We received rain that raised the water level over 45 feet. We were stuck on our hilltop. Many people who live at lower levels were not so fortunate. When the rain stopped we trekked down the hill to see the damage. We were surprised at just how deep this massive flood was. You can see in this video where River Road was under water. Many of our neighbors had their gas service shut off by P.G.&E for days.

Huge Storms Flood California Wine Country Town
(13 Jan 2017) The Napa Valley is just one part of California dealing with torrential floods. The Russian River in Northern California's wine region was among the tributaries still in flood. Residents in the resort town of Guerneville used canoes and kayaks to get around flooded areas, and even inside their inundated homes.
Forecasters said rain and snow would continue into Thursday afternoon. But the heaviest of the back-to-back systems fueled by an atmospheric river weather phenomenon had passed after delivering the heaviest rain in a decade.

A twelve-acre outdoor entertainment district was flooded Wednesday after a series of severe storms dumped more than a foot of rain over some areas of California wine country.
Several restaurants and stores were under several feet of water at The Barlow open-air market in Sebastopol, California.
Business owners tried to keep additional flood water out by putting up metal barriers, but in many cases the damage was already done.
The flood water came from the neighboring Laguna de Santa Rosa watershed.
Business owners say it's the worst flooding they've seen at the six-year-old development.
Meanwhile, two nearby communities were accessible only by boat after a rain-swollen river overflowed its banks and inundated low-lying areas around them overnight.
One of them, the small city of Guerneville, is officially an island, according to the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office.
An official said the nearby town of Monte Rio was also isolated by floodwaters with all roads leading to it swamped.
The swollen Russian River was forecast to rise more throughout the day, engorged by days of rain from western U.S. storms that has also dumped heavy snow in the Sierra Nevada mountains.
There also was concern about potential mudslides in hillside areas saturated from days of downpours, and in areas scarred by 2017 wildfires.

California residents view flooding damage

Emergency crews and local residents rushed to take advantage of a one-day break between storms Monday to assess damage after the heaviest rain in a decade overwhelmed parts of California and Nevada.
A weekend storm dumped more than a foot of water on parts of Northern California, forcing hundreds of people to evacuate and leaving thousands without power.
The system raised rivers out of their banks and toppled trees, among them the fabled giant sequoia dubbed Pioneer Cabin that had a tunnel carved into its base more than a century ago.
Another strong storm was bearing down on the region for Tuesday.
Such gaps between storms are what saves us from the big water, Fire Chief Max Ming said in the Russian River town of Forestville, where rescuers launched rafts and used a helicopter to search for people cut off by rising water. People hunker down and wait for it to get past.
The back-to-back storms that have hit California and Nevada since last week are part of an atmospheric river weather system that draws precipitation from the Pacific Ocean as far west as Hawaii.
That kind of system, also known as the pineapple express, poses catastrophic risks for areas hit by the heaviest rain.
