La Mancha, the land of Don Quixote
La Mancha is the setting for one of the most important works of universal literature, Don Quixote. This region continues to transmit the atmosphere of the legendary novel, both in its villages and landscapes, and also in ancient traditions that live on to this day.

Places to see in ( Castile La Mancha - Spain ) Siguenza Castle
The Castle of Sigüenza (Spanish: Castillo de Sigüenza) is located in Sigüenza in the Province of Guadalajara in central Spain. With foundations dating back to the 5th century, it was extended by the Moors and retaken for the Christians by Bernard of Agen in 1123.
The origins of the fortifications in Sigüenza go back to the Celtiberians who inhabited the right bank of the river in the final centuries B.C. The Visigoths built a small castle in the 5th century above the town. The Moors built a large fortified castle or alcazaba in the early 8th century to defend the area against the Christian kings of Leon and Castile.
It was enclosed by a defensive wall providing an area known as the medina. In 1124, the castle was retaken by Bernard of Agen allowing Simón Girón de Cisneros to build an episcopal palace there. In 1298, the castle was taken by the troops of Alfonso de la Cerda during the battle against Ferdinand IV of Castile, the boy king, but was defended by the bishop's vassals. In the 15th century, the castle was strengthened by the bishops to protect it from attacks from Aragon and Navarre.
In the late 18th century, Bishop Juan Díaz de la Guerra changed the appearance of the castle from a fortress into an episcopal palace with additional windows, balconies and stables. However, in 1808 during the War of Spanish Independence the castle was taken by the French who seriously damaged it and looted all its riches before it was recaptured by El Empecinado. The episcopal palace was further devastated by fire in the 1830s and had to be abandoned.
In 1972, the Ministry of Tourism gave the castle the status of a parador or luxury hotel. Restoration of the building began in 1964 and was completed in 1976 by the architect José Luis Picardo. The official inauguration took place in 1978 with the visit of King King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofía. Decorated with banners and suits of armour, the huge lounge is the castle's original dining room.

Places to see in ( Castile La Mancha - Spain ) Consuegra Castle
Places to see in ( Castile La Mancha - Spain ) Consuegra Castle
Consuegra Castle, locally known as Castillo de Consuegra, lies in the village by the same name in the province of Toledo in Spain.
There already was a great castle at this site during Moorish rule, which played an important role in the civil wars between the califates of Toledo and Cordoba. Somewhere between 1085 and 1090 the castle came into the hands of the Christian king Alfonso VI. Whether he gained it as result of a siege or as part of a dowry isn't known. Later on it was taken back by the Moors only to be conquered again by Alfonso VII in 1147.
In 1183 the castle was ceded to the military order of Knights Hospitaller, by King Alfonso VIII. He considered the castle to be of great importance which is why he granted Consuegra Castle the revenue of a tax on the nearby city of Toledo, for ten years, in order to maintain and improve its defenses. The Moorish castle was so much altered by the Hospital Knights that almost nothing is left of its Moorish origin. The Knights made alterations which improved its military, as well as its residential character. This is why the castle has become a peculiar strength, quite different from other castles in the surrounding area. It served as a headquarters for this military order.
The castle consists of three large, irregular shaped enclosures protected by strong walls and several (semi-)circular towers. The inside is a maze of gates, walkways, stairs and rooms. All built to make entry as difficult as possible for any attackers. Some of the towers have names like the Shieldtower and the Belltower. There are several raintanks in the enclosures of which some were used as prisons in the 16th/17th century. There also was a chapel.
The castle fell to ruin in the 18th/19th century. It is now partially restored and can be visited. This is one of the few castles which wasn't freely accessible when I visited Spain; you have to pay a small entrance fee. But the cost is certainly worth it.
This is a great castle. It is situated on a ridge and can be reached over a dead-end road. But there are spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. The image of this castle is well known as it serves as a beautiful background for the white mills which show up in a lot of travel publications.

Muchas garcias, amigos!

Places to see in ( Castile La Mancha - Spain ) Atienza
tienza is a municipality located in the province of Guadalajara, Spain. According to the 2006 census, the municipality has a population of 437 inhabitants. There were ancient Celtiberian settlements in the Cerro del Padrastro.
Atienza, as well as the area surrounding it, is located in the transition zone between the Sistema Ibérico and the Sistema Central. It is located in the region of the Serranía de Guadalajara , one of the four regions in which the province of Guadalajara is divided , ranking fourth in the number of inhabitants of this region (behind Sigüenza , Jadraque and Cogolludo ).
It had great splendor in the Middle Ages , which is reflected in its urban center. The town rises on the side of a hill, resulting in a network of streets in slope; On the top of the hill stands the silhouette of the old Atienza Castle . The villa thus configured was easily defensible in other eras.
The town center revolves around its two most important squares: the one in Spain (where the Town Hall and the birth house of Juan Bravo are kept) and the one in Trigo or Don Bruno Pascual Ruilópez (with the church of San Juan and the Casa del Cabildo), both beautifully asoportaladas . These two squares are separated by the arch of San Juan or Arrebatacapas.
The most important street in its historic center is Cervantes street (formerly called 'de la Zapatería'), with many vintage houses with coats of arms. It communicates the Plaza del Trigo with the Church of the Holy Trinity and serves as the beginning of the path that climbs to the castle.

* * *

Alicante to Madrid - The Castilla La Mancha Region in our campervan
Apologies for the frankenstein style editing on this video but we had some decent shots of where we had been but with no information so I provided a directors commentary.
We travelled from the coast in Alicante to Madrid to visit the Parque Warner theme park in our motorhome conversion.
There were a lot of castles in the region (as you might expect) and some great scenery.

Alcalá del Júcar is a municipality in Albacete, Castile-La Mancha, Spain. It has a population of 1,442. Alcalá del Júcar, can boast of being in the best tourist guides and be recognized as one of the most beautiful villages in Spain, as well as having the title of Most beautiful town of Castilla-La Mancha the past 2016.
Alcala del Jucar is very probable that you do not have to justify with words the reason for these recognitions, because just by taking a look at any point of the town or having a look at any photograph, we will not find any doubt.
Visiting it is recommended 12 months of the year, but if you like colors, photography and hiking, take advantage of the autumn months to walk through its streets, because Alcalá del Júcar becomes even more desirable to visit.
