LOCATED IN THE HEART OF HISTORIC UPTOWN COLUMBUS, RIVERCENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS IS THE CENTERPIECE OF THE CITY’S NEW ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT DISTRICT.
Conceived as a vital cultural hub, the center was designed by the multi-national architectural firm Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer and Associates to artistically enrich the Chattahoochee Valley region. Its construction was funded in part by $86 million of the over $100 million that was raised by the Columbus Challenge, an unprecedented public-private fundraising effort that also revitalized key local cultural venues. The remainder of funding came from a $17-million state appropriation and a $25-million matching pledge from the Bradley-Turner Foundation.
A property of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the 245,000-square-foot RiverCenter is a visually stunning blend of the past and the present, mixing the brick and ironwork of the area’s historic buildings with a modern multi-level glass and steel façade. Its spacious entrance is graced by a tall glass “curtain” wall and a soaring staircase. A sense of the building’s magnitude may be gained from contemplating some statistics: a height of 120 feet (five stories), 200 miles of wiring, 150,000 feet of conduit, six million pounds of structural steel, one million masonry blocks, 300,000 bricks, and 50 million pounds of concrete.
RiverCenter’s state-of-the-art facilities include the 2,000-seat Bill Heard Theatre, the center’s main venue and home to the Columbus Symphony Orchestra. Featuring orchestra, mezzanine and balcony seating, the hall is designed to meet the complex technical needs of attractions such as Broadway shows, symphonic concerts, dance performances, pop concerts, lectures and conferences. From the ceiling large interwoven ribbons of steel mesh contribute a sense of intimacy, while shaped balcony fascias and custom light fixtures provide color, texture and warmth.

Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts | New York City, USA
A consortium of civic leaders and others led by, and under the initiative of, John D. Rockefeller III built Lincoln Center as part of the Lincoln Square Renewal Project during Robert Moses's program of urban renewal in the 1950s and 1960s. Respected architects were contracted to design the major buildings on the site, and over the next thirty years the previously blighted area around Lincoln Center became a new cultural hub.
The Columbus Museum - Columbus, Georgia - Aerial View
This video was filmed with a DJI Phantom 2 Vision+ quadcopter on May 24, 2015.
Founded in 1953, the Columbus Museum is one of the largest museums in the Southeast and is unique for its dual concentration on American art and regional history, displayed in its permanent collection, temporary exhibitions, and educational programs.
When noted Columbus industrialist W.C. Bradley died in 1947, his family donated his 13-acre estate to the city of Columbus to be used as a center of culture and education. Located in the heart of the Wynnton neighborhood in a 1912 Mediterranean Revival house, the Columbus Museum of Arts and Crafts opened its doors to the public on March 29, 1953. Director Edward Swift Shorter quickly launched an ambitious schedule, including lectures and classes related to the Museum’s exhibitions of fine art and American Indian archaeological artifacts. As the institution grew, its name became shorter (now just the Columbus Museum), and its collecting focus changed to include American art in all mediums and artifacts that tell the story of human habitation in the Lower Chattahoochee River Valley.
In April 1989, a major expansion of the Museum resulted in the creation of an architecturally stunning, world-class facility. Still incorporating the original Bradley home, the Museum is now 89,000 square feet, including an interactive children’s gallery, a 300-seat auditorium, and a large atrium for special events. Galleries showcase both permanent and temporary exhibitions on regional history and American art, while a multimedia theater offers a film exploring the history and culture of the Chattahoochee Valley. Visitors can also enjoy the Bradley Olmsted Garden, designed in the 1920s by the Olmsted Brothers firm, founded by famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted.
Today, the Columbus Museum’s dedicated board and staff continue its legacy as a cultural center. In partnership with the Muscogee County School District, the Museum seeks to educate and inspire with a variety of exhibitions and programs, matching its slogan: “Always changing, always free.”

Columbus, GA Georgia | Convention & Visitors Bureau | The Springer Opera House
This spectacular, red plush-and-gilt theatre was built by Francis Joseph Springer, an immigrant from Alsace who moved to Columbus before the War Between the States. It opened February 21, 1871, and soon became known as the finest theatre house between Washington and New Orleans. As you look around the main hall with its curving double balconies, delicate tulip lights and high proscenium arch, imagine sitting beneath the glow of limelight watching Ma Rainey, Ruth Gordon, Agnes DeMille, Lillie Langtry, James O'Neill, or the legendary Shakespearean Edwin Booth perform on the deep Springer Stage. Or perhaps you've come to hear a lecture by William Jennings Bryan, Will Rogers, or Franklin D. Roosevelt. No matteamr. Like so many before you have found, a visit to the Springer Opera House is a very special experience. The Springer continued as a major regional theatre center until the Great Depression ended the vast network American Theatre of road companies which provided the lifeblood of American Theatre. When the touring circuits collapsed, the Springer became a movie house and began a steady decline into near-oblivion.
The Springer Opera House was rated the number one Major Theatre in the State of Georgia for 1994 and 2004 by the Georgia Council for the Arts. It was designated as the official State Theatre of Georgia in 1971 by then Governor Jimmy Carter. A National Historic Landmark since 1975, the Springer Opera House operates today as a working theatre, presenting year-round entertainment on two stages, as well as offering formal theatre training and educational programming. In addition, The Springer produces Springer Theatre on Tour, one of the fastest growing regional touring companies in the Southeast. With a full Main Stage Season of popular plays, a colorful Children's Series and a spicy schedule in the alternative Studio II Series, the Springer is once again a major voice for the performing arts in the Southeast.
