Oh Italy,
How you have been so good to us. We flew into Milan, and drove 2 hours north into the Camonica Valley. We visited the largest collection of petroglyphs in the world! Over 140,000 figures and symbols carved on 104 rocks. Breath taking! There was a surprise concert we found and were able to take part in traditional Italian dances. An Archeopark for the kids, which was a replication of the petroglyphs and how people lived thousands of years ago. And even had an expected adventure of rock climbing???!!!! Oh and our little girl turned 1. All links to everything we did below :) We hope you will visit these amazing rock carvings one day for yourself!!

Just north of Thompson Springs in Utah, Sego Canyon is a quick side trip from I-70 for those who are interested in prehistoric rock art. But what makes the ancient artwork at Sego Canyon so unique is it features unusual-looking figures that some say are creatures not from this world.
Sego Canyon petroglyphs and pictographs were created by several cultures over a span of 8,000 years. The images depict large beings or creatures with haunting hollow or large eyes. Most with no arms or legs, sometimes with antennae or a halo around them.
2. Rock Drawings in Val Camonica
Known for having the largest collection of rock drawings in the world, Val Camonica contains over 250,000 petroglyphs spread over 6 locations in the valley of the Italian Alps.
Specifically located in the Province of Brescia, Italy, the collection of rock drawings was recognized as the first Italian World Heritage Site in 1979. It was initially believed to contain over 140,000 drawings of symbols and figures created by ancient man from as far back as 8,000 B.C. But over time, more and more images and drawings have been cataloged and it now numbers over 250,000. The drawings are spread out in these areas: Darfo Boario Terme, Nadro, Paspardo, Capo di Ponte and Cimbergo.

Located in Southern Algeria, the Tassili n’Ajjer is a large and vast desert plateau that runs between the regions of Niger and Libya. The entire region covers 72,000 square kilometers. For thousands of years, the climate in the area, coupled with extreme erosion, has left behind amazing geological features that include stunning stone pillars, beautiful natural arches, and deep canyons.

The stone carvings of Val Camonica (Camonica Valley) are located in the Province of Brescia, Italy, and constitute the largest collections of prehistoric petroglyphs in the world. The collection was recognized by Unesco in 1979 and was Italy's first recognized World Heritage Site. Unesco has formally recognized more than 140,000 figures and symbols, but new discoveries have increased the number of catalogued incisions to between 200,000 and 300,000. Parco Aymerich a Laconi tra Cascate Grotte e Boschi ~ 17 Aprile 2016 | Viaggiare in Sardegna
Rilassante gita al parco Aymerich a Laconi tra cascate, grotte, boschi e il castello medioevale, alla scoperta del più grande parco urbano della Sardegna.
La grande area verde di Laconi si estende per ben 24 ettari e può essere considerata sia un giardino botanico che un museo naturale.
Il parco fù fondato nel 1830 dal Marchese Ignazio Aymerich, senatore del regno d’Italia e appassionato collezionista di piante esotiche che crescono tutt'ora indisturbate tra i sentieri e le rocce calcaree, tra varie sorgenti, laghetti, grotte e cascate.
La cascata più imponente e suggestiva é sicuramente la Cascata Maggiore; dai suoi 12 metri di altezza percola attraverso le rocce e i muschio, generando nei secoli i cosiddetti travertini di cascata, particolari formazioni di carbonato di calcio.
Il parco è dotato di un'area picnic attrezzata e svariate panchine disseminale lungo i percorso, tutte rigorosamente di legno, alcune delle quali ricavate da grossi tronchi lavorati, situate prevalentemente nella zona inferiore del parco.
Il bosco d Aymerich è disseminato di piante tipiche della Sardegna come pini, lecci, corbezzoli, platani, ma il record per dimensione spetta all'imponente esemplare di cedro del Libano, enorme albero ultracentenario di oltre 4 metri di diametro e 25 metri di altezza.
Tra i boschi del parco adiacente all'area picnic troviamo le rovine del Castello medioevale di Aymerich, il palazzo nobiliare dei fondatori del parco.
Fondato nel lontano 1053, fù residenza dei Signori del feudo di Laconi fino alla prima metà dell'800, periodo durante il quale fù distrutto da un incendio.
Il primo edificio che si incontra è la robusta torre merlata a base quadrata, con al suo interno un ampio portale che permetteva l'accesso all'area antistante il castello.
Attraversato il portale, sulla destra una breve rampa di scale ci conduce all'ampia sala principale.
L'edificio è dotato di pianta rettangolare e di una serie di finestre ad arco in stile gotico - catalano, che permettono di godere di una splendida vista sul parco e sul paese di Laconi, mentre in lontananza possiamo ammirare la Marmilla e l’altopiano della Giara.
Tra la torre e la sala erano presente un altro edificio, di cui oggi rimane solo la il perimetro, una grande vasca e una pittoresca finestra.
A pochi metri dal castello sono presenti altre mura diroccate e, in mezzo al bosco vediamo quella che sembra essere un'altra vasca di pietra, circondata da pietre con incisi antichi simboli.
Proseguiamo il tour attraverso i sentieri di Laconi scoprendo alcune grotticelle tra le quali una più ampia e particolarmente suggestiva; vista da lontano sembra una faccia con la bocca aperta e gli occhi spalancati
Al suo interno il soffitto è abbastanza alto da permette di camminare in piedi ed è dotato di panchine di pietra, forse per la meditazione e la preghiera.
Nella parte più bassa del parco una antica mulattiera delimitata da alti muretti a secco ricoperti di muschio ci conduce ad una pittoresca fontana ricoperta parzialmente di rampicanti dove è incisa una data: 1899 .
Prima di tornare a casa osserviamo da vicino l'enorme cedro del Libano, il più grande albero del parco
