A Russian Orthodox Church Outside Of Russia
This is a Russian Orthodox Chapel. If I understand correctly it was built for a Russian princess who wed one of the Hessen's aristocrats.
This I believe happened someone in the early 1900s - but it may have been before.
The church is fascinating to see in the 'normal' surrounding of Darmstadt Germany.
This is something I think that you don't get to see everyday.

Ella's Song by Kurt Sander
Ella's Song is an extended dramatic work for soprano and piano quartet written by composer Kurt Sander.
The life of St. Elizabeth Feodorovna, Grand Duchess of Russia, is one of the most fascinating and inspiring in all history. Born of German ancestry, the young princess “Ella,” as her family knew her, found herself thrust into the bloody pages of Russian history as the new wife of Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich.
She came to live in St. Petersburg during a time when the dark cloud of revolution was growing. The ubiquitous threats against the ruling class were realized through assassinations of key figures in the Russian nobility. Elizabeth did not escape such tragedy. A terrorist of the Socialist-Revolutionary Party hurled a bomb into the carriage of the Grand Duke which disintegrated the carriage and literally blew the Grand Duke to pieces.
Elizabeth’s response to this tragedy was to find consolation in humanitarian causes and through an ever-increasing devotion to the Russian Orthodox faith. She departed the Imperial Court and took on the monastic habit. From that point on, she dedicated her life to helping the sick and downtrodden of Moscow and providing spiritual guidance as abbess of a convent.
In the decade that followed, the communists stepped up their persecution of all things religious and all people associated with the Tsar. Being “guilty” of both, Vladimir Lenin called for Elizabeth’s arrest and imprisonment. She was forcibly taken from her convent and consequently forced to leave her flock alone. After some months of captivity she, and those with her, were buried alive in an abandoned mine shaft at the hands of the communists. It was her life of compassion, contrition, and martyrdom that eventually led to her canonization as a saint of the Russian Orthodox Church.
Ella’s Song is a collection of scenes that mark the various points in the life of St. Elizabeth. Each is sung from the point of view of Katherine “Kitty” Koslyaninova, who was the Grand Duchess’ lady-in-waiting and long-time friend. The text, while historically fictional, incorporates actual quotes from letters, poems, as well as other source material drawn from her life. Of these sources, I remain most indebted to author Lubov Millar who wrote the most detailed book to date on the life of St. Elizabeth, Grand Duchess Elizabeth of Russia: New Martyr of the Commuinist Yoke Nikodemos Orthodox Publication Society, Richfield Springs, NY, 1988.
Performers:
Irina Mozyleva, soprano
Frank Restesan, violin
Holly Attar, viola
Amy Gillingham, cello
This work was commissioned by the Kentucky Music Teachers Association and premiered at their 2014 Conference on the campus of Murray State University. These excerpts are from the live recording of this performance.

Darmstadt (, also UK: , US: , German: [ˈdaɐ̯mʃtat] (listen)) is a city in the state of Hesse in Germany, located in the southern part of the Rhine-Main-Area (Frankfurt Metropolitan Region). Darmstadt had a population of around 157,437 at the end of 2016. The Darmstadt Larger Urban Zone has 430,993 inhabitants.Darmstadt holds the official title City of Science (German: Wissenschaftsstadt) as it is a major centre of scientific institutions, universities, and high-technology companies. The European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) and the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) are located in Darmstadt, as well as GSI Centre for Heavy Ion Research, where several chemical elements such as bohrium (1981), meitnerium (1982), hassium (1984), darmstadtium (1994), roentgenium (1994), and copernicium (1996) were discovered. The existence of the following elements were also confirmed at GSI Centre for Heavy Ion Research: nihonium (2012), flerovium (2009), moscovium (2012), livermorium (2010), and tennessine (2012). The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) is an international accelerator facility under construction. Darmstadt is also the seat of the world's oldest pharmaceutical company, Merck, which is the city's largest employer.
Darmstadt was formerly the capital of a sovereign country, the Grand Duchy of Hesse and its successor, the People's State of Hesse, a federal state of Germany. As the capital of an increasingly prosperous duchy, the city gained some international prominence and remains one of the wealthiest cities in Europe. In the 20th century, industry (especially chemicals), as well as large science and electronics (later information technology) sectors became increasingly important, and are still a major part of the city's economy. It is also home to the football club SV Darmstadt 98.

SUMMARY
=======
Christian monasticism is the devotional practice of individuals who live ascetic and typically cloistered lives that are dedicated to Christian worship. It began to develop early in the history of the Christian Church, modeled upon scriptural examples and ideals, including those in the Old Testament, but not mandated as an institution in the scriptures. It has come to be regulated by religious rules (e.g. the Rule of Saint Augustine, Anthony the Great, St Pachomius, the Rule of St Basil, the Rule of St Benedict,) and, in modern times, the Canon law of the respective Christian denominations that have forms of monastic living. Those living the monastic life are known by the generic terms monks (men) and nuns (women). The word monk originated from the Greek monachos monk, itself from monos meaning alone.Monks did not live in monasteries at first, rather, they began by living alone, as the word monos might suggest. As more people took on the lives of monks, living alone in the wilderness, they started to come together and model themselves after the original monks nearby. Quickly, the monks formed communities to further their ability to observe an ascetic life. According to Christianity historian Robert Louis Wilken, By creating an alternate social structure within the Church they laid the foundations for one of the most enduring Christian institutions . . . Monastics generally dwell in a monastery, whether they live there in community (cenobites), or in seclusion (recluses).
