VIA APPIA ANTICA, ROMA, ITALY (1 of 2)
PARTE 1 DI 2 / PART 1 OF 2.
Forum Romain – Introduction – Rome – Audioguide – MyWoWo Travel App

20 Temple of Romulus
The basilica of Santi Cosma e Damiano is a church in the Roman Forum, parts of which incorporate original Roman buildings. The circular building at the entrance onto the Forum (not used today) was built in the early 4th century as a Roman temple, thought to have been dedicated to Valerius Romulus, deified son of the emperor Maxentius. The main building was perhaps the library of an imperial forum.
It became a church in 527 and contains important but much restored early Christian art, especially in its mosaics. The basilica, devoted to the two Arab brothers, doctors, martyrs and saints Cosmas and Damian, is located in the Forum of Vespasian, also known as the Forum of Peace.
The Temple is traditionally held to have been dedicated by Emperor Maxentius to his son and co-consul Valerius Romulus, who died in 309 and was given divine honours. The temple building was probably part of a rebuilding program of incredible intensity undertaken by Maxentius in the area, following a disastrous fire in 306; the project was only part-complete at his death. The temple's identification with Valerius Romulus is tentative, based on the spot-find of a coin dated to 307 AD showing the distinctive shape of the building, and a nearby dedication to Valerius Romulus as a divinised mortal.
In 1947, the restorations of the Imperial Forums gave a new structure to the church. The old entrance, through the Temple of Romulus, was closed, and the temple restored to its original forms; with the Pantheon, the Temple of Romulus is the best preserved pagan temple in Rome.
A new entrance was opened on the opposite side (on via dei Fori Imperiali), whose arch gives access to the cloister, and through this to the side of the basilica.
FUORISALONE 2015 ZONA SANTAMBROGIO | video report
EAT URBAN FOOD TRUCK FESTIVAL

Anio Novus & Aqua Claudia at Porta Maggiore (manortiz)
In 52 AD Emperor Claudius built a double monumental arch across Via Prenestina and Via Labicana (today Via Casilina) to celebrate the completion of two aqueducts. The plate shows the fortifications which turned the arch into a well protected gate. The walls built by Emperor Aurelian in 275 reduced the size of the openings of the arch; Emperor Honorius built a new gate in front of the old one in the early Vth century; it was flanked by a high tower and by a smaller one which incorporated a funerary monument.
Maggiore in Italian means greater, but the name given to the gate is not related to its size; it is thought to be a contraction of Porta di S. Maria Maggiore because it allowed direct access to that basilica; others suggest it was a reference to Aula Majoris, a large hall of a nearby palace owned by St. Helena. The gate was also known as Porta di S. Croce because of its proximity to S. Croce in Gerusalemme. Vasi believed that its ancient name was Nevia, but he was wrong. Porta Nevia was a (lost) gate of the Servian walls and it was situated near S. Balbina on the Aventine hill.
In 1838 Pope Gregory XVI decided to partially free the monumental arch by removing the gate built by Honorius; the remaining fortifications were pulled down after the unification of Italy in 1870. In 1956 the ground was brought back to its original lower level and cars were no longer allowed to go through the gate.
Three lengthy inscriptions celebrate the completion of two aqueducts by Emperor Claudius and their restoration by Emperor Vespasian and his son Titus. An interesting aspect of the inscriptions is that they show the growing power of the emperors.
In the first inscription Claudius was described as:
TI. CLAUDIUS DRUSI F. CAESAR AUGUSTUS GERMANICUS PONTIF. MAXIM. TRIBUNICIA POTESTATE XII CO(n)S(ul) V IMPERATOR XXVII PATER PATRIAE ..
his name and the references to his family were followed by Germanicus, a title given to him for war victories, and by a series of positions he held in the frame of the republican institutions: pontifex maximus, tribune of the people, consul, imperator and father of the nation; the numbers say how many times a position was held. Imperator was just one of Claudius' titles and it was not given a particular evidence.
The inscription for Vespasian starts as follows:
IMP(erator) CAESAR VESPASIANUS AUGUST. followed by the reference to the positions he held.
Finally the inscription for Titus begins with:
IMP(erator) T(itus). CAESAR DIVI F(ilius) VESPASIANUS.
In these cases the title of imperator was emphasized by being placed at the beginning of the inscription.
Similar (but shorter) inscriptions can be seen on the inner side of Porta Tiburtina.
Anio Novus and Aqua Claudia were two aqueducts which carried water from springs near Subiaco in the Apennine Mountains. They joined together some seven miles east of Rome. You can see picturesque images of them in a page describing a walk to Porta Furba. You may wish to walk along Via Prenestina and see some other Roman monuments or follow the steps of German historian Ferdinand Gregorovius who started from here his walks in the Roman countryside or learn more about Roman inscriptions.
The upper part of the outer gate built by Emperor Honorius was relocated to the left side of Porta Maggiore. Historians set the split of the Roman Empire at the death of Emperor Theodosius in 395. His two sons (Arcadius and Honorius) ruled over two separate entities: the Eastern and the Western Roman Empires. The inscriptions on the gates built/restored by Honorius show that in Rome there was not awareness of this split because they make reference to both emperors.

