The Kenai Peninsula is a large peninsula jutting from the southern coast of Alaska in the United States. The name Kenai is probably derived from Kenayskaya, the Russian name for Cook Inlet, which borders the peninsula to the west.

A couple friends and I hiked the Russian River Falls trail in Cooper Landing, Alaska! We had a blast! The trail was kid friendly, great exercise, and a good time! We did run into some bear poop, so it's a good thing we brought guns!

Alaska's Challenge of Change
In just one decade, the Inuit town of Barrow, Alaska was transformed by the oil boom from America's northernmost outpost of subsistence hunters to one of the richest municipalities in the United States Producer Andrew Tkach and cameraman Mike Phelan documented the profound changes the people experienced in the 1980's for CNN's Special Assignments Unit. They also trekked on the sea ice with an Inuit hunter who warned of the consequences of a major oil spill in the Arctic. His warning are more urgent than ever, even though a federal judge recently declared the Trump administration's attempt to revoke a ban on new oil and gas drilling in Arctic waters illegal.

Known for its world class wild salmon and rainbow trout fishing, visitors can also chance seeing grizzly & black bears, moose, mountain goats, sheep, eagles, swans, loons and other magnificent wildlife. Having visited and lived in Cooper Landing for many years, this is definitely one of our favorite places!

It flows northward from Upper Russian Lake in the Kenai Mountains through Lower Russian Lake, draining into the Kenai River at the town of Cooper Landing. Many sections of the Russian River/Upper Kenai are considered fly fishing only and the clear water Russian is one of the most popular red salmon fisheries in the state of Alaska. Brown and black bears are abundant in this area searching for salmon for themselves and/or their young. If you go please use precaution, common sense and be prepared.

Historical documentary of the Kasilof area, showing a broader perspective on the history of the convergence of Western society and indigenous Alaskans.
Directed by Paul Gray, independent TV producer and creator of the “Exploring Alaska Native Voices” television show.
The documentary is a blend of modern footage shot by Gray and film clips and still pictures of the Kasilof region from the 1910-1940 era gathered by Gray from the University of Alaska film archive, long-time Kasilof residents and other sources.
Some of the old images depict the hunts of Dall DeWeese, a Canon City, Colo., hunter who worked to designate part of the Kenai Peninsula specifically for the preservation of wild game. Also detailed in the documentary is DeWeese securing the services of Andrew Berg — Alaska’s first guide — who he found working at the Kasilof cannery.
There also are several clips explaining the often inglorious relationship between white hunters and the indigenous Native people of the region known as the Dena’ina.
The documentary also features numerous interviews with people knowledgeable about the Kasilof area and its history, including Alan Boraas, Ph.D. Professor of Anthropology at UAA Kenai Peninsula College; Gary Titus, a historian for the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge; Catherine Cassidy, who along with Titus co-authored “Alaska’s No. 1 Guide — The History and Journals of Andrew Berg”; and Sasha Lindgren, a member of the Kenaitze Indian Tribe.
