Haunted History of :The Hundley House, Carbondal,Jackson County, Illinois, United States
Someone got away with Murder
This historic brick home on Main Street with accents such as an original Art Nouveau stained-glass window was the site of an unsolved murder Dec. 12, 1928, in which the residents for whom the house is named — former Mayor J. Chas Hundley and his wife, Luella Hundley — were shot and killed.
According to newspaper reports at the time: Mr. Hundley was shot in the head from behind, while he was sitting on the edge of the bed ready to retire. Mrs. Hundley was slain a few moments later by the same fiend, who rushed downstairs after murdering her husband, shot to death in cold blood.Luella Hundley met her doom in the kitchen at the rear of the home.
No one was ever convicted in the Hundleys' deaths.Too much time has passed — more than eight decades — and too much of the grisly slayings' sparse evidence has disappeared to hope for resolution now. All that remains are sensational news accounts and a handful of brass .45-caliber shell casings covered with a heavy patina.
Justice, it seems, will not be done. Hope has been replaced by ghost stories about Hundley House, now a bed and breakfast on West Main Street.
Speculation on the killing abounds with tales of shady connections the family may have had in the heyday of prohibition and mobsters. The only suspect was Hundley's son, who was allegedly involved in a bootlegging ring. He was never charged.
Victor Hundley, still the killer in many eyes, moved to St. Louis for a while before returning to Southern Illinois and living out his remaining years near the Midland Hills Country Club. He now rests near his father in a Carbondale cemetery.
The hole from the 45-caliber bullet that ended Luella's life still remains by the private back staircase leading up from the kitchen of the current gift and wine shop to private rental quarters.
Guests and residents have reported ghostly activity continuously for the last seven decades. The porch swing starts swinging by itself on windless nights, pots and pans bang in the kitchen, doors open and close, and lights turn on and off by themselves.
Tenants who live in the upper level of the house also have reported creaking on the steps where Luella was slain.

A number of the past owners and tenants in the building have had strange encounters that they are unable to explain. One former resident told of loud knocking sounds that reverberated in her room at night and the faint sound of the downstairs piano as the keys tinkled by themselves. Her family also recalled hearing footsteps going up and down the stairs, as if perhaps the killer of the Hundleys was doomed to repeat his walk to J.C. Hundley’s bedroom again and again.
Former owner Victoria Sprehe said that whenever she was alone in the house, lights would turn on by themselves, as if someone were watching over her. She said that she believed that Luella’s ghost followed her home from work on at least one occasion. Walking into the empty house, she heard pots and pans clanging and noticed that lights were on in the kitchen. However, she noted, “It’s not like a scary presence. It’s a very peaceful vibe.”
Perhaps it’s not a scary presence, but it could be unnerving. Sprehe was sometimes bothered by a door that opened by itself and by footsteps that she heard walking on the stairs – the same stairs where a previous family also reported disembodied steps. Tenants who lived in apartments on the upper floor also told stories of the creaking stairs and what definitely seemed to be the sound of boots, or heavy shoes, clomping on the wooden risers. One tenant laughed and stated that this was only the sound of the old house settling and then lost his grin when he admitted that he had never heard of a house that settled in just that way.
Victoria Sprehe’s daughter, Nina Bucciarelli, also recounted odd incidents in the house, like the front porch swing that would move by itself, even when there was no wind. Sprehe’s husband had also noticed this odd occurrence. Nina had her own explanation for the swing’s strange movement. “At night, if you drive by the porch swing, it’s just swinging away. I think Mr. and Mrs. Hundley still like to swing at night,” she said.
And perhaps she’s right, because if the stories of the past decades are to be believed, the Hundleys have not yet departed from the house they called their own – and the place where their lives were taken away too soon.
An excerpt from Troy Taylor's book, BLOODY ILLINOIS.
Victor Hundley, still the killer in many eyes, moved to St. Louis for a while before returning to Southern Illinois and living out his remaining years near the Midland Hills Country Club. He now rests near his father in a Carbondale cemetery.

