Driving Through Lee Highway (Rt 29) - Arlington, Virginia , USA | Residential Areas
Lee Highway (also known as Rt. 29) is one of several main thoroughfares through Arlington.
_____________________________________________________
The Lee Highway was a national auto trail in the United States, connecting New York City and San Francisco, California, via the South and Southwest. After receiving a letter on January 15, 1919, from Dr. Samuel Myrtle Johnson of Roswell, New Mexico, David Carlisle Humphreys of Lexington, Virginia, put out a call for a meeting in Roanoke, Virginia, to form a new national highway association. On December 3, 1919, five hundred men from five states met in Roanoke to officially form the Lee Highway Association. The auto trail was named after Robert E. Lee

Introduction to Arlington, Virginia.
Arlington is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia, on the west bank of the Potomac River directly across from Washington, D.C. Although sometimes referred to as a city, Arlington is actually a county which contains no incorporated towns or cities within its boundaries. Originally part of the 10-mile square area set aside in 1791 for the nation’s capital, the land now comprising Arlington County was returned to the Commonwealth of Virginia by the U.S. Congress in 1846 and was known at the time as Alexandria County. In 1852, the independent City of Alexandria was incorporated from a portion of the County, leading to confusion, as two adjacent municipal entities continued to share the same name (Alexandria). The confusion was resolved in 1920, when Alexandria County renamed itself Arlington County, borrowing its name from the Arlington National Cemetery, which had been established during the Civil War on the grounds of Confederate General Robert E. Lee's former home, Arlington House.
Although best known generally as the home of the Pentagon, The Iwo Jima War Memorial, and Arlington National Cemetery, the County is also an important employment center. The Federal Government accounts for the lion's share of the roughly 200,000 jobs in Arlington, but high-tech companies have become increasingly prominent, as have several major associations, Fortune 500 companies, and other nationally known employers. The County’s residential population is among the most highly educated in the nation and is increasingly diverse. Arlington is the home of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and is serviced by the Orange, Blue and Yellow lines of the Washington Metro. The County is traversed by two Interstate highways, I-66 and I-395; as well as by the George Washington Memorial Parkway.
Arlington Area Attractions
The name Arlington is synonymous in many people's minds with Arlington National Cemetery, the most famous national cemetery in the United States. Veterans from all the nation's wars are buried in the cemetery, as are two former Presidents (John F. Kennedy and William Howard Taft). Also located in Arlington are the Pentagon, headquarters of the United States Department of Defense, and several notable memorials, including the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial (also known as the Iwo Jima Memorial), the U.S. Air Force Memorial, and the Women in Military Service for America Memorial.
Other attractions in Arlington include the Arlington Arts Center, founded in 1976 and housed in the historic Maury School; the Arlington Historical Museum, housed in a two-story brick structure built in 1891 and currently standing as the oldest school building in Arlington County. The Ball-Sellers house, a one-room log cabin with a loft built by a farmer named John Ball in 1742, is a rare example of an ordinary person's dwelling of the 1700s. The Ellipse Arts Center is a 3,000 square foot visual arts facility which opened in 1990, and presents a diverse schedule of high quality programs in the visual arts. A wealth of other attractions abound in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, including the following:
The National Mall
Ford's Theatre
The National Archives
National Air and Space Museum
International Spy Museum
Lincoln Theatre
John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts
Chinatown
African American Civil War Memorial
Blair House
Folger Shakespeare Library
National Geographic Society
Frederick Douglass National Historic Site
National Building Museum
Visitors to Arlington can take the very short trip to the other side of the Potomac, where the city of Washington hosts several major league professional sports franchises. These include football's Redskins (NFL), baseball's Nationals (MLB), basketball's Wizards (NBA) and Mystics (WNBA), hockey's Capitals (NHL), soccer's DC United (MLS), and lacrosse's Bayhawks (MLL).

