GOTHIC QUARTER BARCELONA
The Gothic Quarter is the centre of the old city of Barcelona. It stretches from La Rambla to Via Laietana, and from the Mediterranean seafront to the Ronda de Sant Pere. It is a part of Ciutat Vella district.
The gothic quarter encompasses the oldest parts of the city of Barcelona, and includes the remains of the city's Roman wall and several notable medieval landmarks. Much of the present-day fabric of the quarter, however, dates to the 19th and early 20th centuries. El Call, the medieval Jewish quarter, is located within this area, along with the former Sinagoga Major.
The Barri Gòtic retains a labyrinthine street plan, with many small streets opening out into squares. Most of the quarter is closed to regular traffic although open to service vehicles and taxis.
Authenticity of the Gothic Quarter
Barcelona Cathedral in the 1880s, before neo-Gothic additions to its façade
Despite its name, a number of landmark Gothic buildings in the neighborhood do not date to the Middle Ages. Rather, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the quarter was completely transformed from a sombre neighborhood to a tourist attraction through a massive restoration project, timed to be completed for the 1929 International Exhibition. This allowed the city and the surrounding region of Catalonia to portray itself in a positive light to the world's media.[3] Further restoration of existing buildings and the creation of brand new neo-Gothic structures continued as late as the 1960s.
Among the principal buildings with rebuilt or modified with neo-Gothic additions are:
The façade of the Barcelona Cathedral: constructed between 1882 and 1913 by Josep Oriol Mestres and August Font i Carreras with a profusion of Gothic-style elements.
Building of the Centre Excursionista de Catalunya (English: Hiking Center of Catalonia) on Carrer Paradís: work by Lluís Domènech i Montaner carried out in 1922 on a building of uncertain origins, to which he added Gothic windows, battlements, and merlons.
The Flamboyant-style bridge that crosses Carrer Bisbe between the Palau de la Generalitat and the Cases dels Canonges: newly constructed 1928 by Joan Rubió.
Casa Padellàs: currently the Barcelona City History Museum headquarters, the building was built circa 1500 on Carrer Mercaders, but it was moved to the Plaça del Rei in 1931 with its interior rebuilt.
Aguilar Palace: present-day Museu Picasso (Carrer Montcada ), restored by Adolf Florensa in 1959, who added galleries with arches and Gothic windows.
Pignatelli Palace: present-day Royal Artistic Circle of Barcelona, restored in 1970 including the addition of various Gothic windows retrieved from municipal warehouses.

대성당 앞 광장은 어디에서 왔는지 수십 명의 노인들로 시끌벅적했다. 한쪽에서는 악기를 조립하고 또 한쪽에서는 외투를 벗고 바쁘게 움직이고 있었다. 그리고는 돈을 거두면서 작은 스티커를 붙여주고 있었다. 일종의 참가비를 내는 거라고 했다. 잠시 후 음악과 함께 사람들은 커다란 원을 이루며 춤을 추기 시작했다. 바로 사르다나라는 전통 민속춤이었다. 사르다나는 19세기 카탈루냐의 한 지역에서 시작됐는데 사르다나 음악이 만들어지면서 춤도 같이 생겨났다고 한다. 마치 우리의 강강술래처럼 서로 손을 잡고 느리게 추는데 다소 지루해보였다. 하지만 스페인의 상징인 화려한 플라멩코조차 관광객이 없다면 이곳에서는 보기 힘들다고 했다. 그만큼 사르다나는 카탈루냐 지방의 자긍심이 담긴 춤이였다. “사르다나는 카탈루냐 춤인데 프랑코 독재시대에는 사르다나를 추는 것을 금지했어요. 그 이후 전통춤을 되살리기 위해 이렇게 노력하고 있죠. 하나 둘 셋, 하나 둘 셋으로 스텝을 밟아요. 이 춤을 추면서 우리는 자유를 느낍니다.” 사르다나는 단순한 스텝처럼 누구에게나 열린 춤이었다. 서로의 손을 잡고 점점 더 큰 원을 만들면 되는 것이다. 한 낮의 햇살아래 한데 어우러져 사르다나를 추는 모습은 아름다웠다.

The fountain situated right below the Palau Nacional was designed for the Barcelona International Exhibition in 1929. It was a very ambitious project and at that time, not many people believed in its success. However, the fountain was completed and it worked as it was supposed to with colorful illumination and 2,600 liters of water going through this fountain per second. Since the 1980s, the show is accompanied by music, which is always different. It became a popular attraction especially with tourists, but also with children. Come early to grab some seats before the show starts, you can have a drink or a snack while you wait. The show starts every half an hour, the start and end time differs according to a season.

Spain: Cirque du Soleil unveils Messi10 show in Barcelona

A presentation of the of a brand-new show by Cirque du Soleil and Argentinean football star Leo Messi, called 'Messi10', was held at the Parc del Forum venue in Barcelona on Tuesday.
Cirque du Soleil executive producer Charles Joron, stage director Mukhtar O.S. Mukhtar and artistic director Sean McKeown were among those at the presentation.
Cirque du Soleil's creative team announced that the show will allocate four tents of a total of 12,000 square meters, reproducing the surroundings of a football stadium, and will allow audiences to talk in a virtual way with the player.
The infrastructure that we'll be using is not a traditional big dock like we do in our regular touring shows but will be a specific venue that looks more like a sports venue than a circus tent, Joron said.
We were obviously very surprised with this idea, but at the same time, we must say honoured and humbled to have Leo think about doing something with Cirque de Soleil, he added.
The first show will be held on October 10 of this year at the same location and will involve 46 artists. There will reportedly be 32 sessions in Catalonia and then there will be a world tour in other countries.
According to the official web site of the event, the public will be able to witness the story of a young man born with great ambition and capable of overcoming any obstacle and also wants to become the best number 10 in the world.
