Saigon City Tour (Part 1: Guided Tour) | Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam | We.Are.Wanderful
On October 24 to 27, 2015 our family went to Ho Chi Minh City for our first Vietnam tour.
The bulk of our trip (2.5 days) was spent touring Ho Chi Minh City, which also still goes by its old name, Saigon.
On our very first day in Saigon we arranged for a guided city tour. I booked us online via opting for the PRT Lotus – Ho Chi Minh City Full Day on the website.
At 8:00am sharp our Roadstour-assigned guide, Lucy, was waiting for us at the lobby of our hotel.
For the morning part of our tour she brought us to some of the most historically relevant landmarks and tourist destinations in Saigon, including the Reunification Palace, the War Remnants Museum, Notre Dame Cathedral Saigon, Saigon Post Office, and the Saigon Opera House.
Our city tour included lunch and Lucy made us choose between a Chinese-style all-you-can-eat restaurant and an authentic Vietnamese noodle house. Of course we wanted to try authentic Vietnamese food so we opt for the latter. She brought us then to Pho 24 in downtown Saigon. We are of course familiar with Pho 24 as it has outlets in Metro Manila. We've always enjoyed the food in Pho 24 in M. Manila but we've enjoyed it much much more in Saigon.
In the afternoon Lucy accompanied us to visit a couple of temples and then we proceeded to the Saigon Chinese Market.
We ended our guided city tour at another popular market in Saigon—the Ben Thanh Market, where we had the opportunity to do some shopping, Divisoria-style.
All in all it was a tiring but satisfying tour of Saigon and we retired to our hotel for our first full night in Vietnam happy and looking forward for more tours in the next 3 days.
This is a short slideshow of our guided city tour in Saigon.

I'm a South African vlogger currently living in Wild Wild Somerset West, but I've kinda stayed all over the place - from Cape Town, Betty's Bay, Villiersdorp and even ... ehem...Kuilsriver. i'm not sure what the end game will be from this vlog. Right now I'm really just having fun recording and capturing parts of my day to day life. I find the editing process fun, challenging and massively rewarding.

Cambodian genocide by Pol Pot Regime
The Cambodian genocide (Khmer: របបប្រល័យពូជសាសន៍) was carried out by the regime of the Khmer Rouge (KR) on any individual that was perceived to be in opposition. The regime was led by Pol Pot, who controlled the government from 1975 to 1979, killing approximately 1.5 to 3 million Cambodians. The regime wanted to start a new republic and turn the country into a socialist agrarian republic, founded on the policies of Marxism-Lenism and Maoism. During his second year of rule in 1976, the Khmer Rouge changed the name of the country and established Democratic Kampuchea, symbolizing the start of a new republic. In order to fulfill the regime's goals, they emptied the cities and forced Cambodians to be relocated into labour camps in the countryside, where they were tortured and where mass executions, use of forced labour, physical abuse, malnutrition and disease were prevalent. This led to the death of approximately 25 percent of Cambodia's total population. Approximately 17,000 people passed through the Tuol Sleng Centre (also known as Security Prison S-21), one of the 196 prisons operated by the Khmer Rouge, and only 7 people survived. Anyone perceived as the opposition was taken to the Killing Fields, located outside the capital city Phnom Penh such as Choeung Ek where they were executed (mainly by pickaxes to save bullets) and buried in mass graves. The Vietnamese invasion of Cambodia ended the genocide and the Khmer Rouge regime in 1979. As of 2009, 23,745 mass graves had been discovered.
On 2 January 2001 the Cambodian government established the Khmer Rouge Tribunal, to try the members of the Khmer Rouge leadership responsible for the Cambodian genocide. Trials began on 17 February 2009. On 7 August 2014, Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan were convicted and received life sentences for crimes against humanity during the genocide.
