In the narrow cobblestone lanes and small squares with frame houses and fountains, visitors to Frankfurt feel like they have been transported back in time. In the large and small Rittergasse, in Paradiesgasse and Klappergasse “Epelwoi pubs” are lined up one after another in Old Sachsenhausen (Alt-Sachsenhausen). On long benches on wooden tables visitors drink their “Stöffche” from “Gerippten” – apple wine from ribbed apple wine glasses. There are also Frankfurt specialities such as beef with green sauce (Grüne Soße), hand cheese (Handkäs), or a takeaway pretzel from the pretzel man.
The centre of the apple wine quarter is the Klappergasse with the famous Frau Rauscher fountain. At irregular intervals it spits out water, sometimes catching inattentive pedestrians. In no other neighbourhood are there as many working fountains as in Sachsenhausen. Residents of the district celebrate this every summer with a fountain festival with a large programme, a procession and voting for a fountain queen. The festival was mentioned as early as 1490; residents celebrated after the annual cleaning of their drinking water fountains.
Anyone who wants to avoid the lively, damp and cheerful festivities on the Klappergasse and the surrounding area should choose apple wine bars in concealed locations with secluded courtyards on the edge of the neighbourhood or near Schweizer Straße, Sachsenhausen’s attractive shopping area. Frankfurt’s youth hostel is also located right on the Main river – close to the pulsing life and near all the interesting landmarks.

Frankfurt is home to Lufthansa Airlines, one of the biggest in Europe. Not only can you fly on Lufthansa to visit Germany, but there are many connecting flights and therefore many layovers in Frankfurt.
So what should you do with a long layover in Frankfurt, Germany?
I had something like 15 hours, but even having 8 hours would be plenty of time to get to the center or Frankfurt for some sightseeing, German food and walking around.
First step is to get out of the airport and catch the train into the center of Frankfurt - that can be a little confusing as Frankfurt Airport is kind of confusing. Anyway, navigate your way to the train station at the airport. There you can buy a ticket - I bought a 5 people group ticket for 16.60 EUR. They had other pricing options as well.
Frankfurt (Main) Hauptwache - This is the center of Frankfurt and it took about 15 minutes from the airport.
Römerberg - Just a 10 minute walk from Hauptwache station is Römerberg, the historical center of Frankfurt and a wonderful public square to walk around and do some sightseeing. But we continued walking to find some German food - specifically Frankfurt food.
Gaststätte Atschel - This restaurant specializes in local Frankfurt German food. We ordered a number of dishes including apple wine and Frankfurter sausages with sauerkraut which are delicious and a food you can’t miss. Total price - 47.60 EUR
Köylü-Döner - Just down the road from Gaststätte Atschel is Köylü-Döner, one of the best places in Frankfurt for a Turkish doner kebab which is very popular in Germany and absolutely delicious. Price - 4.90 EUR
The Holy Cross Brewing Society - Finally, just a last minute decision, we had a coffer at The Holy Cross Brewing Society which was wonderful. After coffee we headed back to Frankfurt Airport to catch our flight.

Frankfurt-Am-Main is the 5th biggest city in Germany and you can’t finish it even if you tried! The airport alone covers 2,000 hectares and has its own train. The city has countless museums, two major botanical gardens, and lots of art and cultural things to see thanks to Goethe’s heritage.
