Whale watching by Rottnest Fast Ferries
Here’s a short clip to my whale watching in Perth. I booked the cruise from Rottnest Fast Ferries and it left from Hillary’s Boat Harbour. I chose the cruise based on the location and duration, I didn’t want to sail around for 4 hours.
We found the whales really fast and then just spotted different pods around the boat. The weather was just perfect, sunny but not too hot. We were close to the Scarborough beach for almost 1,5h and our tour guide was great, I can highly recommend this service.

Rottnest Express - Fremantle to Rottnest Island
The Manly Ferry crossing has nothing on this 25-minute journey. Boarding the Rottnest Express at the B Shed in Fremantle in Western Australia. Crossing the Indian Ocean was a little more thrilling than anticipated. The captain of the vessel performed his job brilliantly. Swells reaching up to 4.5 metres high, with the boat violently hitting the ocean floor and we reached the island safely.
Thankfully smell-o-vision hasn't been invented yet, otherwise, you would also have the waft of vomit. The boat made a lot of people ill, and many sick bags were handed out on the crossing.
ROTTNEST ISLAND WA EARLY TOURISM AND FERRIES WESTERN AUSTRALIA
HISTORY PERTH WESTERN AUSTRALIA
The island became largely devoted to recreational use from the 1900s, aside from a brief period of exclusive military use during World War II. It is now visited by nearly 500,000 visitors, an average of 330,000 of those arriving by ferry or air taxi per year.[4] 70% of all visitors come for the day only. The majority of visitors come in summer, with nearly 20% of all visitors coming in January. The Island has accommodation for up to 2850 visitors, while day only visitors can number up to 5000.[5]
The Island has been an important holiday destination for over 50 years, making it an iconic location for generations of Perth residents for family holidays, and as a place to celebrate events such as the end of secondary school.
Accommodation options include 308 villas, units and cottages the majority of which sleep 4, 6 or 8 people and which are self-catering. The style of accommodation is basic and is most suitable for catering to young families on a limited budget. Unlike many east coast island destinations, those looking for a superior level of accommodation are not catered for. Demand for accommodation is very high during the summer months, with ballots held annually for accommodation during the January and Easter school holiday periods. Ballots are conducted in order to fairly allocate vacation opportunities without raising prices.
Other options include the YHA and group accommodation at Kingstown Barracks; the Quokka Arms hotel and Rottnest Lodge. [6]
Most visitors arrive on one of the ferries from Fremantle, Perth, and Hillarys. These are operated by Boat Torque/Rottnest Express, Hillarys Fast Ferries and Oceanic Cruises. An airport for light aircraft (YRTI) is located near the main settlement.

Best Places to visit in Australia: ROTTNEST ISLAND 2019
Discover the best attractions and activities Rottnest Island has to offer.
Just 19 km off the coast of Perth City, but an entire world away, lies the sunny holiday island of Rottnest, blessed with a casual atmosphere, picturesque scenery, dazzling marine life and some of the world's finest beaches and pristine bays.
Rottnest Island earned its curious name when in 1696, Dutch explorer, Willem de Vlamingh, mistook the island's unusual marsupial population for common rats and named it Rottnest - literally translating to 'rats’ nest'. Today, having a photo taken alongside the 'rats', known as Quokkas, is one of the main attractions for visitors to the island.
