Somapura Mahavihara in Paharpur, Badalgachhi Upazila, Naogaon District, Bangladesh is among the best known Buddhist viharas in the Indian Subcontinent and is one of the most important archaeological sites in the country.
The village is connected with the nearby Railway station Jamalganj, the district town Naogaon and Jaipurhat town by metalled roads. It is in the midst of alluvial flat plain of northern Bangladesh. In contrast to the monotonous level of the plain, stands the ruins of the lofty (about 24m high from the surrounding level) ancient temple which was covered with jungle, locally called Pahar or hill from which the palace got the name of Paharpur.
The site was first noticed by Buchanon Hamilton in course of his survey in Eastern India .Westmacott next visited it. Sir Alexander Cunningham visited the place.Cunningham intended to carry out an extensive excavation in the mound. But he was prevented by zamindar of Balihar, the owner of the land. So he had to be satisfied with limited excavation in a small part of the monastic area and top of the central mound.There was extensive salting or efflorescence all over the monument. The attempt made by the Govt. for preservation of the monument was insufficient to cope with the progressively deteriorating situation. So the Govt. of Bangladesh made an appeal to UNESCO in 1973 to safeguard this monument and the Mosque city of Bagerhat as part of World Heritage. Accordingly a Master Plan was prepared in 1983 by an international mission and both the sites were included in the World Cultural Heritage List in 1985. Subsequently a project was initiated in 1987 to implement the recommendations of the Master Plan, which continued in three phases and was completed in 2002. Under this project many issues including preservation of the structural remains of Vihara, drainage problem, construction of a museum and other infrastructures etc, were addressed. In order to arrest those partly solved problems as well as to face some other issues like tourism pressure, heritage management, safeguard the ancient landscape etc. Govt. has recently undertaken another project.

বরেন্দ্র অঞ্চল ঘিরে রয়েছে সবুজের সমারহ। প্রাচীন কালে এই অঞ্চলে বিভিন্ন নদীকে পাশে রেখে গড়ে উঠেছিলো সভ্যতা। তেমনি এক প্রাচীন সভ্যতা পাহাড়পুর বৌদ্ধবিহার। নওগাঁ শহর থেকে ২৫ কিলোমিটার দূরে বদলগাছী ইউনিয়নে পাহাড়পুরের বৌদ্ধবিহার। এর নজরকারা রূপ যে কাউকে মুগ্ধ করবে আর যত কষ্টই হোক যাত্রাপথের সব ক্লান্তি দূর করে দেবে।
পাহাড়পুর বৌদ্ধবিহার বা সোমপুর বিহার বর্তমানে ধ্বংসপ্রাপ্ত একটি প্রাচীন বৌদ্ধ বিহার। পালবংশের দ্বিতীয় রাজা শ্রী ধর্মপাল দেব (৭৮১-৮২১) অষ্টম শতকের শেষের দিকে বা নবম শতকে এই বিহার তৈরি করছিলেন। ১৮৭৯ সালে স্যার আলেকজান্ডার কানিংহাম এই বিশাল কীর্তি আবিষ্কার করেন। ১৯৮৫ সালে ইউনেস্কো এটিকে বিশ্বের ঐতিহ্যবাহী স্থান বা ওয়ার্ল্ড হেরিটেজ সাইটের মর্যাদা দেয়।

