Social media users are going ballistic after one Chinese woman posted four photos of herself and a pal with their Mercedes-Benz SUV on the grounds of Beijing’s Forbidden City. The 600-year-old former imperial palace has banned all vehicles since 2013 in an attempt to protect the cultural dignity of the site and its hundreds of historic edifices, reported the Xinhua News Agency. “The Palace Museum was deeply distressed and sincerely apologizes to the public,” stated palace management on Friday. The four photos seemed to confirm the perception that people of wealth and power possess special privileges in the nation, though it remains unclear if the unidentified woman hails from an influential family, reported The Associated Press. The shots show two young, sunglasses-sporting females and their Mercedes SUV in front of the looming Gate of Supreme Harmony. The drama went viral on Friday, and one user of social media site Weibo claimed that the rich and powerful can do anything with immunity in China. One of the pictured women seemed to make things worse by stating in another post that she and her pal enjoyed the visit without the usual crowds on a Monday, the day the landmark is closed, reported the Global Times. Many questioned why the women were afforded honors not given to visiting heads of state, who must disembark from their vehicles and walk into the palace, according to the Global Times. The alleged owner of the SUV told the Beijing News that the woman is a friend who had been invited to a palace event and that several guests were allowed to drive on the grounds. Woman’s vandalism in Lotte Mart sparks backlash in China
A Chinese woman’s video of her vandalizing a Korean supermarket in northeast China’s Shenyang city to express her opposition to the chain’s contribution to THAAD deployment in South Korea has sparked widespread criticism from Chinese netizens.
The 49-second clip, posted by the woman on kuaishou, a popular live streaming platform in China, showed her smashing instant noodle boxes, damaging product packaging, stealing snacks, and even flinging her middle finger in a provocative way, while a patriotic song played in the background.
The viral video invited strong backlash from the Chinese online community, with many criticizing the woman’s maleficence disguised as patriotism.
“Don’t you hooligans make nationalism your excuse?” said user @littlehawk on China’s Twitter-like Weibo.
“Boycotting Korean products? No! We should boycott such idiots first,” commented another user @Dingjiajie.
South Korean conglomerate Lotte Group has come under fire from Chinese people over the past few weeks after it agreed to provide a land in South Korea for the installation of a US antimissile defense system. THAAD batteries, which the South Korean government has claimed will be deployed in response to the missile threat from the DPRK, have powerful radars that could be potentially used to penetrate Chinese territories.
Beijing has repeatedly protested against the THAAD deployment, but also reiterated the government’s consistent stance of welcoming foreign companies to operate in China.
The video soon caught the attention of local police, who announced that investigation into the incident is underway.
“Those people, whether stupid or evil, have tarnished the mother nation in the name of patriotism,”

Suspicious Death Spark Mass Protest in Beijing
SWAT police, anti-riot gear and a massive security contingent. These pictures were taken today (May 8) in Beijing, China's capital city.
Security is in full-force after a large protest took place here at the Jingwen Clothing and Apparel Shopping Mall.
Most of these protestors are migrant workers from Anhui province. They're demanding answers after a 22-year-old woman died here last Friday (May 3).
The woman, identified by Chinese netizens as Yuan Liya, was originally from Anhui province. She worked as a shop assistant there. Beijing police said she committed suicide by jumping from the 6th floor at around 5am on May 3rd. But protestors here suspect foul play.
There are unconfirmed claims online that Yuan was gang-raped by security guards at the shopping mall, and that her body was thrown from the building.
Yuan's family has asked police to release surveillance footage of the site but so far, authorities have refused.
Internet censors have also started removing online discussion of the subject. According to China Digital times, these search terms have been blocked on Sina Weibo, China's version of Twitter.
But information is still getting through. Pictures are being posted online showing protestors holding banners and a strong police presence.
At the time of this report, no official mainland media has reported on the frenzy that has gripped the capital city.
