UK: ROYAL YACHT BRITANNIA RECEIVES LAST VISIT FROM ROYAL FAMILY

Her Majesty's Yacht Britannia received a last visit from the British royal family on Thursday, before it is formally retired from service.
An emotional thanksgiving service attended by Queen Elizabeth II and other royal family members took place alongside the Royal Yacht, which is moored in Portsmouth's Royal Naval base.

Members of the British royal family boarded the yacht, for a long last look at the rooms where they received foreign dignitaries around the world, and spent honeymoons and holidays for 44 years.
The royal party included the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince of Wales, Duke of York, Princess Royal and Captain Timothy Laurence, Prince Edward, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, the Duke of Kent, Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, and Princess Alexandra and Sir Angus Ogilvy.
Queen Elizabeth II was the last to disembark, flanked by her husband the Duke of Edinburgh.
A thanksgiving service followed, praising Britannia and all those who worked on her.

We are gathered together in this ancient naval dockyard of Portsmouth this afternoon to worship almighty god and to commemorate the paying off of the royal yacht Britannia, after more than 43 years of distinguished service to Her Majesty the Queen.

More than 250 officers and seamen were lined up on Britannia's gleaming decks for the occasion.
Next week the yacht will be towed by tugs from her present to the nearby Number 3 Basin at the base.
There, after December 19th, a complement of half the yacht's company will work on board to prepare her for retirement - either on Manchester Ship Canal or in Leith, Edinburgh.
Her engines will never be fired up again - they were shut down for the last time on November 22nd.
The royal apartments on board will be sealed and kept at a constant temperature, ensuring security as well as preventing deterioration.
Buckingham Palace said final decisions had yet to be taken over royal items on board.
Although the daily cleaning regime of Britannia will no longer take place, she will be kept ship shape by a small crew.
And her future owners will have to convince the British government that they can maintain her dignity.

Her Majesty's Royal Yacht Britannia
Her Majesty's Yacht Britannia is the former royal yacht of the British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, in service from 1954 to 1997. She was the 83rd such vessel since the restoration of King Charles II in 1660. She is the second royal yacht to bear the name, the first being the famous racing cutter built for The Prince of Wales in 1893. She is now a five-star visitor attraction and evening events venue permanently berthed at Ocean Terminal, Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland. In 2014, The Royal Yacht Britannia was named the UK's no. 1 landmark by TripAdvisor.
There was some controversy over the siting of the ship, with some arguing that she would be better moored on the Clyde, where she was built, than in Edinburgh, with which the yacht had few links. However, her positioning in Leith coincided with a redevelopment of the harbour area, and the advent of Scottish devolution.
The Queen was reported to have wept at the decommissioning ceremony, which she attended along with most of the senior members of the Royal Family.
Listed as part of the National Historic Fleet, Britannia is now permanently moored as a five-star visitor attraction in the historic Port of Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland, and is cared for by the Royal Yacht Britannia Trust, a registered Scottish charity.
Entrance to the yacht is via the Ocean Terminal development, and over 300,000 people visit the Royal Yacht Britannia every year. She is also one of the UK's top evening events venues. On 18 May 2006, the Swiss-born Hollywood actress and first Bond girl, Ursula Andress, celebrated her 70th birthday on board the Royal Yacht. On 29 July 2011, a drinks reception was held on board Britannia for Queen Elizabeth's granddaughter Zara Phillips and her husband Mike Tindall to celebrate their upcoming wedding.
A retired Rolls-Royce Phantom V state car, owned by the royal family in the 1960s, is on display in the purpose-built garage aboard Britannia. Other highlights of the tour of the five decks that are open to the public include the Queen's Bedroom, the only bedroom of a living monarchy which can be viewed (behind a glass wall), and the State Dining and Drawing Rooms, which hosted grand receptions for kings and queens, presidents and prime ministers throughout the world. The Royal Deck Tea Room was added in 2009.
The 1936 racing yacht Bloodhound, once owned by the Queen, is now berthed alongside Britannia. Bloodhound was one of the most successful ocean-racing yachts ever built and was also the yacht on which both the Prince of Wales and Princess Royal learned to sail. The Royal Yacht Britannia Trust bought Bloodhound in early 2010 and she is the centrepiece of an exhibition focusing on the Royal Family's passion for sailing. Visitors can view Bloodhound from a specially built pontoon when the racing yacht is in port. During the summer, July and August, she is berthed in Oban Marina and is available for private charter, as she sails around the islands, once visited by the royal family during their annual two-week holiday in the Western Isles of Scotland. During this period, Royal Yachtsmen (Yotties) from Britannia's original crew sail the yacht for the Britannia Trust.

Edinburgh's other very popular historical site is a short bus ride out into the suburbs to arriving at the Britannia, the Royal yacht of Queen Elizabeth.
You are of course welcome to come aboard. You pay your admission fee.
And it's like the queen just stepped out for a moment. The furnishings are just the way she left them. The yacht is now retired, no longer in active duty, but it went around the world many times in the service of the royalty.
It’s docked at a modern shopping mall, so you can browse around, at 13:28 Maybe get a bite, spend some money, stroll through nearby Leith, which is a beautiful waterfront community. at 14:02 You will enjoy harbor reflections and perhaps stop at a local pub, and then get back on the public bus for the fifteen-minute return ride to town.