Badalgachhi at Paharpur in Naogaon district of the village, paharapurabauddha Bihar is located. It is also known as Bihar somapura. Pala king Dharmapala convent was built in the 7th century. The pre-excavation somapura mahavihara 27415 meters north-south and east-west in the 27370 meter measures the remains of prominent Buddhist monastery have been discovered. This massive deployment has around 177 monks habitable rooms, wide doorways, many stupas, small temples, and ponds. The temple stands in the middle of everything, but it is more than remarkable architecture.
বাংলাদেশের নওগাঁ জেলার বদলগাছী উপজেলায় অন্তর্গত পাহাড়পুর গ্রামে “পাহাড়পুরবৌদ্ধ বিহার” অবস্থিত। এটি সোমপুর বিহার নামেও পরিচিত। বিহারটি পাল রাজা ধর্মপাল ৭ম শতকে নির্মাণ করেছিলেন। পূর্ব যুগের খননের ফলে সোমপুর মহাবিহার নামে উত্তর-দক্ষিণে ২৭৪.১৫ মিটার ও পূর্ব-পশ্চিমে ২৭৩.৭০ মিটার পরিমাপ বিশিষ্ট বৌদ্ধ বিহারের ধ্বংসাবশেষ আবিষ্কৃত হয়েছে। প্রকান্ড এই স্থাপনার চতুর্দিকে রয়েছে- ১৭৭টি বসবাস উপযোগী ভিক্ষু কক্ষ, বিস্তৃত প্রবেশপথ, অসংখ্য স্তূপ, ছোট ছোট মন্দির, ও পুকুর। তবে সব কিছুকে ছাড়িয়ে মাঝখানের যে মন্দিরটি দাঁড়িয়ে রয়েছে তা অত্যন্ত স্থাপত্য-বৈশিষ্ট্যপূর্ণ।

Tourists are going to suffer in the violent phase of the regional road from the Paharpur Buddhist Bihara to Joypurhat in Naogaon. In the last few years, Khanaakhand has become unsuitable for road movement. The number of tourists coming to visit Buddhist monastery Local MPs assured the government that the government will soon accelerate the budget for reforms. The road division of the district also said, the problem will be resolved quickly.
The historic Paharpur Buddhist Vihara of Naogaon is one of the landmarks of the country. Hundreds of visitors to the country and abroad visited the Buddhist monastery every day. But the only road going from the city to the Buddhist monastery has become unsuitable for movement. Because of the great Khanakhand on the road, visitors are falling in extreme woe. Water logging is created in the slightest rain. Accidents are often happening due to delicate conditions of the road.
The local parliament member expressed the hope that the necessary funds will be allocated for the reform of the road.
MP said. Salim Uddin said, For this, the government has an astimat of Tk 700 crore. Hopefully, allow one to one and a half months. It will be done in June-August. '
The Executive Officer of the Roads and Highways Department also promised to improve the road.
Roads and Highways Department Executive Officer Hamidul Haque said, The three roads that came from this LGD are among our paharpur roads. Hopefully the work will start from February. '
The distance from the Paharpur Buddhist Vihar to Joypurhat is 35 kilometers away. Out of this, 25 kilometer is incompatible.

Paharpur can be called the largest Buddhist monastery in the world. This may be compared to the Nalanda Mahabharat in India. It was the most famous Buddhist teaching center for Buddhists for three years. An ancient Buddhist monastery destroyed at present in Paharpur Buddha Bihar or Sompur Bihar or Somapur Mahavihara. Sri Dharmapaldev, the second king of the Pala dynasty build this monastery at the end of the eighth century or in the ninth century. In 1879, Sir Cunningham invented this great work. In 1985 UNESCO gave it the status of the World Heritage Site. Paharpur can be called the world's largest Buddhist temple. It can be compared to the Nalanda monastery of India. It was the Buddhist's most famous religious practice center for 300 years. Buddhists from other countries like China, Tibet, Myanmar (the then Brahmanas), Malaysia, Indonesia etc used to come here to earn religious education and religious knowledge, not just from different places of the subcontinent. In the tenth century AD, Achish Dipankar Shrivanan was the Acharya of Bihar.
Somapura Mahavihara was situated in the middle of the capital of Pundravardhana, Pundranagar (present Mahasthan) and the other city, Karibobarsha (present day Bangarh). Its ruins are located at Paharpur village of Badolgachi upazila of Naogaon district, under the greater Rajshahi of present-day Bangladesh. On the other hand, it is only 5 km west of Jamalganj railway station in Joypurhat district.
It is located in the floodplain plains of north Bengal, in the region of Pleistocene era called Varendra. Due to the presence of iron in the soil, the soil is reddish. Of course, most of the soil is now covered under sediment. It remains as a hill-like structure situated about 30.30 meters above the surrounding plains. The local people called it 'the hill of Gopal Chitra'. Since then it has been named Paharpur, although its name is Sompur Bihar.

