This UNESCO world heritage site is a collection of 758 rock art locations across eastern Spain. It includes many types of art, such as cave paintings, engravings, petroglyphs and discovered objects. These cover an enormous span of history, from around 8000 BC to 3500 BC, and show human societies gradually transitioning from hunter-gatherer nomads, into settled agricultural tribes. For our site visit, we headed to Monte Arabi, on the coast near Alicante.

Painting the Neolithic: coastal rock art from the Balkans to the Iberian Peninsula
The Iberian Peninsula is well known in rock art research for the Schematic rock art tradition, which consists in paintings, mainly in red colour, of basic figures and symbols of anthropomorphs, animals, geometric motifs in rock shelters. It is widely believed that this artistic tradition originated towards the middle of the 6th millennium BC when the first economic and technological evidence of the Neolithic is documented in the Mediterranean area of the Iberian Peninsula. Intriguingly, schematic rock art sites are well documented also in many coastal regions of the Central Mediterranean, from the wide embayment of the Gulf of Lyon in France to the southern part of the Italian Peninsula, from then biggest islands (Corse, Sicily) to the immediate hinterland of the Balkan Adriatic coast. In this paper, we consider whether similarities in coastal rock art are supported by a model of maritime spread of the Neolithic, as seen from other classes of material evidence. On current knowledge, the Neolithic spread was not continuous but featured both temporal and spatial gaps (“jump dispersal” or “leap frogging”), which would fit with the known distribution of schematic paintings en-route from east to west. Evidence of long distance interaction and transfer of shared symbolic identities are discussed in the context of maritime connections, painting a fuller picture of the Neolithic.

Prehistoric Cave Etchings Found In Spain Feature Surprising Animal
More than 50 cave etchings thought to be around 14,500 years old have been found in the northern Spanish town of Lekeitio. Bizkaia regional official Unai Rementeria announced the discovery in a press conference Thursday. He said the etchings were a treasure of mankind, and of exceptional technical quality and visibility, adding yhat experts have praised the etchings as the most spectacular in the Iberian peninsula. The region of Bizkaia neighbors the region of Cantabria, home to the famous Altamira cave paintings, Spain's most prized prehistoric cave art site - also known as the Sistine Chapel of Paleolithic Art. Among the figures carved into the stone surface are horses, bison, goats and, for the first time, at least two lions.

Archaeology of Iberia: State of the Field
The Iberian Peninsula is rich in archaeological remains of global importance from Neanderthal tools to Phoenician ports and from Roman arches to mass graves from the Spanish Civil War. In spite of this, the archaeology of Iberia is little studied outside of the peninsula itself. Political and linguistic factors have resulted in relatively isolated academic and archaeological communities in Spain and Portugal in stark contrast to other Mediterranean nations, such as Italy and Greece, with long histories of international collaboration. In recent decades, however, the involvement of international scholars in cooperative projects in Iberia has increased notably. Nonetheless, there remain some stubborn divisions amongst Iberian archaeologists that hinder progress — for example, about the most appropriate types of archaeological method and theory, or between differing traditions in prehistoric and Classical archaeology. The time is ripe for conversation and debate about such issues. From February 27 through March 1, the Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World will host a conference and seminar series called Archaeology of Iberia: State of the Field. The event will provide a forum for international scholars across disciplines, temporal foci, and theoretical schools to discuss ongoing obstacles and future directions in the archaeology of this region.

Prehistoric Iberian Twins Have Been Found

Researchers at the Autonomous University of Barcelona have discovered the remains of newborn twin girls in the archaeological site of Olerdola in Barcelona. They date back to between the middle of the 4th century B.C. to the beginning of the 2nd century B.C. The findings are the first bone remains of twins to be recorded. Credit: SINC

What is it about Spain that created artists like Salvador Dali, Picasso, or a building like Sagrada Familia that combines color, nature, and epic imagination? There is definitely something happening in Spain, and I'm on a mission to find out.
I travel through the mountains of Spain to see where the architect Antoni Gaudi was inspired to design his famous basilica Sagrada Familia, and explores how new 3D printing technologies are being used to complete its construction. I then head to Salvador Dali’s former home and studio to understand how the culture of Catalonia influenced modern art.
I finish by heading to Madrid to see how modern artists like Okuda are leading the future of Spanish art. His bold, colorful, and powerful paintings, graffiti murals, and sculptures are amazing people around the world!

El arte prehistórico, trascendiendo su dimensión estética, fue concebido como un mecanismo de cohesión, identidad y comunicación. Los abrigos ofrecen una lectura de la dinámica de las poblaciones que ocuparon el ámbito territorial definido por el Corredor de Almansa y el Valle de Ayora en el marco de la neolitización del Arco Mediterráneo.
