Rhinegeist Brewery- Co-Founder Bryant Goulding
Co-Founder & President Bob Bonder and Co-Founder & Vice President Bryant Goulding started Rhinegeist Brewing in 2013 with the goal of paying homage to Cincinnati’s rich brewing heritage. Located in the heart of the Over-the-Rhine District in Cincinnati, Rhinegeist’s name translates to “Ghost of the Rhine.”
The brewing facility used by Rhinegeist dates back to 1895 and was once used as a bottling plant for Cincinnati’s largest brewery at the turn of the 19th Century. In 2015, Rhinegeist teamed up with Heidelberg Distributing to bring more of their great tasting beer to the state of Kentucky. In 2016, Rhinegeist and Heidelberg have teamed up again to expand the brewery's footprint in Ohio.

Liquid Gold: More craft beer companies pouring into Cincinnati
CINCINNATI (WKRC) - They're pouring into the Greater Cincinnati area like fine-crafted beer. You might call it liquid gold.
The brewpub industry in Southwest Ohio is overflowing – it has increased eight-fold in the past eight years.
Guys like Dave Emery, who started in his garage, and is opening Big Ash Brewing in Anderson Township in early September, are a part of the movement.
Eight years ago we got 28 guys together, each chipped in 200 bucks and we bought some equipment and some ingredients and we all started brewing together,” says Emery.
Just down the Little Miami River in California, Ohio, you'll find another group of entrepreneurs pouring their hearts into a new brewpub, Dead Low Brewing, scheduled to open in late September.
We really wanted a community destination that could serve a wide variety of people,” says Dead Low Brewing’s Christine Hall.
The Ohio Craft Brewers Association reported in 2018 that craft brewers contributed a $967 million and 8,300 jobs to the Ohio economy. In 2011 there were 45 independent breweries in Ohio, now there are more than 300.
Greater Cincinnati is home to 55 of them.
Nationwide, Food & Wine reported the cities with the greatest thirst for breweries are Portland, Maine with 18 breweries per 50,000 people, Asheville, North Carolina, with 17 per 50,000 and Bend, Oregon with 16.
Cincinnati is 25th, with 6 breweries per 50,000 residents. You might think that those already in business in the area would be upset to see startups flooding the market. But that's not the case. They say the more beer the better.
We keep on the path we're on and hopefully you have people coming from all over the United States to come see this great thing we have going on in Cincinnati, said 50 West Brewing Company’s Bobby Slattery.
Slattery said it's not just about a creative menu and crafting beer, it's about creating a community.
Our bike shop, our running group, our canoeing and kayaking, our volleyball league. We like to come up with as many ways we can bring that community together and at the end of the day we hope you end up with a beer.
Jerry and Karen Weber agree. We caught up with them as they were heading into 50 West for lunch. They say they appreciate the local nature of the restaurant, and of course, the beer.
I love the beers. I love the variety,” says Karen. “And they're fresh,” adds Jerry.
Ohio is the fourth largest independent beer producer in the country, crafting 43 million gallons of beer in 2018, mostly fueled by our three biggest breweries - Samuel Adams, Great Lakes and Rhinegeist.
Does Cincinnati face a brewery bubble?
Two new breweries opened in the past couple weeks and several more are set to open soon. The booming beer scene has some people wondering when the bubble may burst.

Ohio moves up to fourth largest craft beer producer in the United States
CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Ohio's breweries produced almost 1.4 million barrels of beer in 2018. That's up more than 3 percent from 2017.
Ohio is now the fourth largest craft beer producer in the country, behind only Pennsylvania, California and Colorado. It's also closing in fast on having 300 craft breweries, compared to 47 at the beginning of 2012.
Three Ohio companies rank among the top 50 beer makers by volume in the nation: Great Lakes in Cleveland and Samuel Adams and Rhinegeist in Cincinnati.
Alexandria Brewing Company opening April 21, extending Cincinnati's brewing boom south
Cincinnati's craft beer boom has already reached across the Ohio River into all Northern Kentucky's river cities, but the new Alexandria Brewing Company is stretching it further south. After a Kickstarter fundraising campaign in July 2016 and some property setbacks, the brewery has slated its opening day for April 21 with 16 brews on tap at 7926 Alexandria Pike. While serving in the Army, Head Brewer Andy Reynolds was able to “discover” beer while stationed in Germany. It opened his eyes to different styles and tastes.

