The World Famous Landwasser Viaduct - UNESCO World Heritage Rhaetian Railway in Switzerland
This is a short coverage of the legendary and iconic Landwasser Viaduct in Switzerland during my recent trip there. This massive bridge is located near Filisur station of the Rhaetian Railway (known as the Rhätische Bahn locally). It is part of the Albula section which links the city of Chur and the popular ski resort of St. Moritz. It is a single meter gauge track viaduct, with 6 arches, the highest being 65 meters above the ground, and has a curve of radius 100 meters. Immediately after the curve heading towards St. Moritz, the viaduct directly goes into the Landwasser Tunnel, built into the sheer cliff face. The viaduct was said to be made without any scaffolding and was completed in 1902. All these features make it one of the most iconic structures of Swiss railway journeys.
There are 2 special trains with panoramic coaches that run on this route - the Glacier Express and the Bernina Express. However I did not travel on any of those trains. I took the regular Inter Regio service they had from Chur to St. Moritz and this turned out to be better since the windows open and I could get photos and videos without the reflection of the glass. The video opens with the scene of my train crossing this magnificent viaduct. You can notice how my train driver slowed down for the benefit of those people who were taking photos and videos. All drivers do not slow the train. The maximum speed limit on the bridge is 45 kmph.
There is a Landwasser Viaduct viewpoint which is located about 20 minutes walking distance away from Filisur Railway station. So few days later, I came back to Filisur station and went to the viewpoint. From there you can see the Landwasser Viaduct as well as the Schmittentobel Viaduct, which is another arched bridge towards the Chur side, about 35 meters high.
While waiting for the regular passenger trains, I also got to see a 2 wagon freight train passing over the viaduct, hauled by a Ge 6/6 II class locomotive. Then came the Inter Regio service in the uphill direction from Chur to St. Moritz. This was being hauled by a ABe 8/12 class EMU set (also known popularly as ‘Allegra’). After it crossed the service in the opposite direction at Filisur, the downhill train towards Chur made its presence felt as it rumbled across the bridge powered by a Ge 4/4 III class locomotive at the rear end of the train. From the path between the station and the viewpoint, I also saw a Bernina Express train with the panoramic coaches going towards Chur. That was also hauled by a ABe 8/12 class EMU, but from that place I could not see the Landwasser Viaduct. You can only see it crossing the Schmittentobel Viaduct and winding along the side of the mountain towards Chur.
I also wanted to go down into the valley and to another viewpoint on the other side of the mountain to take pictures and videos however I did not have the time to do so. This entire section of the railway line is a Unesco World Heritage railway along with the Bernina section which goes from St. Moritz across the Bernina Pass to the Italian town of Tirano. Breathtakingly Scenic Swiss Railway Journey - Across the Albula Line of the Rhaetian Railway!
Time to enjoy a really beautiful and scenic Swiss railway journey…
The Rhaetian Railway (locally known as the Rhätische Bahn), is a railway line in the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland. It is a meter gauge railway line which has many different sections and branches, and in my recent trip I did journeys across 2 of the main sections. In this video you will see the scenes of the journey on board the Inter Regio train service from the town of Chur to the ski resort of St. Moritz as we pass through the famous Albula section.
The train departs from Chur and it is a short double track section till Reichenau-Tamins, where we halt and wait to cross a Glacier Express train (one of the tourist trains that operate on the railway). We then branch off southwards and separate from the line to Disentis. We soon arrive at Thusis, where we enter the Albula section, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From there we start winding our way slowly up the Albula Valley. We then stop at Tiefencastel and the views just get more spectacular as we ascend. Soon later comes the world famous Landwasser viaduct which is a high stone arch bridge that curves sharply and enters directly into a tunnel built in a cliff face. The next stop is Filisur where you can see us crossing a train in the other direction bound to Chur. Climbing up again we reach Bergun, where there is a railway museum. Between Bergun and the next stop Preda, is a very interesting alignment. The altitude difference is over 400 meters while the distance between the 2 stations is only 5 km as the crow flies. So to maintain the maximum gradient of only 3.5% the track length was stretched to 12 km as it winds its way around U-turns and through 3 spiral loop tunnels in order to gain altitude. While doing this we cross the valley 4 times. You can see the railway line in all directions as we curve and climb. We stop at Preda which is the highest stop on this section and then enter the 6 km long Albula tunnel under the Albula Pass. After the tunnel it is a short downhill run to the town of Samedan where I ended my journey that day. A couple of days later I boarded another train and continued to St. Moritz, which is just a 10 minutes journey with a halt at the village of Celerina on the way.
So sit back, relax and enjoy the beautiful pictures and videos of the stunning Swiss scenery. It was really a lifetime experience and was worth it. A video of another journey on another section of the same railway is also going to be published soon.

