This is just an epic example of ancient Roman technology. Pont du Gard was a part of a water supply system that stretched over many kilometers to supply water from Alps to the city of Nimes.

Pont du Gard, France
The Roman aqueduct of Pont du Gard in the south of France near Avignon is one of the greatest sights in all of ancient history. It's an incredibly impressive structure, in fact, the tallest ancient bridge and the second highest structure the Romans ever built, after the Colosseum in Rome which is just six feet higher.
Pont du Gard is part of an ancient, water channel about 31 miles in length, built mostly on or beneath the ground to carry water to Nimes. The Romans constructed this bridge across the valley about 2,000 years ago to maintain an even flow of water with just a very slight change in level, dropping only about one inch every 300 feet. This engineering miracle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Three levels of arches hold up the water channel that runs across the top. The tallest arches that Roman engineers ever built are on the bottom. Their buildings relied heavily on the arch, for many interior spaces were differing variations of this critical feature: large rooms were often made with barrel-vaulted ceilings, really a series of arches connected together, and an arch could also be spun around on its axis to form a dome, another important Roman innovation.
Coming all this way to Pont du Gard, you want to fully enjoy the various vistas for a complete appreciation. The paved path from the visitor center affords some decent views, but don't settle for this. Stroll across the bridge, then up a well-marked hillside path to gain access to the aqueduct's upper level where you can actually walk through the canal itself. It is partly open and partly covered, forming a dark tunnel that tall folks will need to stoop to get through. In ancient times it was completely covered over to protect the water. Here you acquire first-hand respect for the amazing engineering skill that created this marvel.
Exiting the aqueduct channel, walk back down slope, then along the stream on the sunny side of the structure for a few hundred yards to get the best possible view looking back toward the soaring masterpiece. Perhaps you'll get lucky and have a calm day with a mirror reflection of the bridge in the river's smooth surface. This is one of the world's most astonishing ancient sights, a marvel inherited from antiquity.
Keep one eye on the clock, for you might want to catch the bus to Avignon, leaving the same traffic circle at 1:22pm and arriving back in Avignon at 2:00pm. You do want that 1:22pm bus because the next one is at 6:45pm, reasonable only if you spent more time in Nimes earlier in the day. Otherwise, it's nice to be back in the great city of Avignon by mid-afternoon to catch up on sights you may have missed, do more shopping, or take a nap to recover from these three intensive days.

Bonjour à tous , la saison plongée 2015 a été intense cette année , et s'est achevée sur une plage du pont du Gard ou nous nous sommes retrouvés pour un pique-nique et un défi pas comme les autres .En effet , sous une initiative de CYRIELLE et de RÉMI , le but était de remonter le gardon jusqu’au arches du pont du Gard de nuit .Chose faite maintenant .

Le pont du Gard a été construit peu avant l'ère chrétienne pour permettre à l'aqueduc de Nîmes, long de près de 50 km, de franchir le Gardon. En imaginant ce pont de 50 m de haut à trois niveaux, dont le plus long mesure 275 m, les ingénieurs hydrauliciens et architectes romains ont créé un chef-d'œuvre technique qui est aussi une œuvre d'art.

ANCIENT CITIES OF SOUTHERN FRANCE 1930s TRAVELOGUE 88354
Made by famed filmmaker Andre De La Varre, whose Screen Traveler series was popular in the USA and often shown in movie theaters, ANCIENT CITIES OF SOUTHERN FRANCE shows the Roman, Visigoth and other ancient structures of the South of France. These include castles made and fortified over many centuries in the Pyrenees, walled cities, the Pont Du Gard, Avignon, St-Remy-de-Provence, Arles, Nimes, Narbonne, Perpignan, Aigues Mortes, Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, Sommieres, Carcassonne, Collioure and more. The film also presents a terrific view of France in the pre-war period. At 9:45 the city of Marseilles is shown, including its incredible transporter bridge, or Transbordeur Bridge.
The Marseille transporter bridge, inaugurated in 1905 and destroyed in 1944, was a crossing of the Old Port of Marseille, designed by engineer Ferdinand Arnodin. The bridge of Marseille was built in nineteen months to connect the quays of the Port and the quays of Rive Neuve. It was inaugurated on 15 December 1905. In the 1930s, it served only as a decoration, due to the lack of means to maintain it.
On 22 August 1944, the German military blew up the bridge to block the port during the liberation of Marseille, but only the north tower fell into the water. The rest collapsed on 1 September 1945, following the firing of 400 kg of explosives.
Born in Washington D.C. in 1902, Andre de la Varre quit school at age 17, bought a motion picture camera, and went to Europe. He began making his own travel films and in 1924 became a cameraman for Burton Holmes, the dean of travel filmmakers. In the early 1930's, de la Varre went out on his own as The Screen Traveler and made theatrical shorts for independent release as well as for many of the major Hollywood Studios. De la Varre continued traveling and making films for the next forty years and died in Vienna, Austria at the age of 87.
