Roanoke Canal Trail, Roanoke Rapids to Weldon, North Carolina
I've been visiting the Roanoke Rapids area off and on for years, and every time I am out there I always enjoy spending free time on the Roanoke Canal Trail, but I've never shot any video there for my channel. After my recent Hiker Tag video, there was some interest generated among my viewers, so I decided to shoot a full documentary of the trail. The area offers plenty of great natural resources and also tells the story of river transportation in early American history. The area was also important during the Civil War. I hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching!
The Roanoke Canal Trail runs along the south banks of the Roanoke River, from the town of Roanoke Rapids to the town of Weldon, in Halifax County, North Carolina. It's a roughly 8 mile linear trail. The western trailhead is the Roanoke Rapids Lake Day Use Area, and the eastern trailhead is located at River Falls Park in Weldon. There are multiple parking areas and access point along the length of the trail as well. I compiled this video by accessing the trail at different locations over several different days. The video showcases some of the main historical and natural highlights of the trail.
Much of the trail follows along the towpath of the early 1800s navigation canal that was constructed so that small boats could navigate around the rapids found here along the fall zone of the eastern rim of the Piedmont. River navigation was essential to the development of the interior of early America. Parts of the trail also lie along an old railroad grade that was of vital importance to the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. A Confederate cemetery as well as earthen fortifications can be seen along the trail.

WalkingtheRoanokeCanalTrail.mov
The Roanoke Canal Trail is a beautiful nature and history trail that follows the bed and towpath of the former Roanoke Navigation Canal. At certain points at the head of the trail at Roanoke Rapids Lake Park, you are walking between two canals, the Navigation Canal that was later converted to power and the Roanoke Power Canal that was a much shorter, much wider canal, created solely to generate electricity. The Power Canal powered our area until the Roanoke Rapids Lake Dam was constructed in 1955. The trail offers amazing historic structures like the Power Canal bulkhead, stone culverts, the Navigation Canal locks, the first power station built beside the locks (now the Roanoke Canal Museum), a stone aqueduct that carried the canal over Chockoyotte Creek and spanned 35 feet in a single arch, a spur trail leading to a mass Confederate cemetery, a canal-powered cotton mill (now Riverside Mill art, antique and outlet mall) and ultimately leading to the Roanoke River where a canal-powered grist mill still stands (now a venue for events). The Roanoke Canal Trail is great for hiking, biking, running and walking any time of year. It is open sunrise to sunset seven days a week. The trail is also a site on the North Carolina Birding Trail.
Weldon Aqueduct on Roanoke Canal Trail
Exploring the historic Aquaduct in Weldon on the Canal Trail from Roanoke Rapids to Weldon.
The Roanoke Canal is nearly 200 years old. After the American War of Independence, the young nations founding fathers sought to open trade and transportation into their western frontier. In North Carolina and Virginia, that meant developing the Roanoke River into a water highway. By 1815, an agreement between the two states established the Roanoke River Navigation Company and charged it with clearing the river and building a canal around the great falls near present-day Roanoke Rapids. In 1823, the canals channel, locks, culverts, and aqueduct were complete and for the first time boats known by their French name bateau or batteau could pass the Piedmonts fall line and travel westward into the interior. This created a new destination for trade and commerce at present-day Weldon where ships coming from the Albemarle met with the batteau coming downstream. Soon afterward, the Wharfs at Weldon became the destination for railroads like the Weldon and Wilmington Railroad and created an even larger center for trade. The railroads, however, eventually outpaced the canal and caused it to close as a transportation resource in 1880.
In 1882, new investors purchased the canal and developed it into a source of water power to generate electricity. By 1900, two powerhouses were in full operation but they were not destined to last long. Competition with a newer adjoining power canal, high maintenance costs, and the need for larger hydroelectric facilities put the navigation canal out of business for a second time in 1912.
The property was again sold, this time to the predecessors of Dominion Power Company, and facilities like the powerhouses served as maintenance and civic service buildings for several decades. In an effort to save the remains of the original navigation canal and its associated architectural features, the Roanoke Canal Commission was established to acquired the property or right of way and begin preservation and restoration efforts. In 1976, the remnants of the canal were placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, the trail follows the canals original tow path for 7.2 miles between Roanoke Lake and Weldon.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

Richmond () is the capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia in the United States. It is the center of the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) and the Greater Richmond Region. Richmond was incorporated in 1742 and has been an independent city since 1871.
As of the 2010 census, the city's population was 204,214; in 2016, the population was estimated to be 223,170, making Richmond the fourth-most populous city in Virginia. The Richmond Metropolitan Area has a population of 1,260,029, the third-most populous metro in the state.
Richmond is located at the fall line of the James River, 44 miles (71 km) west of Williamsburg, 66 miles (106 km) east of Charlottesville, 100 miles (160 km) east of Lynchburg and 98 miles (158 km) south of Washington, D.C. Surrounded by Henrico and Chesterfield counties, the city is located at the intersections of Interstate 95 and Interstate 64, and encircled by Interstate 295 and Virginia State Route 288. Major suburbs include Midlothian to the southwest, Chesterfield to the south, Varina to the southeast, Sandston to the east, Glen Allen to the north and west, Short Pump to the west and Mechanicsville to the northeast.
The site of Richmond had been an important village of the Powhatan Confederacy, and was briefly settled by English colonists from Jamestown in 1609, and in 1610–1611. The present city of Richmond was founded in 1737. It became the capital of the Colony and Dominion of Virginia in 1780, replacing Williamsburg. During the Revolutionary War period, several notable events occurred in the city, including Patrick Henry's Give me liberty or give me death speech in 1775 at St. John's Church, and the passage of the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom written by Thomas Jefferson. During the American Civil War, Richmond served as the second and permanent capital of the Confederate States of America. The city entered the 20th century with one of the world's first successful electric streetcar systems. The Jackson Ward neighborhood is a national hub of African-American commerce and culture.
Richmond's economy is primarily driven by law, finance, and government, with federal, state, and local governmental agencies, as well as notable legal and banking firms, located in the downtown area. The city is home to both the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, one of 13 United States courts of appeals, and the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, one of 12 Federal Reserve Banks. Dominion Energy and WestRock, Fortune 500 companies, are headquartered in the city, with others in the metropolitan area.
