bloomington, IN. Other short film programs include the animated comedy Gus from Australian filmmaker Andrew Martin, and the terrifying Nobody But Her about 8-year old Greta and the mystery surrounding her grandmother's strange death.
Many of the filmmakers will be on hand to introduce their films and will be a part of a filmmaker panel discussion on the creative process of getting their films from script to screen. There will also be plenty of parties where attendees can mingle with the filmmakers and special guests. For a complete schedule of film screenings, parties and panel discussions visit or call 970-231-2580. Advance tickets and passes to the festival are available online or at the Park Theatre box office.

Birth of the Moon
Scientists have been reconstructing the history of the moon by scouring its surface, mapping its mountains and craters, and probing its interior. What are they learning about our own planet's beginnings?
Decades ago, we sent astronauts to the moon as a symbol of confidence in the face of the great cold war struggle. Landing on the moon was a giant leap for mankind. But it's what the astronauts picked up from the lunar surface that may turn out to be Apollo's greatest legacy.
When the astronauts of Apollo stepped out of their landing craft, they entered a world draped in fine sticky dust, strewn with rocks, and pocked with craters. They walked and rambled about, picking up rocks that they packed for the return flight.
Back in earth-bound labs, scientists went to work probing the rocks for clues to one of the most vexing questions in all of science. Where did the moon come from? The answer promised to shed light on an even grander question. Where did Earth come from? And how did it evolve into the planet we know today?
The nature of the moon began to come into focus four centuries ago. Galileo Galilei had heard of an instrument built by Dutch opticians capable of seeing faraway things as though nearby. Galileo, in many ways the first modern scientist, saw this new instrument as a tool to help settle a long standing question.
What was the nature of the heavens, and how did the world of men fit within it?
To some philosophers, the moon was a perfect, crystalline sphere of divine substance, free of Earth's imperfections. Galileo, with his telescope, saw a more familiar reality. He noted mountains and valleys on the moon, features like those of Earth.
The astronauts of Apollo lifted off on a series of missions to get a close up look at the moon and perhaps settle the debate. Because there's no atmosphere there, the astronauts entered landscapes that are nearly frozen in time. They could scour the lunar surface for evidence of events going back almost to the time of its birth.
Indeed, eons of impacts had opened up the Moon's interior, leaving a wealth of information strewn about their landing sites. Scientists had already noticed that some large old craters were surrounded by concentric rings. You can see one of the most pronounced examples in this image of the Mare Orientale, captured recently by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, or LRO. The colors show differences in elevation.
The old view was that the impact had melted the rock below. A newer view held that the impactor had actually splashed down on a molten surface. That gave rise to the radical notion that, early in its history, the moon's surface was covered in a vast ocean of magma.
When the astronauts arrived, they found relatively light rocks known as anorthosites. Their presence suggested that heavier material had sunk toward the moon's interior, forcing lighter material to the surface.
The rocks they brought back were found to be strikingly similar to those on Earth, in part because they share forms of oxygen, called isotopes, that scientists regard as blood types for solar system bodies. Then there was this. The moon appeared to be completely, utterly, dry, with no evidence that water was ever present on its surface.

The Unknowns: Mystifying UFO Cases
In this video I delve into the expansive and complicated history of American UFO research. More precisely, the government sanctioned undertaking known as Project Blue Book. Many hundreds of cases were left unresolved upon the project's conclusion in 1969. These were dubbed the unknowns. As someone who is largely unfamiliar with UFO history, I explore a select few of these unknowns in order to understand what makes them so mystifying.

SUMMARY
=======
Colorado ( (listen), other variants) is a state of the Western United States encompassing most of the southern Rocky Mountains as well as the northeastern portion of the Colorado Plateau and the western edge of the Great Plains. It is the 8th largest geographically and 21st most populous U.S. state. The estimated population of Colorado was 5,607,154 on July 1, 2017, an increase of 11.49% since the 2010 United States Census. The state was named for the Colorado River, which early Spanish explorers named the Río Colorado for the ruddy silt the river carried from the mountains. The Territory of Colorado was organized on February 28, 1861, and on August 1, 1876, U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant signed Proclamation 230 admitting Colorado to the Union as the 38th state. Colorado is nicknamed the Centennial State because it became a state one century after the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence.
Colorado is bordered by Wyoming to the north, Nebraska to the northeast, Kansas to the east, Oklahoma to the southeast, New Mexico to the south, Utah to the west, and touches Arizona to the southwest at the Four Corners. Colorado is noted for its vivid landscape of mountains, forests, high plains, mesas, canyons, plateaus, rivers and desert lands. Colorado is part of the western and southwestern United States, and is one of the Mountain States.
Denver is the capital and most populous city of Colorado. Residents of the state are known as Coloradans, although the antiquated term Coloradoan is occasionally used.Unlike its neighbors to the north, west and east, Colorado has been recognized as a strongly socially liberal state. Same-sex marriage in Colorado has been legal since 2014, and it was the second state in the U.S. (after Washington) to legalize recreational cannabis. The state is known for its progressive views on abortion and assisted suicide; Coloradans rejected a 2008 referendum that would have criminalized abortion, and approved a measure in 2016 that legalized assisted suicide in the state, and remains one of six states (along with the District of Columbia) to have legalized assisted suicide. In 2018, Colorado became the first state in the United States to elect an openly gay governor, Jared Polis, in the 2018 gubernatorial election.
