Bantony Castle Shimla
Bantony Castle and Bantony Cottage :
The decaying Bantony Estate comprises of two grand private heritage buildings, namely Bantony Castle and Bantony Cottage. Once the summer palace of the erstwhile Maharaja of Sirmaur, Sir Amar Prakash Bahadur lent this Estate as a gesture to show his thorough faithfulness to the cause of British Empire. The Estate was used for Military Works Office until the end of wars. The building lies in the town's heritage zone.
Before its construction in 1880 the site had a small cottage that belonged to Capt A Gordon which housed some army officers.
Maharaja of Sirmaur got the present Estate built in somewhat eclectic part mock-Tudor, part chalet and crowned with sloping roofs with mini-towers. The architect is said to be T.E.G. Cooper. The original gate was erected in 1902-03 outside the building which was cast in the Nahan Foundry. The coat-of-arms of the maharaja can still be seen in the cast-iron railing in front of the Estate. This beautiful railing was destroyed by RSS activists around 1972 to show their protest against anything that reminded them of the British Raj, little knowing that the coat-of-arms actually belonged to Maharaja of Sirmaur and not of British Empire. They forced Municipal Corporation and Electricity Board also to remove the Lion Crests of British Empire from the Electric Lamp Posts.
Since 1957 the castle building, now in an advanced state of decay, had been the headquarters of state police. It was formally vacated about three years back after a court case.
The Bantony Cottage also remained occupied by Employment Exchange for very long. They emptied the building only when it became truly dangerous for life.

Abandoned House in Shimla, India
Walking around Shimla (Simla), I found this abandoned house just off the beaten track. Looks to of been a nice house in it's time, but since fallen from grace.
Would of been a great view from the first floor, but the whole structure was in a bad way and I was a bit worried about chancing my health with going upstairs.
I wanted to do a video of this place, but I did later see someone outside near the cars and I didn't want to draw any attention for risk of a visit from the police. Plus I didn't have my Rode VideoMic Pro on my person.
Architecture looked typical British, as is a the case with a lot of buildings in Shimla given it's history. Was a fireplace downstairs and those other chimneys suggest more or a heating system of some sort.
Didn't really have a good look at certain items in the house as I was keen to take my photos and go. But those photos suggested someone employed by the army may of lived there, and there was some Hindu ornaments on a shelf too.
Feedback welcome, enjoy the video (of still images, hah).

rajbhawan shimla. famous Shimla Agreement between India and Pakistan 3rd July,1972
RAJ BHAWAN
Renowned as the Barnes' Court
In 1971, the Raj Bhawan got fire and Peteroff served as its office
After the building was damaged in a fire, the Raj Bhawan was shifted to the Barnes Court building
Originally named after Edward Barnes, the commander-in-chief of British India.
It is a neo-Tudor timber-framed building.
Edward Barnes has spent Rs.14,500 in 1828 to purchase the land of Raj Bhawan
From 1996, it has been working as Raj Bhawan of Punjab
The permission to construct earliest portion of the estate, measuring 200 square yards, was granted by Captain C.J. Kennedy, Principal Assistant to the Political Agent at Delhi to Dr. J. Ludlow on the 1st January, 1830, subject to a ground tax of Rs.40/- per annum.
The Punjab Government on 11th April,1878, asked for permission to purchase “Barnes Court”, as an official residence for the Lieutenant- Governor, Sir Robert Egerton, who first went regularly into residence at Barnes Court in 1879.
Earlier it was a single storey structure with slate roofing on the top. The new structure was built during 1879-1886 at a cost of Rs. 3,02,257/- only.
The ball room is charmingly decorated and painted in eastern ‘ Moorish’ style, this work having been supervised by Mr. Lockwood Kipling, for many years, the Principal of the Mayo School of Art, Lahore.
Lady Ibbeston, Lady Dane and Lady O’ Dwyer assisted by their daughters, in years gone by, were all popular hostesses at Barnes Court and Lady Maclagan also worthily upheld the traditions of the house.
After reorganization, when Simla was allotted to Himachal Pradesh, it was converted into a State Guest.
In the late seventies, it was converted into a State Guest House-cum-Tourist Bungalow for some time.
The Summit Hall at ground floor named as ‘Kirtikaksh’ has historic significance as the famous Simla Agreement between India and Pakistan was signed here on 3rd July,1972 by the then Prime Ministers of India and Pakistan.
The Darbar Hall at ground floor, earlier used as dancing hall, is now used for oath taking ceremonies of the Governor/Chief Minister/Chief Justice & Judges of the High Court/Chairmen/Members of various boards/Corpns.

Shimla is the capital of the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, in the Himalayan foothills. Once the summer capital of British India, it remains the terminus of the narrow-gauge Kalka-Shimla Railway, completed in 1903. It’s also known for the handicraft shops that line The Mall, a pedestrian avenue, as well as the Lakkar Bazaar, a market specializing in wooden toys and crafts.

Shimla Heritage Museum, Shimla, Himachal Pradesh
For all the art lovers and history buffs, this museum is a must visit place to know about the history and culture of Shimla during the pre-independence period. After the independence, the Britishers left behind many stunning paintings and pictures that give a very good insight of Shimla during the 18th century. Many buildings such as the Central Hotel, Barnes Court, Oakover, Gaiety Theatre, Nabha Estate and Vidhan Sabha that have been shown in the paintings are now an integral part of Shimla's heritage.
