Airplane technology: Russia develops huge Ground Effect Vehicle that skims the ground - TomoNews
MOSCOW — A cargo plane designed to fly just above the ground and capable of carrying up to 500 tons of cargo in a single trip is under development in Russia.
Scientists from Russia’s Central AeroHydrodynamic Institute are currently testing models of the Ground Effect Vehicle (GEV), according to a news release on the institute’s website.
The aircraft would fly over the ground, water or ice in a range of 3 to 12 meters from the surface.
Short, wide wings are designed to trap air between the aircraft and the ground. This creates downdraughts that produce greater lift force and less drag than other fixed wing-aircraft, allowing the plane to carry bigger loads with less fuel.
Russia has a tradition of developing low-flying GEVs, also known as “ekranoplan.”
The Soviet Union built several of these giant low-flying aircraft in the 1970s and 1980s.
Perhaps the best known example was a 544-ton experimental vehicle, which was nicknamed the “Caspian Sea Monster” by Western intelligence and was the largest aircraft in the world when it was built in 1966.

Pro Russia protesters outside city buildings in east; military continue anti-terrorist operation
Pro-Russian insurgents continued their occupation of government buildings in eastern Ukraine on Wednesday, a day after Kiev launched its anti-terrorist operation aimed at trying to restore authority over the restive region.
In Slovyansk, one protester said he had no information of government forces entering the city.
But I cannot deny that it may be a fact that one or two APC's (Armoured Personnel Carriers) have been trying to get in, he said.
On Tuesday, at least 14 armoured personnel carriers flying Ukrainian flags, helicopters and military trucks were seen some 25 miles (40 kilometres) north of Slovyansk, along with at least seven busloads of government troops in black military fatigues.
Kiev said government forces clashed with around 30 gunmen at an airport near the city on Tuesday night.
In Donetsk, one balaclava-clad insurgent said they would not fire first, but if provoked by Ukrainian forces it will be very bad for them.
The central government has so far been unable to rein in the insurgents, who it says are being stirred up by paid operatives from Russia and have seized numerous government facilities in at least nine eastern cities.
The insurgents demand broader autonomy and closer ties with Russia. Complicating the political landscape, many local security forces have switched to their side.
Kiev's use of force has been tacitly approved by Washington, but denounced by Moscow.
Russia has tens of thousands of troops stationed along its border with Ukraine, raising fears that Moscow might use the instability in the predominantly Russian-speaking east as a pretext for an invasion.

'Anti-terrorist' operation in Slovyansk; pro-Russians set up improvised clinic in Donetsk
Government orders to resume military operations in parts of eastern Ukraine appeared to be taking effect on Thursday, two days after acting president, Oleksandr Turchynov, gave the order.
At least 10 military and special police armoured vehicles were parked on the road just to the north of Slovyansk, a city 160 kilometres (100 miles) west of the Russian border that has emerged as the focus of the armed insurgency.
Two helicopters were also spotted circling over the area.
Near the town of Makatikha, about 20 kilometres (12 miles) north of Slovyansk, pro-Russian militia at checkpoints set fire to barricades of car tyres in an apparent attempt to reduce visibility from the air.
Troops ordered residents in the surrounding area to keep away.
An Associated Press reporter observed about two dozen militiamen manning checkpoints along the road earlier in the day.
No gunfire had been heard by late morning.
Elsewhere in the east, pro-Russian demonstrators in the city of Donetsk set up an improvised clinic in the seized regional administrative building for protesters who need medical treatment but refuse to go to a proper hospital because out of fear of the authorities.
One of the masked men occupying the building claimed there were thousands of people inside and the central government would have to kill them all if they decided to take action against them.
On Wednesday, the pro-Russian activists said they vacated two floors and a session hall in the building to allow the local government to start working again.
However a large number of administrative buildings in the east of Ukraine still remain under control of the pro-Russian demonstrators.
Ukraine is going through its biggest political crisis since the fall of Soviet Union, set off by months-long anti-government protests and President Viktor Yanukovych's flight to Russia.
Yanukovych's ouster sparked wide anger in his support base in Ukraine's east.
The insurgents, who claim Ukraine's post-Yanukovych government consists of nationalists who will suppress the east's large Russian-speaking population, are demanding regional autonomy or even annexation by Russia.

Rebels claim Ukraine shelling civilian areas
Pro-Russian rebels on Wednesday accused the Ukrainian army of shelling civilian areas in eastern Ukraine rather than the separatist positions.
The rebels claimed that government forces were targeting civilians as their positions were very well defended.
Separatist forces have almost fully encircled government forces in the town of Debaltseve in the Donetsk region, putting them within grasp of a decisive new victory.
The town has a strategic railway hub and looked deserted on Wednesday with many houses damaged by rocket shrapnel. The sound of shelling and gunfire could be heard in the background every few minutes.
Ukrainian military spokesman Andriy Lysenko confirmed Debaltseve was surrounded on two flanks and was being heavily targeted with Grad multiple rocket launchers.
Other officials denied government forces were close to folding and said separatist claims were exaggerated.
Debaltseve is one of multiple flashpoints that have flared up across eastern Ukraine since the start of the month, when full-blown fighting between Russian-backed rebels and government forces erupted anew following a month of relative tranquillity.
Since the conflict started in April, more than 5,100 lives have been lost and over 900,000 people across the country have been displaced, according to Ukraine government estimates.

Russia: Suspects killed during anti-terror raid
Two suspects have been killed during an anti-terror raid near Moscow. According to Russian authorities, gunfire erupted when officers surrounded a house in Orekhovo Zuyevo.
Officials said they were targeting a group which was planning to carry out an attack in the capital.
We saw people in camouflage near a two-storey building. There were snipers on garages opposite. All transport was stopped and police blocked the approaches to the house, said one witness.
A third person was held during Monday's operation.
All of the suspects were said to be Russian citizens. It is claimed they had taken part in training in the region of Afghanistan and Pakistan.