Cincinnati's newest beer is so strong it's illegal in 15 states
OVER-THE-RHINE, Ohio. (WKRC) - Cincinnati’s newest beer is so strong, it’s illegal in 15 states!
Samuel Adams is brewing up something strong in the Queen City. The blend rings in at 28% ABV. The 2019 version of Utopias is a blend of barrel-aged beers. The Cincinnati brewing location is one of three to age and finish the beer.
“We’re excited to bring something this special to our neighbors and everybody else in the area,” said Samuel Adams Cincinnati Taproom Assistant Manager Jimmy Longbottom.
The releasing of Utopias on tap will celebrate the one-year anniversary of the Cincinnati taproom.
“The neighborhood has been great,” said Longbottom. “A lot of other breweries and businesses have supported us. We’ve made a lot of regulars with neighbors and visitors.”
Mason Cook says he visits the taproom a couple of times a month.
“I call this place the best keep secret in Findlay Market,” said Cook. “Any time you can drink beer that was brewed 20 feet from you, it’s hard to beat.”
In a press release, Samuel Adams Brewing Company explains the aging process of Utopias:
Like its predecessors, 2019 Utopias is a blend of earlier batches of Samuel Adams’ extreme beers, a catalog dating back over 25 years, which have been aging in wooden bourbon casks from Buffalo Trace Distillery. Brewers took portions of this beer and transferred them to Aquavit, Carcavelos and ruby port barrels to impart complex flavors to the beer.
The Utopias beer was first released in 2002. The press release explains the makeup of the 2019 version:
Brewers also experimented with Cognac and Madeira finishing barrels, which enhanced 2019 Utopias with distinct vanilla notes and subtle nutty and elegant dark fruit aromas. As a final step, and to add a slightly tart note, brewers blended a touch of Kosmic Mother Funk, a unique wild ale that is fermented for two years in Hungarian Oak foeders at the Boston Brewery.
On Nov. 15 and now Nov. 16 at the Samuel Adams Cincinnati Taproom, you can taste Utopias during the first-ever tapping.
You can now buy tickets for Saturday, Nov. 16.

Rhinegeist opens facility in Erlanger to distribute in KY
ERLANGER, Ky. (Adam Clements) -- Rhinegeist beer will now be available for purchase in the Blue Grass state.
It says a lot about a business when it has grown faster than expected. What Rhinegeist has done in a year and a half, is what they expected to do in the company's first five years.
Bryant Goulding, VP of Rhinegeist Brewery said, People are looking for fresher, more flavorful beers across the board. We brew hoppy beer. We love hops that are grown in the pacific Northwest with citrus, pine and fruit flavors. I think people here in Cincinnati and now in Kentucky are enjoying those flavors.
Over-the-Rhine has been home to Rhinegeist since it opened. Being a part of the growing neighborhood in Cincinnati is a big reason for it's early success.
I feel like it's the epicenter of modern Cincinnati, Goulding said. It's such a hip neighborhood and we're really excited to be a part of the history in the building, and also the resurgence of life coming back to it.
The new facility in Erlanger is the result of some hurdles the brewery team had to overcome.
At the Rhinegeist Brewery, we self distribute, said Zach Moscow, director of sales. By law, we actually can't distribute across state lines. So, we needed to find a distributor and what we've done is actually created our own. We can apply the things we learned in Ohio as we begin our business down here.
The new Kentucky distribution center is called River Ghost.
It's a totally separate business, said Moscow. I worked for Rhinegeist before, but now I am officially a River Ghost (employee).
They have a 25,000 square-foot brewery and tap room located on Elm Street in Over-the-Rhine that is open seven days a week.
