Glastonbury-Rocky Hill Ferry on the Connecticut River
Filmed on July 19, 2011.
From ConnDOT web site, History
The nation's oldest continuously operating ferry service crosses the Connecticut River between Rocky Hill and Glastonbury.
The original ferry, which dates back to 1655, was a small raft pushed across the river using long poles. Under State charter, the ferry service was operated by local families throughout most of its existence. The ferry service was such a vital transportation link within the region that crossing would cease only during the most adverse conditions.
When river flood levels escalated, the ferry would use alternate landings such as the old coal dock in South Glastonbury, or the ferry operator would skid the craft across inundated meadows to an old dock near Tryon Street. Today the ferry is temporarily closed if the river reaches flood stage.
At one time, a horse on a treadmill in the center of the craft supplied the power to propel the craft across the river. In 1876, the ferry was modernized into a steam driven craft. Today's craft is an open flatboat named the Hollister III. The three-car barge is towed back and forth by the Cumberland, a diesel powered towboat. The ferry provides a convenient, direct link between Rocky Hill and Glastonbury at Route 160.
Due to state budget woes, the service may be shut down permanently later this year.

Riding the Glastonbury/Rocky Hill ferry
(WTNH) -- Before our web of highways, roads and bridges, before mass transportation was introduced, a small raft pushed along by poles was all it took to get people and goods across the Connecticut River. It's the Rocky Hill / Glastonbury Ferry.
Riding the oldest ferry in the US from Rocky Hill to Glastonbury
We are on Connecticut State Route 160 in Rocky Hill, where we see and then board the oldest continuously operating ferry in the United States; the Rocky Hill to Glastonbury Ferry, which crosses the Connecticut River. The ferry originated in 1655 and was moved by pole. Over time, the ferry evolved from a pole to an oar to a horse on a treadmill to a steam powered boat to the current day incarnation, which is a diesel powered tugboat. The ferry barge is named Hollister III and the tugboat is named Cumberland. Cumberland was built in 1953 by Blount Marine Corporation, is a single screw, and is powered by a Detroit Diesel V6-71 for a rated 140 horsepower. Overall, the trip takes about 4 minutes. The price is 3 dollars for a car and 1 dollar for a pedestrian or cyclist. As a side note, the State of Connecticut has owned and run this operation since 1917, and the ferry is operational between May 1st and October 31st. Here is a website with a more detailed description of the ferry

Rocky Hill Glastonbury Ferry
THE MOST INTERESTING FERRY IN AMERICA....... FOR 357 YEARS!!!
The Rocky Hill -- Glastonbury Ferry is a seasonal ferry crossing the Connecticut River between the towns of Glastonbury and Rocky Hill, Connecticut and at 357 years, is the oldest continuously running ferry in the United States,
Started in 1655, it was originally a raft that was poled across the Connecticut River, it was then for a while powered by a horse on a treadmill before being upgraded to a steamship in 1876. Today's ferry is a 3-car barge named the Hollister III towed by a diesel towboat named the Cumberland.
The ferry is the only river crossing accessible to pedestrians and bicyclists between Hartford and Middletown, preventing what would otherwise be a thirteen mile detour for them. Operating between May 1 and October 31, the toll for cars is $3 and for cyclists & pedestrians is $1.
This ferry was used in the music video for Billy Joel's River of Dreams.