(PUCCINI): American Soprano Anna FITZIU: Vissi d'arte (c.1920)
American Soprano Anna FITZIU (1887-1967) / Vissi d'arte (La Tosca) / Puccini / Recorded: c.1920 --
Anna Fitziu (April 1, 1887 – April 20, 1967): American soprano who had a prolific international opera career during the early part of the 20th century. Her signature roles included Fiora in L'amore dei tre re, Mimi in La Boheme, Nedda in Pagliacci, and the title roles in Isabeau, Madama Butterfly, and Tosca. After her singing career ended, she embarked on a second career as a voice teacher. Among her notable pupils was opera singer Shirley Verrett.
She was born as Anna Powell in Huntington, West Virginia on April 1, 1887. Fitziu began her career as a chorus girl and concert soloist in New York City in 1902. At this point in her career she worked under the name Anna Fitzhugh, taking the last name from an old Virginia family (a member of which included Continental Congress delegate William Fitzhugh) that she was related to. She went to Chicago in early 1903 to portray a number of smaller roles in the musical comedy The Wizard. She remained in Chigago through 1904 appearing in leading roles in operettas and musical comedies like Baroness Fiddlesticks and Sergeant Brue. From 1905 to 1906, she performed on the American vaudeville circuit. In 1906 Fitziu went to Paris where she studied singing with William Thorner for several years. She adopted the stage name Anna Fitziu when she made her first opera appearance in 1910 at the Teatro Dal Verme in Milan as Elsa in Richard Wagner's Lohengrin. She remained in Italy for the next five years, performing in lead roles at such opera houses as the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, the Teatro di San Carlo, the Teatro Massimo, and La Fenice. She also made appearances at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City and the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. In 1915 Fitziu was offered a short term contract at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. She accepted, making her debut with the company as Rosario in the world premiere of Enrique Granados's Goyescas on January 28, 1916 with Giovanni Martinelli as Fernando, Flora Perini as Pepa, Giuseppe De Luca as Paquiro, and Gaetano Bavagnoli conducting. It was the only role she ever performed at the Met, although she did appear in several Sunday Night Concerts at the house. In 1916 she was committed to the New Orleans Opera. From 1917-1919, Fitziu was a principal soprano of the Chicago Opera Association. With the company she notably portrayed the title role in the world premiere of Henry Kimball Hadley's Azora, the Daughter of Montezuma on December 26, 1917 and portrayed the title role in the United States premiere of Alfredo Catalani's Loreley in 1919. She later sang with the Chicago Civic Opera from 1922 to 1926. In 1921 and 1926 she toured the United States with the San Carlo Opera Company. On November 6, 1924 she sang Mimì in La bohème for the very first performance presented by the Philadelphia Civic Opera Company. She also appeared in operas at the Ravinia Festival in the early 1920s and appeared at the Havana Opera in 1924 as Desdemona in Otello with Giovanni Martinelli in the title role. In 1927 Fitziu retired from the stage after suffering a nervous breakdown. She turned to writing for a time and was able to publish some works of short fiction. She took up teaching singing privately in New York City in 1929. She continued to teach singing for the rest of her life, first in Chicago and then in Los Angeles. Among her notable pupils was Shirley Verrett. She died on April 22, 1967 in Hollywood, California, at the age of 80, after falling down a staircase. She was engaged to Andrés de Segurola in 1920, but they never married. She then married Dr. John J. Harty, who pre-deceased her.
