Waikiki Beach, Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii, United States, North America
Waikīkī is a beachfront neighborhood of Honolulu, on the south shore of the island of Oʻahu, in Hawaii, United States. Waikiki is best known for Waikīkī Beach, the white sand beach shoreline fronting the neighborhood. Waikīkī is home to public places including Kapiʻolani Park, Fort de Russy Military Reservation, Kahanamoku Lagoon, Kūhiō Beach Park, and Ala Wai Harbor. The name Waikīkī means spouting fresh water in the Hawaiian language, for springs and streams that fed wetlands that once separated Waikīkī from the interior. The area was a retreat for Hawaiian royalty in the 1800s who enjoyed surfing there on early forms of longboards. A few small hotels opened in the 1880s. In 1893, Greek-American George Lycurgus leased the guest house of Allen Herbert and renamed it the Sans Souci (French for without worries) creating one of the first beach resorts. Later that year Robert Louis Stevenson stayed at the resort; subsequently it became a popular destination for tourists from the mainland. The area at coordinates 21°15′49″N 157°49′17″W is still called Sans Souci Beach. Today, the area is filled with large resort hotels, such as the Hilton Hawaiian Village, the Halekulani hotel, the Hyatt Regency Waikīkī, the Sheraton Waikīkī, and historic hotels dating back to the early 20th century (such as the Moana Surfrider Hotel and the Royal Hawaiian Hotel). The beach hosts many events a year, including surf competitions, outdoor performances, hula dancing and outrigger canoe races. The neighborhood extends from the Ala Wai Canal (a channel dug to drain former wetlands) on the west and north, to Diamond Head (Lēʻahi) on the east. Waikīkī Beach is noted for its views of the Diamond Head tuff cone, its usually warm and cloud-free climate and its surf break.
The Waikīkī skyline is now dotted with an abundance of both high-rises and resort hotels. The beach is actually fairly short, with half of it marked off for surfers. For some distance into the ocean the water is quite shallow, although there are numerous rocks on the bottom. As with most ocean beaches the waves can have some force, particularly on windy days. The surf at Waikīkī is known for its long rolling break, making it ideal for long boarding, tandem surfing and beginners. Waikīkī's main thoroughfare is Kalakaua Avenue, named after King Kalakaua, which houses most of the high-end hotels (Royal Hawaiian, Sheraton, Hyatt, Moana Surfrider Hotel), most of the luxury designer brand stores (Apple Store, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Burberry, Dior, Tiffany & Co., Fendi, Cartier, Gucci & Coach) and popular surf clothing brand stores (Quiksilver, Billabong, Volcom). Waikīkī's other main thoroughfare, Kuhio Avenue, named after Prince Kuhio, is better known for its restaurants, cafes and grocers, along with its clubs, nightlife and prostitution. Over time, Waikīkī beach has had problems with erosion, leading to the construction of groynes and beach replenishment projects. For example, in the 1920s and 1930s sand was imported from Manhattan Beach, California, via ship and barge to Waikīkī. Importing stopped in the 1970s. Officials are looking for ways to sustain the existing sand by eliminating loss due to tide flow. Subject to permits, a partial restoration was completed in the spring of 2012. The proposed project imported sand from nearby shoals and widened the 1,700-foot (520 m) long beach by about 37 feet (11 m) between the Royal Hawaiian Hotel concrete groin and the Kūhiō Beach crib wall. The project restored the beach to its 1985 shoreline. China Airlines operates its Honolulu Branch Office in Waikīkī. NTT DoCoMo also has limited operations here for the convenience of Japanese tourists. Hawaiian Airlines is based in Honolulu. Hawaii Department of Education operates public schools. Thomas Jefferson Elementary School is located in Waikīkī proper, while Waikīkī Elementary School is located nearby, at the makai (southern) edge of the Kapahulu neighborhood. The Hawaii State Public Library System operates the Waikīkī Public Library at 400 Kapahulu Avenue.

