The Ruhr Museum, formerly the Ruhrland Museum, is a diverse natural history and cultural history museum for the Ruhrgebiet in Essen, Germany. The sponsor is the Stiftung Ruhr Museum. Director since 2012 is the historian Heinrich Theodor Grütter. The museum, which understands itself as a memory and showcase of the Ruhr area, documents in its permanent exhibition nature, culture and history of the Ruhr area and thus the development of the largest agglomeration in Europe.
The new permanent exhibition in the Kohlenwäsche (Coal wash) of the Zeche Zollverein colliery (A 14, shaft XII) was designed by the Stuttgart office of HG Merz and is divided into four levels. On the 24-meter level, which is accessed by the large external escalator - the largest in Germany -, there is a cash and information desk, a café, and the museum shop. On the 17 meter level, myths, phenomena and structures of the present Ruhr area are presented. The 12-meter level represents the region's pre-industrial memory and also includes the museum's collections on archeology, ethnology and natural history. On the 6 meter level the history of the Ruhr area in the industrial age is represented. Thus the museum is not only an industry museum, but presents a trias of nature, culture and history.
The former Ruhrlandmuseum was closed in April 2007 to make way for the new buildings of the Museum Folkwang. The new Ruhr Museum opened its doors on 20 October 2008 in the coal mine of the World Cultural Heritage Zeche Zollverein, which was rebuilt to plans by Rem Koolhaas, with a presentation of the Essen Cathedral Treasury.

The Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex (German Zeche Zollverein) is a large former industrial site in the city of Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It has been inscribed into the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites since December 14, 2001, and is one of the anchor points of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.

The former coal mine Zeche Zollverein in Essen, an area of 100 hectares, was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2001. OMA was commissioned to develop a masterplan with the goal of finding a contemporary use for the site. The combined program of 12,000 m2 for the visitors centre, the Ruhrmuseum and the Metaform will be accommodated in the site's most impressive building: the Kohlenwäsche, a former factory for sorting coals. The new program will be added without removing the existing machines that dominate the building. The result is an industrial monument that combines modern use with historic context.

Das Ruhr Museum, vormals Ruhrlandmuseum, ist ein von seinen Beständen und Abteilungen her breit gefächertes natur- und kulturhistorisches Museum für das Ruhrgebiet in Essen. Träger ist die Stiftung Ruhr Museum. Direktor ist seit 2012 der Historiker Heinrich Theodor Grütter.
Das Museum, das sich als Gedächtnis und Schaufenster des Ruhrgebiets versteht, dokumentiert in seiner Dauerausstellung Natur, Kultur und Geschichte des Ruhrgebiets und damit die Entwicklung des größten Ballungsraums Europas.
Die neue Dauerausstellung in der Kohlenwäsche der Zeche Zollverein (A 14, Schacht XII) wurde von dem Stuttgarter Büro HG Merz gestaltet und ist in vier Ebenen gegliedert. Auf der 24-Meter-Ebene, zu der man mit der großen Außenrolltreppe gelangt, befinden sich Kasse und Information, ein Café, sowie der Museumsshop. Auf der 17-Meter-Ebene werden Mythen, Phänomene und Strukturen des gegenwärtigen Ruhrgebiets dargestellt. Die 12-Meter-Ebene stellt das vorindustrielle Gedächtnis der Region dar und beinhaltet auch die Sammlungen des Museums zu Archäologie, Ethnologie und Naturkunde. Auf der 6-Meter-Ebene wird die Geschichte des Ruhrgebiets im Industriellen Zeitalter dargestellt.
Auf der 12-Meter-Ebene befindet sich eine Fläche für Wechselausstellungen. Ebenso in einer Galerie 21 in einem Zwischengeschoss.
Das ehemalige Ruhrlandmuseum wurde im April 2007 geschlossen, um dann den Neubauten des Museums Folkwang Platz zu machen. Das neue Ruhr Museum nahm am 20. Oktober 2008 in der Kohlenwäsche des Weltkulturerbes Zeche Zollverein, das nach Plänen von Rem Koolhaas umgebaut wurde, mit einer Präsentation des Essener Domschatzes seinen Betrieb auf.
Am 9. Januar 2010 wurde das Ruhr Museum im Weltkulturerbe Zollverein in Anwesenheit des Bundespräsidenten Horst Köhler zusammen mit der Kulturhauptstadt RUHR.2010 feierlich eröffnet.

The Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex is a large former industrial site in the city of Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It has been inscribed into the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites since December 14, 2001, and is one of the anchor points of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.
The first coal mine on the premises was founded in 1847, and mining activities took place from 1851 until December 23, 1986. For decades, starting in the late 1950s, the two parts of the site, Zollverein Coal Mine and Zollverein Coking Plant (erected 1957−1961, closed on June 30, 1993), ranked among the largest of their kinds in Europe. Shaft 12, built in the New Objectivity style, was opened in 1932 and is considered an architectural and technical masterpiece, earning it a reputation as the “most beautiful coal mine in the world”.
Zollverein Coal Mine was founded by Duisburg-born industrialist Franz Haniel (1779–1868), who needed coke for steel production. Test drilling in the Katernberg region (nowadays a suburb of Essen) had revealed a very rich seam of coal, which was then named after the German Customs Union (Zollverein), established in 1834. In 1847, Haniel founded the bergrechtliche Gewerkschaft Zollverein (a special kind of Prussian corporation for the exploitation of natural resources) and distributed the shares of the new company amongst the members of his family and the owner of the land on which the future mine would be constructed.
In 1920, the Haniel family, who had been the owners of Zollverein until then, started cooperating with Phönix AG, a mining company that subsequently took over the management of the site. Under Phönix's management, several of the shafts were again modernized, and an eleventh shaft was opened until 1927. When Phönix merged into Vereinigte Stahlwerke in 1926, Zollverein came under control of Gelsenkirchener Bergwerks-AG (GBAG) who started closing most of the now elderly coking plants.
As with most sites of the heavy industries that had been closed down, Zollverein was predicted to face a period of decay. Surprisingly, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) bought the coal mine territory from the RAG immediately after it had been closed down in late 1986, and declared Shaft 12 a heritage site. This went along with the obligation to preserve the site in its original state and to minimize the effects of weathering. In 1989, the city of Essen and NRW founded the Bauhütte Zollverein Schacht XII that should take care for the site and which was replaced by the Stiftung Zollverein (Zollverein Foundation) in 1998.
The Ruhr Museum in the former Coal Washery, located on the UNESCO World Heritages Site Zollverein, is the regional museum of the Ruhr Area. In its permanent exhibition the Ruhr Museum presents, with over 6,000 exhibits, the fascinating history of one of the largest industrial regions of the world, from the formation of coal 300 million years ago to the current structural change towards the Ruhr Metropolis. The Ruhr Museum has extensive collections on the geology, archaeology, industrial and social history as well as photography of the Ruhr Area. In addition to its permanent exhibition, the Ruhr Museum regularly shows special exhibitions and offers a diverse programme with workshops, guided tours, excursions, lectures, movie nights, audio guides and the museum bag for families.
