PAN AM WINGS TO ITALY 1960s TRAVELOGUE ROME VENICE CAPRI 47554
Wings To Italy is a Pan American World Airways promotional video from the 1960s. Produced by Vision Associates, the film opens with shots of Roman ruins (00:28) and the Colosseum (01:29) before taking viewers on a tour of Italy, beginning in Rome. A panoramic shot of Rome (03:30) shows the size of the city and its unique skyline. St. Peter’s Square and Basilica (03:42) is the first place the film visits, before taking viewers to other historical points of interest, including: Victor Emmanuel II Monument (04:10), Castel Sant’Angelo (04:16), Capitoline Hill (04:20), Spanish Steps (04:24), Fountain of Neptune (04:27), and Trevi Fountain (04:31).
Rome’s modern places worth visiting range from bustling streets (04:43) lined with cafes and shops, and top-rated restaurants. Visitors to Rome can take in an evening of opera amid Roman ruins, such as Giuseepi Verdi’s Aida at the old Roman baths of Caracalla (05:46). Da Meo Patacca (06:22) is an outdoor restaurant that takes up an entire city square and features a festive mix of food, wine, singing, and dancing. The island of Sardinia is the next stop. The island (07:30) with its beautiful beaches and rugged landscapes is also home to fine works of art. Weavers use traditional looms (08:08) to make beautiful rugs, while artists create sculptures (08:19) out of metal; the famous sculptor Franco d’Aspro (08:45) works in bronze in his studio. At the fishing villages of Sardinia (09:04), visitors are welcome and often join fishermen on their fleet for an experience of a lifetime. The highlight of southern Italy is the Amalfi Coast with its famous Amalfi Drive (10:08), a stretch of road that takes visitors past seaside cliffs and small towns. The regions main towns (Naples, Sorrento, Amalfi, and Capri) capture a tranquil and romantic atmosphere (11:51) beloved by residents and visitors alike. The countryside town of Assisi is home to the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi (13:31), which houses beautiful old frescoes (13:46) that retell the life of St. Francis. The film’s next stop is in Florence (14:31), with a sweeping panoramic shot of the city (14:43). Florence is home to the majestic Florence Cathedral (14:50), Giotto’s bell tower (15:13), Brunelleschi’s Dome (15:15)—part of Florence Cathedral, and the “Gates of Paradise,” the incredible bronze work (15:32) of Lorenzo Ghiberti on the doors of the Baptistery of St. John. Footage of the city’s streets, the old bridge Ponte Vecchio (16:23) with its excellent shops, and Florentine restaurants—including Paoli (16:47, one of the world’s oldest restaurants—wrap up the visit to Florence. The next stop is in the north of the country. Lake Como (17:30) is home to scenic lakeside towns, beautiful hillsides dotted with ornate homes, and all kinds of activities to keep one busy. Visitors to Lake Como enjoy relaxing at cafes, swimming, and sailing (18:48). A musician sings (19:35) while aerial footage of the lake (19:48) stress the areas natural beauty. The tour of Italy continues with a quick trip to the Dolomites (20:14), Italy’s breathtaking “Pale Mountains,” before arriving at the final destination: Venice. Venice, with its famous canals and gondolas (21:50) is the best way to explore the city. While there are many things to see in Venice, including the Bridge of Sighs (23:02), the city’s highlight is St. Mark’s Square (22:44; 23:32) with St. Mark’s Basilica (23:27) and bell tower (22:36). A footage of Italian craft makers and artists (24:27), an aerial shot of St. Mark’s Square and Venice (25:29), and a montage of shots of the film’s highlighted cities conclude the film.
This film is part of the Periscope Film LLC archive, one of the largest historic military, transportation, and aviation stock footage collections in the USA. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD, 2k and 4k. For more information visit