Panoramic Train Ride from Switzerland to Italy - Bernina Railway Journey
It is time for a beautiful and scenic train journey across the Swiss Alps. Hop on board the cute little red trains of the Rhatische Bahn (Rhaetian Railway) as we do a trip across the Bernina section of the railway line. The single line metre gauge railway starts from the famous ski resort of St. Moritz in Switzerland at 5900 feet, climbs up and over the Bernina Pass at 7400 feet and then descends all the way to the Italian town of Tirano at 1700 feet. This makes the Bernina Railway an engineering marvel. It is Europe’s highest Alpine railway crossing as well as the highest adhesion railway in Europe. It has inclines of 7% and does not use a cogwheel system to ascend or descend. There are special tourist trains with panoramic coaches (Bernina Express) that run on this route, but my family travelled on the normal regional trains.
We start the journey at St. Moritz station. The train is hauled by two ‘ABe 4/4 III’ railcars in the front. A short ten minutes run past a couple of stations and we arrive at the first stop - Pontresina. After that, the main climb begins. We cross a Bernina Express train at a passing loop and then slowly curve past Morteratsch station, which is the starting point of the walk to the Morteratsch glacier. Many of these stations are classified as ‘Halt on Request’. It means that the train will stop if the driver sees anyone on the platform, or if any of the passengers press the button, indicating that they want to get off. However if no one wants to alight or board, the train will skip the station. You can then see the steep gradients and curves as we wind our way towards the pass, parallel to the road. We halt briefly at a station called Bernina Suot, where the road crosses over to the other side. The next stop is Bernina Diavolezza, from where a cable car goes up to the mountain Diavolezza. We keep climbing higher, and soon there are no more brown patches to be seen, everything is covered in snow. The temperature dips below 5 degrees Celsius and all the windows in the coach are shut, except for the window through which I was taking videos and photos. Soon we reach the top of the Bernina Pass, a station called Ospizio Bernina. We decide to get down and spend some time there. It was freezing cold, but a great feeling to be on the top. After one hour, the next train to Tirano arrives and we get on. This time it is hauled by an ABe 8/12 EMU. We begin the almost continuous and never ending 6000 feet descent to the destination. You can see Lake Bianco on the top of the pass, most of it except for a small section is frozen. As we descend down the other side, it becomes quite foggy. A brief halt at Alp Grum, where a large crowd of tourists gets off our train. The fog just thickens rapidly and I am barely even able to see the front of our train as we curve down the mountain. We stop at Cavaglia for a crossing and then continue descending and losing altitude with the help of numerous U-turns. Finally the fog lifts and the town of Poschiavo can be seen in the distance in the valley. After Poschiavo, there is a short flat section of track. Near Le Prese, the railway line runs like a tram, on the road. We then curve around the banks of Lake Poschiavo, before continuing the descent. We cross another Bernina Express train at Brusio, before going over and under the famous spiral bridge. Then comes the final approach, as we cross the Switzerland - Italy border. As we enter Tirano, the railway line runs on the streets again, so the driver whistles a couple of times. We terminate at Tirano and a wonderful journey comes to an end.
It was really a great feeling to travel on this railway line, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I also travelled on the Albula Section of the Rhaetian Railway, that has a different charm altogether. The Bernina Express is a train connecting Chur in Switzerland to Poschiavo and Tirano in Italy by crossing the Swiss Engadin Alps. For most of its journey, the train also runs along the World Heritage Site known as the Rhaetian Railway in the Albula / Bernina Landscapes.
The trip on the Bernina Express through this World Heritage Site is a four-hour railway journey across 196 bridges, through 55 tunnels and across the Bernina Pass at 2,253 metres above sea.
The Bernina Express uses gradients of 7% to negotiate the difference in height of about 1800 meters from the summit at Ospizio Bernina to Tirano.

The Bernina Express is a train which connects Italy to Switzerland through the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Rhaetian Railway in the Albula / Bernina Landscapes. The train passes by the glaciers offering spectacular and breathtaking mountainous views.
The journey starts in Tirano Italy where the train crosses the main Church square towards the Rhaetian Railway. It passes over the Brusion Circular Viaduct along to Alp Grum, Poschiavo, Bernina Lagalb, Morteratsch, Diavolezza to St Moritz. It also proceeds to Chur and Davos. The total time of the whole journey is 4 hours.

This video shows the train's ride over the Brusio circular viaduct. The world looks different, and indeed takes on some meaning, as the Bernina Express winds up to, or corkscrews down from the heights of the famous circular viaduct of Brusio. The viaduct, which describes a 360-degree curve, artificially allows the railway to perform a brusque change of height in a very short space.
