Places to see in ( Bonifacio - France ) Escalier du Roi d'Aragon
The Staircase of the King of Aragon is, with the Grain of sand , one of the tourist attractions of Bonifacio (in Corsica ), and its limestone cliff. The Staircase of the King of Aragon is located in the Mediterranean Sea , more precisely south of the Point of Timon on which was built the citadel of Bonifacio, at the southern tip of the Island of Beauty, and overlooks the Strait named Bouches de Bonifacio separating it from Sardinia .
Seen from the sea, by boat, it appears from a distance as a dark line oblique, all the way up the cliff, and up close like a half-tube hollowed out of the stone. In 1420 , Alfonso V of Aragon claimed the island following the grant of Corsica from Pope Boniface VIII to his father, James II . With Vincentello d'Istria, appointed viceroy of Corsica, he besieged Bonifacio for nearly five months. He completes this thanks to the stairs of the king of Aragon that allows him to prevent the supply of the city. Despite these privations of the king of Aragon, the Genoese colony resisted. According to legend, it was dug in one night by the troops of the king of Aragon Alfonso V the Magnanimous during the siege of Bonifacio in 1420.
More likely, this staircase would have been realized over a longer period by the Franciscan monks to access a source of drinking water located at the bottom of this staircase and a cave below. Carved by the man directly in the Boniface limestone rock ( calcarenite ), this staircase is composed of 187 steps, with an inclination of approximately 45 °.
( Bonifacio - France ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Bonifacio . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Bonifacio - France