The Blue Ride Parkway
The Blue Ridge Parkway, Americas Favorite Drive, will be celebrating its 75th Birthday in 2010. Started in the 1930s as a Depression-era public works project, it took over fifty years to complete. This highway, noted for its beautiful scenic views, meanders through the Blue Ridge Mountains for 469.1 miles from Shenandoah National Park in Virginia to U.S. 441 at Oconaluftee in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park near Cherokee, North Carolina. For seventeen miles it winds its way through Floyd County, one of the most beautiful and photographed areas of the parkway.
There is no fee for using the parkway and it is a favorite destination for many travelers for many reasons. Along the parkway can be found plenty of opportunities to stop, eat, stretch, visit restrooms and exhibits, hike, fish or view wildlife. Historic sites and buildings, each with its own unique history, are found all along the parkway giving the traveler opportunities to be transported back in time as they explore the cultural heritage of the area while enjoying the spectacular natural views.
The parkway is an excellent destination for birdwatchers. The Appalachian Mountains are along the flyway for most eastern migratory birds. Photographers also will find an abundance of unique photographic opportunities. Hikers and horseback riders, as well as wildflower and history enthusiast will find what they are looking for along Americas Favorite Drive.
Some points of interest in Floyd County include:
Milepost 120.4 - Enjoy a 3.7-mile side trip to Roanoke Mountain. Roanoke is where the Great Wagon Road branched south into North Carolina and west into Kentucky, the route of many an Appalachian settler.
Milepost 154 - The Trail Cabin, circa 19th-century, represents the isolation of mountain residents. The location has been described as spectacular!
Milepost 176.2 - Mabry Mill is not to be missed. Explore the mill, a blacksmith shop, wheelwright's and a whiskey still. Demonstrations take place spring through fall.
Milepost 189 - The Puckett Cabin, also 19th-century, was the home of Mrs. Orleana Hawks Puckett, a mid-wife.

Be Prepared for your Parkway Tour
It is a good idea to always travel with emergency supplies, especially when traveling the parkway. Weather conditions in the mountains can contrast greatly from the surrounding valleys or the piedmont region. Be sure to monitor the local forecasts and be prepared for situations that can arise from vehicle trouble to sever weather conditions.

FWD brand Antique Truck made in 1961 Clintonville WI a Rare Find.wmv
& 1-540-808-2880 - floydlcfgroup@gmail - PO box 179 Floyd,Virginia 24091------This FWD manufactured truck was built in 1961 in Clintonville Wisconsin. The present owner located it on a dairy farm parked at the edge of hay field. It had been there for a very long time and owner was happy to see it leave his farm. The new owner was able to make run and has fixed it up real nice and used it last winter to help plow snow from the state roads. It is really a massive truck when viewed up close with a very big 6 cylinder gas engine. Some folks have the luck and just in the right place at the right time.---------This video was produced by the LCF Group, ( We are on The Crooked Road Heritage Music Trail and the Round The Mountain Artisan and Craftsman Venue as a great place to visit ) Floyd Professional Center, Village Green, Floyd Virginia. Dover Traction Elevators at the Texas State Capitol with DieselDucy.
Riding the exquisitely beautiful elevators at the historic Texas State Capitol with DieselDucy in Austin, Texas, and even though these were modernized, these are definitely some of the nicest elevators in Austin, since the Texas State Capitol is a historic, public, high rise building. But still, even if the elevator is very nice and runs great, I still think CJ Anderson fixtures would have been a lot nicer.

AWESOME MOTOR! Vintage OTIS Traction Elevator-Leifson Physics Building-UNR-Reno, NV
Although modernized, this elevator still has a lot of character. It's still running on its original motor as you can tell. I LOVE the blue cab and the tray lighting. This was an OTIS Lexan but it got an Innovation slap on. The door is extra huge. The door operator seems like it's not strong enough.

Silver State Hydraulic Elevator-The Arriaga Time Zone Motel-Reno, NV
I like the unique name of this motel. This is another run down motel in Reno. Surprisingly, the elevator wasn't as bad as the property itself. This place is located between the Wonder Lodge and the Horseshoe Inn (their elevator was decommissioned). I was expecting another Dover black button here but we found a Silver State. What a surprise. I like how they actually maintain the elevator rather than let it go to crap. There is minimal vandalism and it runs great. The motel is a different story though...
