Aloha Hawaii - Surfing Kihei, Upcountry Maui Ohana, Overlanding at Kanaio, Ep. 5
We finished our road trip across the United States, and spent the month of November and Thanksgiving with Jenny’s family in Georgia. In December we traveled to Cleveland to visit Adams family for Christmas and the holidays. On New Years Eve we flew to Hawaii, where we plan on spending the next few months.
Things we did and tried to accomplish in Hawaii:
- Learn how to surf
- Hike Haleakala from summit to sea level
- Learn how to play beach volleyball
- Spent time with family in upcountry Maui
- Learn how to cook Filipino / Hawaiian food
- go spearfishing and cook a fish
- Visit and hike in Oahu
- Learn how to shoot a bow and arrow
- Go overlanding and camp in Kanaio
Before we leave to travel to Asia we plan on visiting the Big Island of Hawaii and hiking the Kalalau Trail on Kauai.

Blue Hawaiian Helicopters - Maui, Kihei & Wailea Beaches
Blue Hawaiian Helicopters
Check out Maui's South Shore and take in aerial views of the many beaches and resorts in the Kihei and Wailea area.
THE BLUE HAWAIIAN DIFFERENCE There's simply no argument: Blue Hawaiian is Hawaii's #1 helicopter tour company. Blue Hawaiian's aircraft maintenance technicians have received the FAA's coveted Certificate of Excellence, Diamond Award every year since 1998. No other helicopter tour company in Hawaii has ever received this critical recognition. Blue Hawaiian was honored by the FAA for its record 12th straight year in January, 2009, at a ceremony in Honolulu, and the FAA further honored Blue Hawaiian with the very first Certificate of Excellence, Platinum Award. And Blue Hawaiian is the only helicopter tour company in Hawaii certified by the Department of Defense.
Welcome to the Blue Skies of Hawaii. Blue is the only helicopter tour company serving all four major Hawaiian islands: Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island. That means wherever you go in the Islands of Aloha, you know exactly how to get the world's finest aerial tours: just remember the color of the sky.
We don't just operate the best equipment, we help develop it. From the ultra-quiet, spacious, and powerful 21st-century Eco-Star helicopter to the breakthrough Garmin G500H technology, which gives our pilots astonishing three-dimensional synthetic vision terrain awareness in less than optimal weather; from our pioneering of multi-camera in-flight video, to designing vastly improved cockpit air-conditioning—Blue Hawaiian is always at the forefront of leading-edge innovations for your safety, comfort, and enjoyment. Because when it comes to our guests, good enough is never enough.
The finest pilots in the sky. Blue Hawaiian prides itself on hand-picking only the finest and most experienced pilots—the absolute cream of the profession—and every one of them is a State of Hawaii Certified Tour Guide. Blue Hawaiian is also the only helicopter tour company in Hawaii with its own state-of-the-art Flight Simulator, and the only one that puts its pilots through annual factory and FAA recurrent training.
Maui surf lesson 2018: First time family from Texas

Here is my first gopro video of our beginner group surf lesson. You will see a family from Texas a dad and two sons. Kevin is our surf instructor. We check in on the ipad then we get everyone suited up with the water shoes and rashguards. We then take a short walk through the Historic town of Lahaina to our surf truck and grab our surfboards. We spend 10-15 minutes on the sand going over surfing techniques and safety. The boys did not get up at first but found their balance eventually. We later found out that dad had surgery on his back and tweaked it on the way out. I recommend communicating with your surf instructor of any injuries. It was fun meeting this family and surfing with them.

Hurricane Lane
Amfac, Inc. started to develop Kaanapali Beach Resort in the 1960s, on mile-long Kāʻanapali Beach on the western shore of Maui, a couple miles north of the old whaling town of Lahaina. Since that time, many more hotels and condos have been built both on Kāʻanapali Beach and for several miles up and down the coast, and Lahaina has turned into a tourist shopping area.

There are also condominium complexes on Kaanapali Beach. Toward Lahaina between the Marriott and the Westin is the Alii. Moving further north on Kaanapali beach between Whalers Village (shopping center) and the Kaanapli Beach Hotel, is the Whaler. On the north side of Kaanapali Beach (north of Black Rock) there are two new complexes. The Westin Ka'anapali Ocean Resort Villas is a vacation ownership resort, with South Phase opened in September 2003 and North Phase opened in July 2007. The Honua Kai condominium complex is just south of the Aston Mahana condominiums (formerly ResortQuest Hawaii) and Ka'anapali Beach Club.
Airports
The Kapalua-West Maui Airport is a small regional airport that serves West Maui, including Kāʻanapali, Lahaina and Kapalua. The airport has been in service since 1987.[7]
From 1965 to 1986, Kaanapali had its own airport[8] located in the Kaanapali North Beach area, recently developed as The Westin Ka'anapali Ocean Resort Villas and Honu Kai condo complex.

Kaka'ako's Forgotten History
Kaka'ako was once a thriving residential community in central Honolulu. It had three theatres, the open-air Bell Theatre, the Aloha Theatre (where Lex Brodie's is today) and the Kewalo (still standing on Queen and Cooke streets. It was open from 1937-1966.
Kaka'ako's main school was Pohukaina, which began as the Oahu Charity School in 1833 on the grounds of what is today Ali'iolani Hale. California did not have schools until 1846 and some families sent their children to the Oahu Charity School for an education.
Pohukiana School moved to where the Hawaii State Library is, then down to Pohukaina Street in 1911.
Margaret Waldron was a popular teacher at the school and the park next door was named in her honor.
As Kaka'ako shifted to a light industrial area, the school moved to Kahala. At 178 yeas old, it is Oahu's oldest. Lahainaluna on Maui is 2 years older.
The Statue of King Kamehameha stands in front of Aliiiolani Hale today. It has a fascinating story. The original was lost at sea in a shipwreck near the Falkland Islands. It was insured and the Kingdom of Hawaii ordered a duplicate, which stands on King Street today.
The original was recovered, stood in Port Stanley, then sent to Hawaii. Today it stands in Kohala on the Big Island.
The house that gave Mililani its name was on the corner of King and Mililani Street. Mililani means 'to pet or caress royalty and refers to Princess Victoria Kamamalu, who was the adopted daughter of John Papa I'i.
The Ward Estate was a Kaka'ako landmark. Curtis and Victoria Ward had a huge home, fields, pastures and a lake on the property.
Kaka'ako had many stores, poi factories, sake brewers, churches, six schools, rice mills, laundries and a lot more.
Kakaako is under development in 2014 by Kamehameha Schools/Bishop Estate. Many condominiums are being built. It's prime real estate near downtown Honolulu and Kakaako Waterfront park. There are many shops and restaurants nearby
