EAT #07 - The Royal Observatory Edinburgh
Check out our website at
In episode EAT07 of KPO's European Astronomy Tour, we’ll be visiting the Royal Observatory Edinburgh, here on Blackford Hill in the old city of Edinburgh, Scotland. This observatory was built and established in April 1896, when two telescopes were moved from other locations and installed in the new observatory. The first was a 15-inch refractor, placed in the East Dome, and a 24-inch reflector established in the West Dome. In addition to those scopes, an 8.5-inch transit circle was housed in a separate building further west.
In this episode we have two exciting interviews. The first is with Dr. William Taylor, who specializes in massive stars, and the second is a special discussion with Dr. Andy Lawrence, who is the Regius Professor of Astronomy at the University of Edinburgh / Institute for Astronomy. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE) and Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society (FRAS). His is a past director of the Institute for Astronomy.

Edinburgh, Scotland - Travel Around The World | Top best places to visit in Edinburgh
Top best places to visit in Edinburgh, Scotland
Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland, lies in the northern part of the United Kingdom.
Home to the Scottish Parliament and Scotland seat of the monarchy, Edinburgh holds the nickname “Athens of the North”, due to its many neoclassical buildings and its reputation for learning.
One of the best attractions in the city is a magnificent royal fortress, located on one of the highest points of the city, Edinburgh Castle.
The castle has continuously been in use for a 1000 years and despite its many concerts on the castle esplanade it is in excellent condition.
Running downhill, between Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Palace, the Royal Mile is the busiest tourist street in the Old Town with its many shops, restaurants, pubs and visitor attractions.
Along this street, on Parliament Square, stands the principal place of worship, St Giles’ Cathedral.
Around the cathedral are historic buildings such as Mary King’s Close, the City Chambers, the Old Parliament House and the Supreme Courts.
In the Old Town are also the National Library of Scotland and, a little bit further, the National Museum of Scotland.
This district has many colorful, lively and unique streets that are worth a walk, like Victoria Street
or the Grassmarket Area.
On the other side of the Royal Mile is the New Town, home to the Scottish National Gallery,
And next to it, the Royal Scottish Academy.
Further along is the Scott Monument, a huge intricate Gothic monument dedicated to Sir Walter Scott.
It is possible to climb 200 ft above the city center to enjoy its fantastic views.
Another good place to see the city from high up is Calton Hill.
Besides great views there are also various landmarks including the City Observatory, the Nelson Monument and the National Monument of Scotland.
On the steep slope of the hill is the headquarters of the Scottish Government and the New Parliament Building.
Nearby, at the end of the Royal Mile, is the Palace of Holyroodhouse, a royal residence and the Queen’s Gallery.
From there you can climb to Holyrood Park and enjoy nature... and the city.

Places to see in ( Edinburgh - UK ) Camera Obscura and World of Illusions
Places to see in ( Edinburgh - UK ) Camera Obscura and World of Illusions
Camera Obscura and World of Illusions is a major tourist attraction in the Old Town, Edinburgh, Scotland. Founded by entrepreneur Maria Theresa Short in 1835 and a key site in Patrick Geddes development of regional planning, it is located on the Castlehill section of the Royal Mile next to Edinburgh Castle.
In the early 18th century, the Edinburgh instrument maker Thomas Short leased some land on Calton Hill to display his instruments to the public. As his lease stipulated female relatives of Thomas could not inherit the building and its contents, his wife and children did not inherit it when he died in 1788. In 1827, Maria Theresa Short returned to Edinburgh from the West Indies claiming to be Thomas Short’s daughter and attempted to claim his ‘Great Telescope’ for her inheritance. Despite strong competition from other parties, she received the telescope and set up ‘Short's Popular Observatory’ in 1835, housed in a wooden and stone building next to the National Monument on Calton Hill. She exhibited many scientific instruments and kept her Observatory open till 9pm each evening.″
After this very popular observatory was pulled down by authorities against her protests in 1851, she moved to Castlehill. In 1852, she bought the Laird of Cockpen’s townhouse, adding two storeys to create Short's Observatory, Museum of Science and Art, in existence from 1853 to 1892. The tenement is thought to be the original mansion of the Ramsays of Dalhousie (the Lairds of Cockpen), turned into small flats in the 18th century. The main attraction in Short's Observatory was the camera obscura occupying the topmost room. Her husband continued to run the attraction after Mrs. Short died in 1869.
In 1892, Patrick Geddes, a pioneering Scottish urban planner, sociologist, and ecologist, assumed management of the site, renamed it the Outlook Tower, and organized it as a museum and urban study center demonstrating his philosophy of planning, which was based on comprehensive surveys of the site, city, and region. He installed a series of exhibits on progressively broader geographic themes as one ascended the tower — first the world on the ground floor, then Europe, the English-speaking countries, Scotland, and Edinburgh — with the camera obscura itself continuing to project a real-time image of the city at the very top.[2] People from all walks of life were invited to come to the tower to study and learn about their city.
The museum closed after Geddes' death in 1932. It was purchased by Edinburgh University in 1966 as the home for a proposed Patrick Geddes Center and archive, but the project was greatly scaled back after the university closed its regional planning department. In 1982, the building was sold to a private owner, though a one-room Geddes exhibit remained on the fourth floor.
The tower, with its six floors of interactive exhibitions, is still open to the public, making it the oldest purpose built attraction in the city, and one of the oldest in the United Kingdom. Nowadays there are passing references to Maria Short and Patrick Geddes in the presentation on the top floor where the Camera Obscura is still in use to project a virtual tour of the city for visitors, and also on the rooftop terrace with its views of Edinburgh and telescopes. The floors beneath the Camera Obscura hold the World of Illusions, which offers interactive exhibits demonstrating aspects of optical illusions, light, colour. There are also puzzles, a mirror maze, and a vortex tunnel. Although the project is primarily a tourist attraction, it also serves as a learning centre about optical illusions, holograms, the origins of photography and about Edinburgh itself.
( Edinburgh - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Edinburgh . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Edinburgh - UK

EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND | Top 5 Things To Do
These are my top five things to do in Edinburgh, Scotland! Obviously there is more than five things to do (including Holyrood Palace and the Scottish Parliament Building, which are both great) but these are my personal favourites. Enjoy!
1) Arthurs Seat - Situated on top of the remains of an extinct volcano, known as the castle rock, Edinburgh castle is one of Scotland's most iconic sites. The castle has been under siege on 26 occasions and researchers claim it is the most besieged place in Great Britain and one of the most attacked in the world.
2) The Royal Mile - Stretching one Scots mile, roughly 1.8km, between Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood palace, the royal mile is the busiest street in Edinburgh. Along the mile, you can visit St Giles, a 14th century cathedral which acts as the principal place of worship for the Church of Scotland in Edinburgh, and is refereed to as the Mother Church of Presbyterianism.
3)Visible for miles around Edinburgh, Arthur's seat rises 822 feet above Edinburgh, and provides excellent panoramic views of the city. Its name comes from the mythology surrounding it, as it is often mentioned as one of the possible locations of Camelot, the legendary castle of King Arthur. The crags, which are found right next to Arthurs seat, provide the best views of the hill itself.
4) Found at the east end of princes street, Calton hill is part of Edinburgh's UNESCO world heritage site. The hill itself is home to a number of iconic buildings, such as the city observatory and national monument, which was based on the pantheon in Athens, and gave rise to one of Edinburgh's nicknames, the athens of the north. My favourite thing about Calton Hill, however, is the view over the centre of Edinburgh, where you can see St Giles cathedral, Scott monument, the castle, north bridge, the Balmoral hotel, the Dugald Stewart monument, and the Pentland hills all the way in the background.
5) Scott Monument - Affectionately referred to as the Gothic Rocket by Edinburgh residents, the Scott monument was built as a memorial to Scottish author Sir Walter Scott. It is possible to climb up for a fee of around £4, and the highest platform is 287 steps up.
EAT #05 - The Royal Observatory Greenwich
Check out our website at
In episode EAT05 of KPO's European Astronomy Tour, we trek to the heart of Jolly Olde England, where we visit the Royal Observatory at Greenwich. This is one of the most exciting episodes of KPO’s European Astronomy Tour, where we interview the curator of the museum and learn about the history of the RGO.
The RGO is the birthplace of modern timekeeping standards, and it's situated right on the prime meridian longitude line of the earth. The term Greenwich Mean Time or “GMT” was established here and provides the basis of all time zones around the globe.
Exploring Edinburgh - Duddingston Loch
Duddingston Loch is in Holyrood Park, Edinburgh. Located in the shadows of the towering hills of Arthur's Seat in the Duddingston Village area of the city, it has always been popular wih skaters and for the past few centuries it played a major role in the Scottish sport of curling, stretching back to at least the 1700's.
Nowadays skaters and people who want to play curling have had to find new locations as it just doesn't get cold enough for the loch to freeze over anymore.
The area has been used for a very long time and weapons dating from the Bronze Age have been dredged from the loch in the past, which would make the roughly 3-4000 years old.
Now, Duddngston Loch is mainly a bird santuary.

Places to see in ( Edinburgh - UK ) Calton Hill
Places to see in ( Edinburgh - UK ) Calton Hill
Calton Hill ( the Calton Hill ), is a hill in central Edinburgh, Scotland, situated beyond the east end of Princes Street and included in the city's UNESCO World Heritage Site. Views of, and from, the Calton Hill are often used in photographs and paintings of the city.
Calton Hill is the headquarters of the Scottish Government, which is based at St Andrew's House, on the steep southern slope of the hill; with the Scottish Parliament Building, and other notable buildings, for example Holyrood Palace, lying near the foot of the hill. The hill is also the location of several iconic monuments and buildings: the National Monument, the Nelson Monument, the Dugald Stewart Monument, the old Royal High School, the Robert Burns Monument, the Political Martyrs' Monument and the City Observatory.
By his charter of 1456, James II granted the community of Edinburgh the valley and the low ground between Calton Hill and Greenside for performing tournaments, sports and other warlike deeds. The village of Calton was situated at the bottom of the ravine at the western end of Calton Hill (hence its earlier name of Craigend), on the road from Leith Wynd in Edinburgh and North Back of Canongate to Leith Walk and also to Broughton and thence the Western Road to Leith. In the village, the street was variously known as St. Ninian's Row or Low Calton. Many of the old buildings here were demolished at the time of the Waterloo Place and Regent Bridge development, which bridged the ravine, from 1816. The remaining old village houses of the Low Calton were removed in the 1970s.
Calton was in South Leith Parish and Calton people went to church in Leith. The churchyard there was inconveniently situated for burials from Calton and, in 1718, the Society bought a half acre of land at a cost of £1013 from Lord Balmerino for use as a burial ground. This became known as Old Calton Burial Ground. Permission was granted for an access road, originally known as High Calton and now the street called Calton Hill, up the steep hill from the village to the burial ground. The group of 1760s houses near the top of this street are all that remain of the old village.
Calton Hill is the venue for a number of events throughout the year. The largest of these is the Beltane Fire Festival held on 30 April each year, attended by over 12,000 people. The Dussehra Hindu Festival also takes place on Calton Hill near the beginning of October each year.