A number of monasteries grew up during the Pāla period in ancient Bengal and Magadha. According to Tibetan sources, five great Mahaviharas stood out: Vikramashila, the premier university of the era; Nalanda, past its prime but still illustrious; Somapura Mahavihara; Odantapurā; and Jaggadala. The monasteries formed a network; all of them were under state supervision and there existed a system of co-ordination among them ... it seems from the evidence that the different seats of Buddhist learning that functioned in eastern India under the Pāla were regarded together as forming a network, an interlinked group of institutions, and it was common for great scholars to move easily from position to position among them.
The excavation at Paharpur, and the finding of seals bearing the inscription Shri-Somapure-Shri-Dharmapaladeva-Mahavihariyarya-bhiksu-sangghasya, has identified the Somapura Mahavihara as built by the second Pala king Dharmapala. Tibetan sources, including Tibetan translations of Dharmakayavidhi and Madhyamaka Ratnapradipa, Taranatha's history and Pag-Sam-Jon-Zang, mention that Dharmapala's successor Devapala built it after his conquest of Varendra. The Paharpur pillar inscription bears the mention of 5th regnal year of Devapala's successor Mahendrapala along with the name of Bhiksu Ajayagarbha. Taranatha's Pag Sam Jon Zang records that the monastery was repaired during the reign of Mahipala.
A few metal images have been found. An image of Hara-Gouri, a standing naked Jaina and the bronze figures of Kubera and Ganesha were discovered at Paharpur from pre-Bangladesh period excavations. During post-liberation excavation the torso of a large and important bronze Buddha image was found.

অবস্থান ও আয়তন :
#পুন্ড্রবর্ধনের রাজধানী #পুন্ড্রনগর (বর্তমান #মহাস্থান) এবং অপর শহর কোটিবর্ষ (বর্তমান বানগড়)-এর মাঝামাঝি স্থানে অবস্থিত ছিল সোমপুর মহাবিহার। এর ধ্বংসাবশেষটি বর্তমান বাংলাদেশের বৃহত্তর রাজশাহীর অন্তর্গত #নওগাঁ #জেলার বদলগাছি উপজেলার #পাহাড়পুর গ্রামে অবস্থিত। অপরদিকে #জয়পুরহাট জেলার #জামালগঞ্জ রেলস্টেশন থেকে এর দূরত্ব পশ্চিমদিকে মাত্র ৫ কিলোমিটার। এর ভৌগোলিক অবস্থান ২৫°০´ উত্তর থেকে ২৫°১৫´ উত্তর অক্ষাংশ এবং ৮৮°৫০´ পূর্ব থেকে ৮৯°১০´ পূর্ব দ্রাঘিমাংশ পর্যন্ত। গ্রামের মধ্যে প্রায় ০.১০ বর্গ কিলোমিটার (১০ হেক্টর) অঞ্চল জুড়ে এই পুরাকীর্তিটি অবস্থিত। প্রত্নতাত্ত্বিক এই নিদর্শনটির ভূমি পরিকল্পনা চতুর্ভূজ আকৃতির।[১] এটি বাংলাদেশের উত্তরবঙ্গের প্লাবন সমভূমিতে অবস্থিত, প্লাইস্টোসীন যুগের বরেন্দ্র নামক অনুচ্চ এলাকার অন্তর্ভুক্ত। মাটিতে লৌহজাত পদার্থের উপস্থিতির কারণে মাটি লালচে। অবশ্য বর্তমানে এ মাটি অধিকাংশ স্থানে পললের নিচে ঢাকা পড়েছে। পার্শ্ববর্তী সমতল ভূমি থেকে প্রায় ৩০.৩০ মিটার উঁচুতে অবস্থিত পাহাড়সদৃশ স্থাপনা হিসেবে এটি টিকে রয়েছে। স্থানীয় লোকজন একে গোপাল চিতার পাহাড় আখ্যায়িত করত; সেই থেকেই এর নাম হয়েছে পাহাড়পুর, যদিও এর প্রকৃত নাম সোমপুর বিহার।