Aloha! Waikiki, hula, muumuu, Honolulu? You don't know what we are taking about? Check out the top ten of Hawaii by Foreign Service Officer Catherine Muller. Did you know that surfing was invented by native Hawaiians? Or that Hawaii was once a monarchy? #50states #HI
Transcript:
Aloha! My name is Catherine and I come from the beautiful state of Hawaii. Hawaii was discovered by Polynesians between the 3rd and 7th centuries A.D. It was later explored by British Captain James Cook in 1778. Hawaii became a U.S. territory in 1898, and the 50th state of the U.S. on August 21, 1959.
When most people think of Hawaii, they think of Honolulu and our famous Waikiki Beach. We'll get to that in a minute, but did you know that Hawaii actually consists of 137 islands? Most people will only visit a few of the main 8 Hawaiian Islands. They are: O'ahu, Maui, Hawai'i, Kaua'i, Moloka'I, Lana'i, Ni'ihau, and Kaho'olawe. The most populated island is Oahu where the capitol city of Honolulu is located. It also happens to be my home island, and is nicknamed the gathering place.
I'd like to give you my Hawaii Top Ten! These are facts, places, and experiences that I think make my Hawaii unique.
Number 10: Hawaii is known as the land of aloha shirts and mu'umu'us. Both aloha shirts and loose dresses called mu'umu'us have bright Polynesian patterns.
Number 9: Many people only know Hawaii by what they see on TV and in movies. Classic American TV shows like Magnum PI and Hawaii Five-O were set in Hawaii. What about Jurassic Park, Avatar, and the hit TV show LOST? Hawaii's landscape has inspired many a film and TV producer.
Number 8: A vital part of the Hawaiian culture is hula. Hula is a Hawaiian form of dance that is accompanied by chanting or song and tells the stories, traditions, and culture of the Hawaiian people. Hula is performed in big fancy luaus for tourists, as well as in backyards at pretty much any special occasion. For example, I danced a hula at my wedding, a common practice at Hawaiian weddings today.
Number 7: If you come to my state, you can visit the only royal palace in the US that was used by a reigning monarch- 'Iolani Palace. In 1810, King Kamehameha, chief of the Big Island of Hawai'i, united all the Islands into one kingdom. In 1893, the monarchy was overthrown by American businessmen and a provisional government was established. Today, 'Iolani Palace is open to the public as a historic museum and shares the history of the Hawaiian Monarchy.
Number 6: The Dole Pineapple Plantation. In 1901 the Hawaiian Pineapple Company, now Dole, was established and the first pineapples were planted in Wahiawa. Other important crops in Hawaii include sugar, macadamia nuts, coffee, flowers, and seeds. I encourage you to try one of my favorite snacks, chocolate covered macadamia nuts. They are ono! That means delicious in the Hawaiian language.
Let's move on to Number 5: The U.S.S. Arizona Memorial. It marks the resting place of 1,102 sailors that were killed on the USS Arizona during the attack on Pearl Harbor by
Japanese forces on December 7, 1941. In 1949 the Pacific War Memorial Commission was created to build a permanent memorial in Hawaii. The US Navy insisted that it be in the form of a bridge floating above the ship.
Now we come to Number 4: Surfing! The first known occurrences of surfing come from the ancient Hawaiian tradition of he'e nalu, or wave sliding. In the early 1900s news about surfing had made its way to California, and in 1915, famed Hawaiian surfer and Olympic swimmer Duke Kahanamoku introduced surfing to Australia. In the 1950s surfers started tackling the big waves of the North Shore of Oahu, and today competitions are held at Banzai Pipeline, Sunset Beach, and Waimea Bay.
Moving on to Number 3: Hawaii is known for its active volcanoes. Hawaii emerged from the sea millions of years ago, forged by the power of volcanoes. If you visit the Big Island of Hawai'i, you can visit Maunaloa or Kilauea at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, where you can come face to face with an active volcano.
Number 2! I'd like to tell you a little about native Hawaiian food. Today, you can find a fusion of many cuisines, but traditional Hawaiian food is still popular and delicious. If you visit my state, I encourage you to try poi, made from the starchy taro root. You can try kalua pig, a favorite at most luaus. Kalua pig is traditionally cooked in an imu, an earth oven in which the pig will roast and steam for about 12 hours!
Number 1 is the famous Waikiki Beach. Waikiki was once the playground of the Hawaiian Royalty. The name, Waikiki, means spouting waters and is Oahu's main hotel and tourist area. Here you can find world class restaurants and shopping, as well as one of the busiest beaches in the Hawaiian Islands. If you want to try a more gentle surfing lesson than you'd find on the North Shore, Waikiki is a good starting point.

Hawai`i Renaissance - Standing on Sacred Ground
Watch Native Hawaiians call back the rain, and use indigenous ecological and spiritual practices to restore the sacred island of Kaho`olawe after 50 years of military use as a bombing range.
This scene comes from the Islands of Sanctuary episode of the four-part series, Standing on Sacred Ground. The episode also tells of Australia's Northern Territory where Aboriginal clans maintain Indigenous Protected Areas and resist the destructive effects of a mining boom.
Standing on Sacred Ground chronicles indigenous people in eight communities around the world standing up for their traditional sacred lands in defense of cultural survival, human rights and the environment. Watch them stand against industrial mega-projects, consumer culture, resource extraction, competing religions, tourists and climate change.
Standing on Sacred Ground was produced by the Sacred Land Film Project, a project of Earth Island Institute. To deepen public understanding of sacred places, indigenous cultures and environmental justice, the Film Project produces a variety of media and educational materials—films, videos, DVDs, articles, photographs, school curricula and other materials. The Sacred Land Film Project uses journalism, organizing and activism to rekindle reverence for land, increase respect for cultural diversity, stimulate dialogue about connections between nature and culture, and protect sacred lands and diverse spiritual practices.

Even with all the hotels and urban build-up, the natural beauty and cozy charm of this world-renowned crescent of sand cannot be denied. There’s a reason Waikiki is such an incredibly popular tourist destination: it’s an awesome beach with gentle waves, a scenic backdrop and offers a wealth of attractions in close proximity, including the zoo, the aquarium, the statue of surfing legend Duke Kahanamoku and lots, lots more. You'll find some of the islands' best shopping and dining here as well. End your day here with a walk along the boardwalk, some amazing food, and an obligatory tropical cocktail!
A Song of Old Hawaii - Hawaiian Dance
“A Song of Old Hawaii”
Recorded on July 1, 1940, this song was written by Gordon Beecher, with music composed by Johnny Noble. Johnny was one of the key figures behind the development of Hapa Haole style music in Honolulu and played a leading role in introducing Hawaiian music to the United States. The words and the music are beautiful!
The song goes:
There’s a perfume of a million flowers
Clinging to the heart of old Hawaii.
There’s a rainbow following the showers
Bringing me a part of old Hawaii.
There’s a silver moon, a symphony of stars
There’s a hula tune, and the hum of soft guitars.
There’s a trade-wind sighing in the heavens
Singing me a song of Old Hawaii.
