Grandfather Mountain Profile Trail | Boone Hiking Adventures
The Grandaddy of all High Country hikes is this 7-mile round-trip trek to Calloway Peak, 5,646 ft. The views from the summit or nearby Watauga View are astounding and reach from the mountains to the Piedmont. Campsites are available for backpackers. The first mile is easy along the Watauga River, then you’ll climb steeply at times to views of Grandfather’s profile “face” and on to the evergreen-clad peak. Hikers must register at the trailhead.
Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina near the town of Boone, Grandfather Mountain is one of the most rugged, yet beautiful mountains in the eastern United States.
At 5,946 feet in elevation, it is the highest peak on the eastern escarpment of the Blue Ridge Mountains and was once believed to be among the tallest mountains on earth by its earliest explorers.
French botanist Andre Michaux climbed Grandfather in August of 1794. He wrote in his journal: “Reached the summit of the highest mountain in all of North America, and with my companion and guide and shouted ‘Long live America and the Republic of France, long live liberty!’”
The original Cherokee name for the mountain was “Tanawha,” meaning “a fabulous hawk or eagle.” Early pioneers named the mountain “Grandfather” due in large part to the multiple vantage points that reveal different “profiles” in the craggy rocks and knobs along the western slopes.
Along with Michaux, Daniel Boone was also one of the early explorers of the mountain and was known to hunt in the area as early as the 1760′s.
Although Grandfather’s Calloway Peak does tower 5,946 feet above sea level, Michaux was mistaken when he thought he had reached the highest point on the continent, or even in the Carolinas. Grandfather appears taller than its neighbors because of the abrupt way the mountain rises above its surroundings, which makes for incredible vistas and a hiking experience like none other in North Carolina.
While thousands have tread the rocky path to the top of the mountain via one of several trails in the last century, one of the most notable of all was John Muir, founder of the Sierra Club, who visited Grandfather in September 1898. Muir had been ill with a bronchial cough for many months, but after climbing Grandfather he wrote to his wife, “the air has healed me. I think I could walk ten miles and not be tired.” According to an article in American Museum Journal, he fell into poetic raptures over the view from the top, saying, “I couldn’t hold in, and began to jump about and sing and glory in it all.”
In 1952, Hugh MacRae Morton purchased Grandfather Mountain and made improvements to the roads and trails that led to what is now the visitor center and one of the park’s most famous attractions, the Mile High Swinging Bridge.
In 1989, Grandfather Mountain began working with the North Carolina chapter of The Nature Conservancy to preserve 1,460 acres of the mountain’s wilderness backcountry. In 1992, Grandfather was selected by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization for recognition as a member of the international network of Biosphere Reserves.
When Hugh Morton died in June 2006, his heirs vowed to continue his mission to preserve and protect Grandfather Mountain in its natural state. In September 2008 they announced a plan to sell the undeveloped “backcountry” of Grandfather to the state of North Carolina for a state park. In the summer of 2009, the Morton family began the process of transferring the operations of the travel attraction to the Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation. The new non-profit organization continues to make the property accessible to the public and will devote all resources to preservation, conservation, education and recreation.

Sasquatch In The Wayne National Forest: Finding Bigfoot
The Sasquatch, being a migratory individual, are seldom found in one location as some might wish to claim. Recently I was engaged in a discussion with the man in charge of the Ohio Bigfoot Conference here in Ohio. He claims that the Sasquatch are found mostly in places like 1) West Branch State Park and 2) Salt Fork State Park...Too many people who say they research the Sasquatch claim that they are seeing them in the same locations time after time, some claim there are several of the Sasquatch living in family groups in the same locations for several years. I even had one man say to me once that the Ohio Bigfoot was exclusive to Salt Fork State Park and was found no where else. Needless to say,Salt Fork was the only place he went and add in the fact he has never seen one proves he doesn't know of what he speaks.
The Sasquatch is The most elusive unknown individual on Earth and the reason is that they are migratory and never stay in one place for very long. Several years ago when I first started in this I figured this out,yet no one else seems to comprehend this. I also figured out by looking at alleged sighting reports that most were near the Buckeye Trail, which circles the entire state through forested land. This trail does pass through such places as West Branch & Salt Fork State Parks.
So in order to track and find the Sasquatch in Ohio, I've been watching the Buckeye Trail closely...that is why the Wayne National Forest is high on my list of search areas.

My Blowing Rock and Mystery Hill NC Adventure! Part 1
Blowing Rock and Mystery Hill!
North Carolina's Natural Gravitational Anomaly and so much more. Amazing visitors for over 70 years in Blowing Rock, NC. Fun and educational for all ages. Starting at $20
The town of Blowing Rock takes its name from an unusual rock formation which juts over 1,500 feet (460 m) above the Johns River gorge. Due to the rock's shape and size, wind currents from the gorge often blow vertically, causing light objects to float upwards into the sky.
Blowing Rock is the site of Glen Burney Falls and Glen Marie Falls.
The Blowing Rock area was once fought over by the Cherokee and Catawba Native American tribes. According to legend, two lovers - one from each tribe - were walking near the rocks when the man received a notice to report to his village and go into battle. When his lover urged him to stay with her, he became so distraught that he threw himself off the blowing rock into the gorge. The woman prayed to the Great Spirit to return her lover, and the Spirit complied by sending a gust of wind which blew the man back up the cliff and landed him safely on the blowing rock itself. This story of course is fictional but it was used as a draw for the attraction. In the 1980s, a billboard in Wilkesboro for Blowing Rock showed two Indians holding hands, one standing on the rock and one floating. Today The Blowing Rock is a tourist attraction and is known for its superb views of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains.

The Watauga River runs through North Carolina and Tennessee and is an amazing river, allowing kayakers from Boone and the High Country to get their paddling fix when the water is up. This beautiful gorge is an amazing resource and the proximity to the town of Boone is conducive to laps both before and after work. The river level in this video is between 300 and 400 cfs.

Van Camping Adventure ~ South Mountains State Park NC
We had an awesome overnight van camping adventure at South Mountains State Park. We had all been itching to get out and go camping and get back into the woods. South Mountains is a great State Park for camping, trout fishing & hiking. You can find many waterfalls along the trails. We had a good hike on the Shinny Creek Loop Trail. Myself & Caleb slept in our van campers. Bobby slept in his DIY Rooftop Tent & Shane slept in a Dutchware Chameleon Hammock. This was a manly adventure in the NC Mountains. This was a camping adventure we will not soon forget.
Please visit Caleb's channel and watch his version of our trip. Especially the part where he loses his drone in a tree and the dramatic rescue. Give him a sub.
