Royal Flying Doctor Service

The iconic Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) takes the finest care to Australia's furthest corners so that anyone who lives, works or travels in remote and rural Australia can enjoy the best of health.
Using the latest in aviation, medical and communications technology a dedicated team of professionals deliver both 24-hour emergency services and everyday essential health care.
Nationally, the RFDS has a fleet of 61 aircraft operating from 21 bases located across the country and provides medical assistance to over 270,000 people every year -- that's one every two minutes.

The Bruce Langford Visitor Centre, located at the RFDS Broken Hill Base combines a museum, theatre and shop, with interactive displays showing the history of the RFDS, as well as tributes to the doctors, pilots and flight nurses who work for us and the many community groups and benefactors who support us.

The RFDS is a not-for-profit organisation that relies on government funding and donor support to keep its doctors flying. All proceeds from admissions and merchandise sales go towards the purchase of new aircraft and vital medical equipment.

The origins of the Royal Flying Doctor Service

Brian Hernan tells how in 1918 John Clifford Peel passed on to the Rev.Dr.John Flynn, the idea, costings and plan to equip the fledging Australian Inland Mission with aircraft. Clifford Peel died in WW1 but his concept was taken up. People in the vast and remote reaches of Australia needed medical support. This was the beginning of what became the Royal Flying Doctor Service in 1954. As Brian Hernan says: Long may it prosper!