This isn't your average outing or everyday experience—Breakout is for those who would rather solve mysteries than watch someone else have all the fun. With different rooms that follow unique storylines, you and your friends will have 60 minutes to escape your adventure of choice by cracking codes, solving puzzles and following clues. Part problem solving, part adrenaline, end-to-end fun.
What are Escape Rooms?
Your team assembles inside a themed room—it could be a prison cell or a ritzy casino. A game master explains the challenge and exits the room. The door closes. The clock begins counting down from 60 minutes. Your team scatters to examine every inch of the space and find clues. Does this mystery scroll hold the key? What about this blinking purple light? And what do these footprints on the floor mean? The escape room adventure has begun! The clock is ticking! Are you and your friends smart enough to solve the mystery and escape?
Escape rooms are a fun, safe, hour-long adventure where you and your friends must discover clues and solve a mystery to escape a locked room. Inspired by popular escape-the-room video games, it's a beat-the-clock adventure that relies on the cunning of you and your teammates. Simply put, escape rooms are more fun than playing Candy Crush on your phone for the zillionth time, more exciting than going to the movies, and a lot more intellectually stimulating than playing laser tag or paintball. The first escape room opened in the United States in 2012 and now there are over 1,750 locations. What explains the surge in popularity in such a short time span? According to Scott Nicholson, a professor of game design and development at Wilfrid Laurier University, players eager to look at something other than a glowing screen are flocking to games in the physical world for face-to-face engagement opportunities. (source)
Additionally, escape rooms are an inclusive game that can be played by just about anyone. These locked-room adventures are perfect for all ages and physical abilities and your team can be made up of family, friends, or coworkers. When booking an escape room experience keep in mind you'll generally need a minimum of two people or a maximum of 7-8 in order to play.

5 Most Haunted Places in Chicago Explained by a Ghost Expert and a Historian
Chicago often ranks among the most haunted cities in the United States, but not everyone is a fan of ghost stories. When I asked Northwestern University professor and historian Bill Savage to weigh in, he said, “Chicago is haunted not by ghosts, but by the city’s neglect of the working class.” Whether you believe in the supernatural or not (I’m with Bill), most of Chicago’s enduring ghost stories contain at least a kernel of historical truth. With that in mind, here are the ten “most haunted” sites in the city.

Room Description:
Harry Houdini was the world’s foremost illusionist and escape artist. On his deathbed, he made a pact with his devoted wife, Bess, that he would attempt to communicate with her from the hereafter. To confirm his presence, Harry was to reveal the phrase “Rosabel, Believe”, a reference to his and Bess’ favorite musical tune.
Every year since, on the anniversary of her husband’s death, October 31st, 1926, Bess has performed a seance at the Knickerbocker Hotel desperately hoping to contact her husband one last time.
The year is 1936, and after her tenth attempt, Bess has just publicly conceded defeat:
“My last hope is gone. I do not believe that Houdini can come back to me or to anyone. The Houdini Shrine has burned for ten years. I now reverently turn out the lights. Good night, Harry.”
However, not everyone present at the final seance believed things were truly over. A cryptic note in Houdini’s manager’s will said “ I have spoken to Harry and discovered a path to contact the other side. The steps are laid out in front of you in plain site. Find my notes and you will be granted access to the underworld.”
Your mission is to unravel the clues and contact Houdini before midnight strikes and the hotel removes the shrine and closes the door forever. You are the last chance to reunite Harry and Bess before they are separated for eternity.

**UPDATE: Due to legal matters, I am not allowed to say any more information regarding the exact location of this hotel. Please stop asking. Thank you!
This video was submitted to us by the hotel security manager who was standing watch on September 14, 2003 at a WINGATE HOTEL in Illinois. His voice can be heard in the background of the recording.
According to him, people staying at the hotel began calling in noise complaints to the front desk with reports of loud screaming coming from the 2nd floor--particularly room #209. There is no known history to the room according to our investigation. However, upon further review, we found that over the years, multiple complaints of strange noises were reported to be coming from the room. This is the only known recording of it.
Note to comments:
It's funny how people think this video is edited/fake. The audio is a mix down between the security camera audio and a separate recording from inside the office (which is specifically there to record in case of robbery to the hotel). People will always come to there own conclusions why a video is fake (like cameras pointed at the door). What they don't realized is that there are about 80 cameras in the hallways around the hotel, all pointing at doors and hallways.