সোমপুর মহাবিহার প্রাঙ্গনের দেয়াল ভারতীয় উপমহাদেশে ইংরেজদের আগমনের পর তাঁরা সকল স্থানে জরিপ কাজ চালানো শুরু করেন। পূর্ব ভারতে জরিপ কাজ পরিচালনা করেন বুকানন হ্যামিল্টন; যিনি ১৮০৭ থেকে ১৮১২ খ্রিস্টাব্দের মধ্যে কোনো এক সময়ে পাহাড়পুর পরিদর্শন করেন। এটিই ছিল পাহাড়পুরে প্রথম প্রত্নতাত্ত্বিক পরিদর্শন। এরপর এই প্রত্নস্থল পরিদর্শনে আসেন ওয়েস্টম্যাকট। এঁরা দেশে ফিরে তাঁদের অভিজ্ঞতা সম্বলিত বিবরণ পত্র-পত্রিকায় প্রকাশ করেন। এরই সূত্র ধরে ১৮৭৯ খ্রিস্টাব্দে আলেকজান্ডার কানিংহাম এই ঐতিহাসিক স্থানটি পরিদর্শন করেন। পরিদর্শনের পর এই জমিটি ব্যাপক হারে খনন করার প্রতি তিনি আগ্রহ দেখান। কিন্তু জমির মালিক বলিহারের তদানীন্তন জমিদার তাঁকে এই কাজে বাধা দেন। তাই তিনি বিহার এলাকার সামান্য অংশে এবং পুরাকীর্তির কেন্দ্রীয় ঢিবির শীর্ষভাগের সামান্য অংশে খনন কাজ চালিয়েই অব্যাহতি দেন। এই খননকার্যের সময় কেন্দ্রীয় ঢিবির অংশে চারপাশে উদ্গত অংশবিশিষ্ট একটি বর্গাকার ইমারত আবিষ্কার করেন যার দৈর্ঘ্য ছিল ২২ ফুট।[২] অবশেষে ১৯০৪ খ্রিস্টাব্দের প্রত্নতাত্ত্বিক আইনের আওতায় এই স্থান ১৯১৯ খ্রিস্টাব্দে সংরক্ষিত পুরাকীর্তি হিসাবে ঘোষিত হয়।

