Castle For Sale in Michigan, USA
STEP INTO THE CASTLE AND step back in time to a home modeled after a fifth-century castle built near Nuremberg, Germany. The Castle was crafted during the 1920s in Jackson, Michigan, by the eccentric violinist Max Helmer. Helmer was the local Liberace of his day, a wealthy musician who inherited a large estate from his father, a prominent Jackson banker, Fred Helmer. Helmer fell in love with medieval structures while touring Europe in the 1920s as a concert violinist. The Castle was designed for seclusion, but enjoys beautiful views on one of the most elevated points in the area.
Builder C.J. Jorgensen crafted the tower using fieldstone from the surrounding region. More than 500 tons of rock and 300 barrels of cement were used to build the first five floors. Jorgensen used horses, nine helpers and a crane. The tower walls are 3-feet-wide at the base, and are tapered to the top. Beneath the structure is a customary castle feature, a dungeon, entered through a trap door on the first floor. The Castle has been renovated to seamlessly conjoin the old and the new, the pinnacle of which is the 3-story addition completed in 1942. This project added a great room, master suite, family room, and modernized kitchen to the property; thus, bringing the home in line with contemporary living while maintaining its historical charm.
A History of Family, Friends, Adventure and Escape: When the, then newlywed, current owners decided to move from the Detroit area to a more peaceful, slowpaced location to raise a young family - their wildest dreams couldn’t have prepared them for what they discovered.
The Castle they found hidden on the highest point of Jackson County in Lower Michigan (National
Geological Survey Market on-site) proved to transform both the place and their family in an almost magical
way. The unique setting in which to raise a family and the inherent responsibility to continue the fascinating
history of the property, proved to be a bonding experience and the quest of a lifetime for the current owners.
Early years at the Castle for this family were spent together pruning, clearing and landscaping the grounds for
year-round fun outdoors. Undertaking countless renovations and restorations, which transformed the property
from the original medieval vision of the eccentric Max Helmer into what is now a truly unique modern
home.

i made this on my summer friday- a 10 hr shoot.
For the production junkies:
no storyboards, no lighting kit, loose story format, choreographed on the fly. I just got my actor friend Joe, and Jon Truei and his stunt team and made it all up as we went along.
used 1 wide angle, 1 fish eye lens.
Editing and vfx are my own doing- roughly 30hrs spent in total with a self-enforced time limit.
Workflow: Filmed on a Canon hv30 at 24p using the exposure lock trick. Captured with HDV Split .77 beta and removed the 30fps wrapper using the After Effects technique. 1 hr of HDV footage uncompressed to 350 GB! I rendered down to a 640x352 working size. Did the edit in Adobe Premiere Pro and the vfx/color correction in After Effects. Both were CS3 and on Windows XP.
Digital assets from videocopilot.net and detonation films were used. Audio assets were from shockwave-sound.com and soundrangers.com.
Cheers to Jon Truei and the stunt team, and Joe. If you're in the Tri-state area and want to shoot, these are a great bunch.

Couple Stunned After They’re Charged With Murder in Death of 10-Month-Old
A Michigan couple has been charged with murder for allegedly starving their 10-month-old daughter to death. Seth Welch and his wife, Tatiana, both 27, stand accused of starving their infant daughter, Mary. She was found dead in their home near Grand Rapids on August 2. Seth’s jaw dropped when the judge read off the charges and Tatiana sobbed uncontrollably during the hearing. DoSeum in San Antonio
This is from the newly updated DoSeum in San Antonio. We aren't local to the area, but this is a FABULOUS museum for the kids. Everything is hands on: control robots, play in the water and/or sand, be a spy, pretend to shop at the store, pretend to work in an airplane/airport, pretend to be a vet... there is literally everything there. I've been to quite a few play areas for kids and this place is absolutely the best place I've ever been (so far).
I wish I could've gotten better video, but I didn't want to video anyone else's children.

Irene Butter: Shores Beyond Shores | Talks at Google
Irene Hasenberg Butter is a well-known peace activist, Holocaust survivor, and Professor Emerita of Public Health at the University of Michigan. Since the late 80's she's been a frequent and favored inspirational speaker, talking about her experience during World War II and stressing the importance of “never a bystander” and that one person can make a difference. Irene is the co-founder of Zeitouna, an organization of Jewish and Arab women working for peace, and a founder of the Raoul Wallenberg Project at the University of Michigan.
As Irene's father fights to save his family during the Holocaust, Irene’s childhood is lost. Play is restricted. Family and friends disappear. Finally, with the Dutch police at their door comes the reality that Irene’s father has not moved his family far enough from Hitler’s Germany. By 1945, the family is struggling to survive a death camp. Irene tends her ailing parents, cares for starving kids, and even helps bring clothes to her Amsterdam neighbor Anne Frank, before her family is offered a singular chance for freedom. Irene Butter’s memoir, Shores Beyond Shores, is an account of how the heart keeps its common humanity in the most inhumane and turbulent of times. Irene’s hard-earned lessons are a timeless
inspiration.
