SPAIN - La Rioja Wine & Pintxos - Day 8
Day 8 of 42 in Europe... you can't beat a full day of being wined and dined at 3 top wineries in the famed La Rioja region of Spain. We visited Ontanon, Bai Gorri, and Marques de Riscal. All were very well done tours, with generous tastings, as you’ll see in the video.
From an architecture standpoint, I highly recommend visiting Bai Gorri with their very impressive glass and metal modern structure atop a multi-level underground production facility. And, of course, famed architect Frank Gehry designed the Marqués de Riscal building and it is a must-see. We will visit his Guggenheim Museum building in Bilbao in an upcoming video.
Pro tip: unlike Napa and Sonoma where stopping in unannounced for a tasting is the norm, most wineries here require reservations. We arranged all through our hotel Finca de los Arandinos ( They are a boutique hotel and winery that we will tour in tomorrow’s video.
We ended the day spending some time in the town of Logroño… my first taste of pinchos (in Basque: pintxo). I might be a little pintxo crazy! Learn more:

Rioja Wine Tour - Travel vlog
The best way to taste Spanish wine is to travel there and to experience it first hand! in this travel vlog I take you with me to La Rioja and Bodegas Ramon Bilbao who was cool enough to sponsor this video.
When I traveled I stayed in Logroño for the most part. But Haro could also be a great option if you want to go!
I had a blast, tasting all kinds of wines. Red, white and sparkling! But the king of Rioja will always be Tempranillo. I also got to know more about the local grape varietals that are some times blended with it (Garnacha, Greciano, Manzuelo and the green grape Viura).
A big thanks to Ana Frias Lara for being our tour guide and taking care of us during the stay. If you want to see a video where I interviewed her about Crianza and Gran Reserva wines, click here:
If you are new to Spanish wines in general and want to start somewhere, click here:
And finally, if you want to join me into the vineyard and talk about Old Vines in Rioja, click this video:

ITINERARY
Day 1 – Haro. After checking in at the hotel that we have specially selected for this getaway, a former convent converted into a luxury hotel located in the center of town, you will have time to enjoy Haro, explore the old town, the Plaza de la Paz, its palatial houses, the church of Santo Tomás, the Plaza de la Cruz, the area of La Herradura and take a walk through the Gardens of La Vega and visit its church.
At night, you will enjoy a quality dinner at a restaurant in the historic center of Haro. 3-course menu, with different options to choose from. Rioja wine
Day 2 – Haro – ElCiego – Laguardia. Today, you can go by car or walk through the alleys of Haro until you reach the famous Barrio de la Estación where you will visit the prestigious Muga winery and taste its wines, a winery that takes great care of the quality of its wines and maintains traditional methods of elaboration. You will learn about the interesting history of Rioja wine and you will be able to see one of the few cooperages that remain in operation in a winery.
For breakfast in Haro, we recommend going to Plaza de la Paz, just 5 minutes walk from your hotel, where you will find a wide variety of cafes for a good breakfast to start the day.
After your visit in Haro, it´s time to head to the locality of Elciego. On the way to Elciego, you will enjoy Riojan gastronomy and the experience of eating at a winery. 3-course menú and Rioja wine.
Continuing on your journey discovering Rioja, you will arrive at Elciego where you will visit the emblematic winery of Marqués de Riscal and taste its wines. Marqués de Riscal is an icon in Rioja wines because of its reputation and its role in the transformation of Rioja into what it is today.
Elciego is a small Riojan town located in Rioja Alavesa. Among its historic sites are the Church of San Andrés and the beautiful Plaza Mayor where the main events of the town are celebrated. Also of historical importance are some palaces like that of Ramírez de la Piscino of the Casa de los Hierros.
After visiting Marqués de Riscal and exploring the cobbled streets of Elciego, you will continue your road trip to the village of LaGuardia, considered one of the most beautiful medieval villages in Spain. You will stay in a fabulous hotel located just 5 minutes from the center of Laguardia.
Dinner is not included today. In Laguardia, you will find a good number of restaurants and pintxos taverns where you can taste top quality products and great wine, of course. If you prefer, we can add a dinner at your hotel or at one of the best restaurants in Laguardia located in a castle. Just let us know that you would like this included before booking.
Day 3 – Logroño. After breakfast at your hotel in Laguardia and before arriving in Logroño, you will enjoy one of the most original oenological experiences included in this trip. In a privileged natural environment, you will visit a family winery that conserves its fascinating caves and ample centenary underground cellars where they age their wines. Similar to the French chateu style, the winery is surrounded by 60 hecates of vineyards where you will enjoy a traditional snack next to vineyards served in the true country style with wicker basket, plaid tablecloth and wineskin. The picnic basket contains: Spanish omelette, chorizo, cheese, bread and fruit. All of this paired with Crianza wine of the winery.
(If the picnic cannot be enjoyed in the vineyard due to inclement weather, it will be enjoyed indoors in a private dining room).
After this experience, you will make your way to the capital of La Rioja, Logroño. For your stay in Logroño, we have selected a hotel with a perfect location, situated on the main street of Logroño and just a 5 minute walk from the old town and the famous Calle Laurel.
There are many things to do in Logroño like visiting the old town, the Plaza del Mercado where you will find the Concatedral de la Redonda with its Torres Gemelas (twin towers), the Plaza de Abastos where you can find quality local products, the Museum of Rioja located inside Palacio de Espartero…and other buildings of the city such as the town hall, the Tabacalera, the Palacio del Marqués de Legarda, the Palacio de los Chapiteles, the Riojaforum (Palacio de Congresos y Exposiciones), etc.
Dinner is not included today. Logroño has countless places where you can enjoy tapas and wine. If you prefer, we can include a dinner at one of the best taverns of the popular Calle Laurel. Just let us know if you would like this added to your itinerary before booking.

Bodegas Nestares Eguizabal
Galilea, Rioja Baja
.
This family #winery transitioned from grape growing into #winemaking in 1998.
.
Their 25ha vineyards are at 520-650m altitude, producing 80T of grapes per year, with traditional #grape varieties such as Tempranillo and #Garnacha (aka Grenache) as well as #Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
.
Minimal intervention is the focus here with Alberto Pedrajo responsible for the #winemaking. Alberto would have to be one of the most passionate #Winemakers we have met in a long time. His love for his country and for wine are unparalleled. We could have listened to him for hours.
.
The standout wine for us was the 2011 Segares #Crianza. This was made from 100% #Tempranillo, using minimal intervention in the winery and matutred in a mixture of American and French oak. This wine is in a sweet spot right now with it's raspberry and blackcurrant aromas, savoury medium bodied palate with matured, rounded tannins.
.
We had an incredible time with these guys. The Spanish hospitality is amazing!

Spain wine tasting trip, Summer 2019 - JamesSuckling.com
This summer James, his wife Marie, his son Jack and Senior Editor Nick Stock spent 10 days in Rioja, Spain, tasting more than 2,100 wines at the Hotel Viura. They discovered a new classicism on the rise, with modern, transparent winemaking to the fore. There are still a lot of jammy wines being produced, but that didn’t detract from the excellence that’s on offer in the country these days, and it’s improving with each year of new releases; wines of outstanding quality from key regions as well as lesser-known ones.
