1956 U.S. SERVICEMANS GUIDE TO JAPAN YOU IN JAPAN TOKYO OSAKA YOKOHAMA 70364
You in Japan is a short 1956 military film (AFIF 78) that serves as a brief orientation to Japan for U.S. servicemen stationed there. The film begins with a shot of a U.S. ship at sea, with the crew on deck, about to arrive in Japan. Troops sit on the deck of the ship for a short orientation on Japan before arriving at port. Units of the Japanese Defense Force march during training under the U.S. military (01:50). The film shows the port of Yokohama (03:45), and then several U.S. servicemen as they get in a convertible and drive along the coast from Yokohama. The film takes viewers on a tour of the country, and it shows the main street of the town of Odawara, a young Japanese boy practicing his calligraphy (04:57), Japanese men working on a small farm plot (05:46), and the Great Buddha of Kamakura (06:23). The film shows a Shinto shrine (07:06), a Japanese fishing village where men haul in fish from their boats, a fish market, and the U.S. servicemen trying sushi in a traditional Japanese setting. The servicemen get a tour of a hotel garden (09:10), stop at Ten Province Pass with its view of Mount Fuji (10:05), and visit Kyoto (10:30) with its many shrines and gardens. Next, the film shows viewers Japanese people performing an ancient dance (10:55), followed by shots of the industrial city of Osaka. Cranes move cargo at Osaka’s harbor. Pro-Communist Japanese participate in a political demonstration (12:00). The next stop is Hiroshima and the ruins of Genbaku Dome (12:30). The film then shows footage of modern trains, traditional dancing, traditional horseback archery competitions, a sumo wrestling match, and a festival’s parade. A woman performs the Japanese tea ceremony (14:45). Next, the film follows the servicemen to Tokyo. People walk along the crowded streets. A Japanese production manager sits in his office at the factory, then he goes home where he wears more traditional clothes. The film wraps up the orientation tour of Japan with visits to the Emperor’s Palace (16:33) and shopping at the Ginza market, which is then lit up by lights at night.
