1930s TOUR OF SHANGHAI & NORTH CHINA RICKSHAWS CHINESE JUNKS GREAT WALL BEIJING 98064
This silent film shows a tour of China and was likely shot in the early 1930s as a promotional film for a tourism company. Some title cards are marked Wonders of the World which might suggest it was also simply a commercial release of a travel record.
Most of what you see in this film no longer exists. At :59 a one wheel taxi -- a wheelbarrow carried by a very strong Chinese man -- is shown. At 1:28 the houses of farmers are seen and at 1:38 a man poses with a child. At 1:47 a street scene in a rural area is shown. At 1:55 men pull rickshaws through the streets of Shanghai and at 2:00 men tow a cart loaded with lumber. At 2:20 metal poles are moved by a gang of men, their hands behind their backs. At 3:10 men tow a roller as a road is constructed. At 3:20 keelboats ply the river loaded with sacks of rice. At 4:00 a Chinese junk is seen on the water.
At 4:20 a trip by rail to North China is shown. At 4:37 the train rides past what appears to be small boats. At 4:45 formal dining aboard the train is shown. At 4:51 the Tientsin East train station is shown. At 5:00 a large pagoda is shown near Tientsin.
At 5:17 a card says The Great Wall of China and the film shows views of tourists being carried on sedan chairs to see the edifice. At 6:59 the tour by train continues to Peiping / Peking / Beijing, where camels are seen in the streets (7:10). At 8:48 children and women with bound feet are shown. At 9:11 the film progresses through the Chien Men Gate into the Tartar City, or inner city of the Beijing wall defenses. At 9:35 the South Gate is shown and glimpses of the Imperial City and Temple of Heaven (10:40) and Altar of Heaven.
At 11:27 a Chinese man is shown eating noodles and at 11:30 a barber is shown working on a man's ponytail. At 12:30 a young child is seen. At 12:40 an elaborate funeral in China is shown. The film ends with more shots from the train including of a pagoda and at 15:40 of sailing vessels moving up a narrow canal or river. At 15:46 a marina of sorts is shown as the film comes to an end.

Rickshaw around Shanghai China
Rickshaw driver tried to mug us in Beijing
Lonely Planet suggested to not take rides on rickshaws, but seeing as it was only one block away according to the map and the price was right, we decided to go against recommendations. Definitely 3 yuan's worth of an experience.
Rickshaw Bicycle Ride in Shanghai
Rickshaw Tour at Back Sea, Beijing
The rickshaws were first introduced and used in Shanghai, China in the late 19th century. Since then, they had become a popular transport means and been widely used in many cities. After the founding of the PRC, the rickshaws were eliminated.
Today, the rickshaws have revived in some tourist attractions, especially in Beijing's old hutongs and courtyards. There are many famous hutongs near the Back Sea. Some well-known buildings like Prince Gong's Mansion, Former Residence of Song Qingling and Former Residence of Guo Moruo keep themselves hidden in the hutongs. Tourists can hire rickshaws to explore these buildings and experience a wonderful hutong tour.

Chinese man pedals rickshaw to Rio in 16-yr trip
(15 Aug 2016) Sixty-year-old Chen Guanming has reached Rio de Janeiro to follow the Olympics in a very authentic way: by pedalling his rickshaw.
The Chinese rickshaw world traveller said on Monday he considers the Olympics a symbol of peace.
His passion for the games started when he got on his rickshaw and left his hometown to volunteer at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
When the games ended, Chen decided to keep on riding to the next one.
Four years later, he was in London, as planned.
The rickshaw rider says the purpose of his travels is to spread the message of peace and friendship of the Games.
The trip from China to Brazil required a flight from London's Heathrow Airport to Canada, followed by the long trip across North America through the US and Mexico and finally to South America for the Rio 2016 games.
Chen is helped along the way by strangers who offer him places to sleep, shower and some food.
The Chinese promised his trip is far from over. He is already planning his next stop: Japan 2020.

Sinorama China tour - day 3 - Hutong rickshaw #1
This was fun. Somehow if we could have had a few more minutes taking photos at the begining. I know I captured as much as I could, but I rushed it and probably was the only one who caught more then one or two friends on the rickshaws. The riders were well prepared to take the photos of the guests and that was much appreciated. Can you imagine a day where all the rickshaws are in service and the streets are one full flowing motion of nothing but tourists on them. There are lots of these guys waiting for you to travel in style. A definite must do in Beijing, there's even a nice little market in the middle, let me know if you stopped there, we were too rushed to drop by there. Don't forget this is still our first day of touring Beijing - man it was a busy day. Sinorama 21 day tour of China