৭ম শতাব্দীর মাঝামাঝিতে হিউয়েন ৎসাং #পুন্ড্রবর্ধনে আসেন তবে তার বিস্তারিত বিবরণে সোমপুরের বিহার ও মন্দিরের কোন উল্লেখ নেই। গোপালের পুত্র ধর্ম পাল (৭৮১ - ৮২২ খ্রি) সিংহাসনে আরোহণ করে দীর্ঘকাল রাজত্ব করেন ও রাজ্যকে বাংলা বিহার ছাড়িয়ে পাকিস্তানের উত্তর - পশ্চিম সীমান্তের গান্ধার পর্যন্ত বিস্তৃত করেন। সম্রাট ধর্মপাল অনেক নিষ্ঠাবান বৌদ্ধ ছিলেন ও তিনিই বিক্রমশীলা ও সোমপুর বিহার প্রতিষ্ঠা করেন। অন্য মতে, বিখ্যাত তিব্বতীয় ইতিহাস গ্রন্থ পাগ সাম জোন ঝাং এর লেখক অত্যন্ত সুস্পষ্টভাবে ধর্মপালের পুত্র দেবপাল (৮১০-৮৫০) কর্তৃক সোমপুরে নির্মিত বিশাল বিহার ও সুউচ্চ মন্দিরের উল্লেখ করেছেন। সোমপুর বিহারের ভিক্ষুরা নালন্দা, বুদ্ধগয়া প্রভৃতি ভারতীয় বিভিন্ন বৌদ্ধ তীর্থস্থানে অর্থ ও ধন রত্ন দান করতেন বলে বিভিন্ন লিপিতে উল্লেখ করা আছে যা ১০ম - ১১শ শতাব্দীতে সমৃদ্ধশীল অবস্থার ইঙ্গিত বহন করে। এছাড়া ৯ম শতাব্দী পর্যন্ত পাল রাজাদের পৃষ্ঠপোষকতায় সোমপুর বিহার ছাড়াও অগ্রপুর (রাজশাহীর অগ্রাদিগুণ), উষ্মপুর, গোটপুর, এতপুর ও জগদ্দল ( রাজশাহীর জগদল) বিহারের উল্লেখ পাওয়া যায়। ৯ম শতাব্দীর শেষভাগে গুর্জর রাজ প্রথম ভোজ ও মহেন্দ্র পাল, পাল সাম্রাজ্যের বিশেষ ক্ষতিসাধন করেন। পরে ১০ম শতাব্দীর শেষভাগে পাল বংশীয় রাজা মহীপাল (৯৯৫ - ১০৪৩) সাম্রাজ্য পুনরুদ্ধার করেন ও সোমপুর বিহার মেরামত করেন। কিন্তু মহীপাল ও তার পুত্র নয়াপালের মৃত্যুর পর আবার পাল বংশের পতন শুরু হয়। এই সুযোগে মধ্যভারতের চেদীরাজ কর্ণ, চোলরাজ রাজেন্দ্র ও দিব্বো নামের এক দেশীয় কৈবর্ত সামন্ত নরপতি পর পর বরেন্দ্রভূমি আক্রমণ করেন। নালন্দায় পাহাড়পুর মন্দির ও বিহার ধ্বংসের উল্লেখ সম্ভবত এ সময়ের আক্রমণের। ১১শ শতাব্দীতে পাল বংশীয় রামপাল হৃতরাজ্য পুনরুদ্ধার করেন। ১২শ শতাব্দীতে দাক্ষিণাত্যের কর্ণাট থেকে আগত সেন রাজারা বাংলা দখল করেন। সে রাজদের আমলে সোমপুররাজকীয় পৃষ্ঠপোষকতা হারায়। এ সময় শেষবারের মত সোমপুরের পতন শুরু হয়।

1. Ruins of the Buddhist Vihara at Paharpur [World Heritage, 1985]
The Pala Empire was an early Indian empire of Bengali Buddhist dynasty ruling from Bengal (which included present day Bangladesh) from the 8th to the 12th centuries.
The Somapura Mahavihara, a creation of Dharmapala, at Paharpur, Bangladesh, is the largest Buddhist Vihara in the Indian subcontinent, and has been described as a pleasure to the eyes of the world.
2. Wari-Bateshwar Ruins
The Wari-Bateshwar region in Narsingdi, Bangladesh is the site of an ancient fort city dating back to 450 BC during the era of Maurya dynasty. The 2500-year-old ruins being unearthed near the old course of the Brahmaputra River are a major archaeological discovery in south Asia.
3. Jaggadala Vihara
Jagaddala Mahavihara ( late 11th century - mid-12th century) was a Buddhist monastery and seat of learning in Varendra, a geographical unit in present north Bengal in Bangladesh. It was founded by the later kings of the Pala dynasty, probably Ramapala ( 1077-1120).
4. Mahansthangarh and its Environs
The village Mahasthan contains the remains of an ancient city which was called Pundranagara or Paundravardhanapura in the territory of Pundravardhana. A limestone slab bearing six lines in Prakrit in Brahmi script, discovered in 1931, dates Mahasthangarh to at least the 3rd century BC.The fortified area was in use until the 18th century AD.
5. The Lalmai-Mainamati Group of Monuments
Mainamati is an isolated low, dimpled range of hills, dotted with more than 50 ancient Buddhist settlements dating to between the 8th and 12th century CE. It is the home of one of the most important Buddhist archaeological sites.
