US Route 60 Goes though a Secert Garden
US Route 60 in Virginia has it's head waters in Virginia Beach along the Ocean Front from there it runs runs to Richmond Virginia as a four lane wide highway that was built in the 1950's before Intersate 64. US Route 60 follows interstate 64 with in 50 miles though most of Virginia. Once it gets to Richmond it sankes it's way though downtown Richmond. Once it reaches the Richmond City Limits it becomes a six to eight lane wide highway that goes though Richmond's Suburbs and a river of none stop flowing metal. Once it reaches Powhatan County it narrows down to a two lane highway that heads to Buna Vista Virginia becoming a life line to the outside world. Once it reaches Neleson County it starts to go over the Blue Ridge Mountains by snaking it's way though narrow man made passes that where carved way back in the 1920's.
This video shows rare photos of the people and mules that built US Route 60 in the 1920's. It also shows the peple who made it into a four lane in the 1960's. These photos are from Vdot.
The backaround song is the World is a Secert Garden.

This is a companion piece to Nyal Rockwell,' which appears below. It was the first of a four-part series shot by Pam Partee and edited by John Odell in 1991. Some stories stand the tests of time. This, along with the one about Nyal Rockwell, do.

The Untold Story of Route 66
Photojournalist Candacy Taylor, introduced by San Francisco Chronicle columnist Caille Millner, at the Bay Area Book Festival.
Fans of Route 66 will enjoy listening to historian and travel writer Candacy Taylor share stories and anecdotes about the historic byway. She will also dive into the relatively unknown story of The Green Book, which, during the Jim Crow era, listed Route 66 restaurants, hotels, salons, barbershops, nightclubs, tailors, garages, and real estate offices amenable to serving African American travelers.

Route 66
My version of a song most well-known as the theme from a TV show of the same name in the 1960's.
Route 66 was a main route from Chicago to Los Angels back in the 30's through 50's.
Thx to my sister Rose Ann for suggesting this one!
Barbershops of America - Part 4 Amherst Ave Barbershop
Amherst Ave.
Check out the blog post at
Nowadays barbers put a lot of things in their shop to make it look cool or to give the effect that it’s been around a while. They aren’t fooling anyone. Take one step inside Amherst Ave. Barbershop and you know Joe is the real deal. He’s not trying to impress anyone. Doesn’t have to.
His shop has been growing for over 50 years. What you see on the walls has naturally grown over time. He’s not trying to be cool. He just keeps his shop the way he likes it, and at the same time tries to represent the good people that have been coming in there his entire career. A lot of the stuff in there has been gifted to him by his customers.
At this point though, you probably couldn’t find the line between customer and friend. On the back wall, you’ll see a sign that states you can’t sue Joe if he gives you a bad haircut. Can only imagine that the sign came out of necessity, but people still happily come to sit in “The Butcher’s” chair. So he’s doing something right. Wouldn’t have made it 50+ years otherwise.
Your first trip to Joe’s shop might be a bit overwhelming. With all that’s on the wall, you might even forget that you’re there for a haircut. And there’s zero chance that you’ll realise Joe doesn’t even have a phone. In a world and industry that’s relentlessly connected to Instagram, that tells you a lot. Like I said, Joe is the real deal.
After you get over the initial shock of what you see, and stand around staring trying to make sense of everything, you’ll most likely get a sarcastic comment from Joe. I spent a few hours in there, and still have zero idea of what's going on. Try all you want, you’ll never find a spare inch of wall space. Just doesn’t exist. And like most barbers, their shop is a direct representation of them.
Talk with him for just a couple minutes, and you’ll see there’s a lot going on inside that brain of his. He’s a character among characters. As real and candid a person as you’ll ever meet. Don’t bring an attitude into his shop either because he won’t put up with it. If you’re kind though, he’ll let you hang out all day.
And chances are if you stay, you’ll be entertained. Whether that entertainment is listening to the narrative that Joe provides, or just by staring at the walls, you’ll leave happy.
Back in the mid 1800’s Butte became a boomtown that got filled up with people trying to make a buck in the mines. It exploded with 100’s of saloons, and even had it’s own Red Light District. A lot of that has gone and past. It’s a much more quiet town now, so Joe has had to deal with a lot of change. Somehow though, he figured it all out. As one of his customers says, “we’ve got the original here”. In a place that has gone through so much, The Butcher and his shop have been a constant for 50+ years. They just don’t make too many like Joe. He’s a gift to the town of Butte and the entire barbershop world.

Caltrans Freeway Status Map 1971-2005
DICK MURPHY -- Father of Traffic Management in Los Angeles
After three years as an aircraft engineer during World War II, Dick Murphy brought his expertise to Caltrans on July 1, 1947. With a preference for field work, Murphy was assigned to work in Surveys as an Engineering Aide on the preliminary alignment of the Golden State Freeway (I-5) from Castaic to the Kern County, which includes what now is known as the Grapevine.
In his early years at Caltrans, Murphy said he and his Survey crew would hop into an old station wagon and drive north of Castaic, continuing to Pyramid Lake. Back then Pyramid Lake was just a river, said Murphy, and there was no freeway -- just The Old Road. His team walked the distance from Castaic to the Kern County line over the many years it took to map out the alignment of what many call the backbone of the California state transportation system. Murphy worked in Surveys for the next four years.
In the early 1950's, Orange County was also part of District 7, and Murphy worked on the Santa Ana Freeway portion of I-5 in Santa Ana and Long Beach; on the four-level interchange in downtown Los Angeles and the Hollywood Freeway (U.S.101) -- part of those years in Surveys and partly in Construction. Also noteworthy during his four years in Construction, was his work on the famous Colorado Street Bridge on State Route 134 in Pasadena.
In 1955, Murphy transferred to Design where he served13 years while he continued his education and studied for a Civil Engineering license. He said that getting a good education and a professional license made a big difference in his career. I really encourage young engineers to continue their education and get licensed to advance with promotions and employment opportunities that are available with the State of California, said Murphy.
He transferred to Freeway Operations in 1968, where Murphy said he found his calling. For the next 14 years, Murphy was involved in early studies involving transportation management, congestion relief, ramp metering and automated transportation systems. Murphy is known by many in his field as the father of the Los Angeles Regional Transportation Management Center, (LARTMC) which was opened in October, 2007 -- and he has received accolades and awards for his achievements.
Murphy received a Supervising Transportation Engineer classification in 1982, and was appointed Maintenance Chief through 1989, the year he retired. In 1984, he was asked to return to Operations to coordinate the Los Angeles Olympics traffic strategies. After his retirement, Murphy returned to Operations as a retired annuitant in Traffic Operations, where he remains today.
Dick Murphy has spent his life dedicated to improving the California transportation system, said Frank Quon, Deputy District Director for Operations. He is committed and driven to providing excellence in all of his endeavors. We are extremely fortunate to have him working as an annuitant, and we continue to learn from him today.
