MEKONG DELTA VIETNAM - Saigon Day Trip
We experienced local life along the Mekong Delta Vietnam for our last day in Saigon. We show you the best Saigon day trip that Vietnam has to offer, traveling by boat down the Mekong Delta and exploring a local Vietnam village along the way.
Our trip to the Mekong Delta Vietnam started with a 2 hour luxury van ride to a town called My Tho. Although we don’t normally take public tours, we arranged a small 6 person group tour with Vietnam Adventure Tours. Once we arrived in My Tho, we boarded a private boat to set sail down the Mekong Delta River. The 15 minute boat ride took us across the Mekong river to unicorn island where we explored a tourist area set up to mimic a traditional Vietnam Village. The activities on this island include: Bee Farm and Honey Tasting, Snake Holding, Coconut Candy Production, Chocolate Production, Snake Wine, and a Fruit Farm with traditional Mekong Delta music.
Next we got back on the Vietnam boat tour down the Mekong Delta to visit the area of Ben Tre. This is where we got to see a side of a more authentic Vietnam by boating down the river in a small sampan boat. This is one of the best things to do in Vietnam because you get to experience a world away from all development. We wish this part of the Mekong river tour was longer, as the small sampan boat ride was only 15 minutes long.
Next up on the Mekong Delta Tour was lunch which was included in our tour and very delicious. We were served a variety of Vietnamese food including fish, spring rolls, soup, rice, morning glory and prawns. The Vietnamese lunch was absolutely delicious!
When visiting Saigon Vietnam, we highly recommend you put a Mekong Delta Tour on your list of must do activities. Out of all the things to do in Saigon, this was one of our favorites! A quick 2 hour Saigon day trip away seems like a completely separate world apart from the hustle of Ho Chi Minh City.
If you’re interested in booking one of the best tours in Saigon, contact Vietnam Adventure Tours and request Van as your tour guide! The tour you see is the VIP Mekong Delta Tour with a luxury 7 person limo. Most Mekong tours start from $15 USD and go up to $80 USD for a public tour, and private tours are $80 USD per person and up. We hope you enjoyed our trip down the Vietnam Mekong Delta and if you have any questions please leave us a comment! We’d love to hear about your Vietnam travel or plans to visit the area.

The Mekong River is one of Asia's great waterways -a powerful, mesmerising and life-giving force that careers from the icy mountains of Tibet to the humid rice fields of southern Vietnam. Along its journey the river blesses Tibet, China, Burma, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam with its bounty of food and transportation opportunities and is the lifeblood of thousands of people who live along its banks and survive from its fish and the irrigation opportunities it presents to otherwise remote rural areas.
I have explored and journeyed along the river at various points of its path through south east Asia. On my first trip to the region as a young backpacker in the late 1990s I took a slow boat from Huay Xai (the border town in the north of Thailand and Laos) to Luang Prabang, and from this time onward I have been fascinated by exploring the Mekong and its tributaries. I have been fortunate to travel down and stay alongside the river in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia. However, the so-called 'Mekong Delta' region of Vietnam had eluded me on my travels until recently, and what a treat I had been missing!
The Mekong Delta refers to a large area of Vietnam from its border with Cambodia to the coastal shores of the south of the country where the Mekong finally ends its enormous journey. The area is often referred to locally as the 'Rice Bowl', such is the fertility and irrigation possibilities that water's flow provides.
Most visitors to Vietnam will remark about the frenetic nature with which the Vietnamese people seem to go about pretty much everything they do. Crossing overland into Vietnam from Laos or Cambodia, you will notice a marked difference in the levels of human activity. I recall travelling into northern Vietnam from Laos once; on the Laos side of the border were remote villages scattered every twenty kilometres or so, with dry paddy fields and the occasional glimpse of tribal ethnic minority villagers sleeping in the mid-day heat. Yet, just across the border it is a completely different story, with ingenious irrigation and farming systems in place and a hive of activity with people planting, chopping, building, transporting. I recall that on the Vietnamese side of the border they get an extra rice harvest every year. The reasons for these differences are probably worthy of a separate article altogether so we won't go into them here. Nevertheless, the Mekong Delta mirrors these earlier observations -- never before I had I seen such intense and incredible use of the river's unquestionable gifts.
Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) and the Mekong Delta - 4K
Our day starts with a bus ride from Ho Chi Minh City to the Cu Chi tunnel complex utilised by the Viet Cong during the war against the US. The following day we re-join our bus in Ho Chi Minh City for the journey to Cai Be, situated in the Mekong Delta where we board a boat to begin exploring the Delta region and the people who live and work on the waterways created as the Mekong splits into many branches on its way to the South China Sea.

Mekong Delta Tour, Ho Chi Minh Vietnam
This is our 3rd video. Where we take a tour to the Mekong Delta. We took a nice tour bus from HCMC to our destination. The tour was amazing! We captured pieces of the tour on camera simply because we were too busy enjoying ourselves. We listened to traditional Vietnamese music, viewed how they make coconut candy by hand, ate a delicious lunch, took a bike ride through the neighborhood. We also became bee hive specialists j.k and wrestled with a baby python snake. To get there we paddled through the Mekong River surrounded by palm trees and locals. We highly recommend taking a Mekong Delta Tour if you ever go to Ho Chi Minh City. We end our day watching the street bike races drinking a fresh fruit smoothie!

HCMC to Phnom Penh Cambodia | Mekong Express Bus
Taking the Mekong Express Bus from HCMC to Phnom Penh Cambodia.
With our Vietnam visas expiring, it was time to move on to the next country. The cheapest way to travel from HCMC Vietnam to Cambodia is by bus. Generally, the bus ride takes around 6 hours, but our travel day happened to fall on the Water Festival in the capital city of Phnom Penh.
The bus ride was pretty comfortable, but the seats are rather narrow. With my broad backside, I was a little squished in the seats, but that’s to be expected. We are not your typical Asian sized people. The seat size is really the only complaint we had about the trip. Otherwise, we were relaxing and enjoying the scenery.

PHNOM PENH TO HO CHI MINH CITY BY BUS | Vietnam | Vlog 031
After three weeks in Cambodia we are finally leaving to head for Vietnam! We jump back on a Giant Ibis bus for the 7 hour journey from Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh City which of course includes our first land border crossing.
Upon arriving we go from issue to issue, discovering an ant infestation at our first hostel and almost losing each other trying to find an ATM. After all of the drama we find a new hotel and make our way out on to Bui Vien walking street after a 9 hour travel day.
We hunt down a cheap and authentic meal and end up having an incredible dinner at Bun Cha (which happens to actually be from Hanoi) for under £6!

Day 10 & 11 - Ho Chi Minh City, Arriving Phnom Penh (Intrepid - The Best Of Vietnam & Cambodia)
FULL DAYS DESCRIPTION BELOW
Our adventure to Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand, through travel company Intrepid.
November 2015
Day 10
Free day for us while some of the Vietnam group go back home again and the new Cambodia group arrive.
We went to a local market that sold squirrel poo coffee??? and popped to Fanny's to see what all the fuss was about.
Exquisite ice cream! gotta say.
I also took a wander to find some of Ho Chi Minh's rather insane electricity cables... very interesting!
We met the new group at 6pm and our new tour guide Sophea.
Day 11
We left around 8am by public bus to make our way to Cambodia. The public bus put our UK ones to shame; free water, food, aircon and wifi! what more could you ask for lol.
It took nearly 2 hours to get out of Ho Chi Minh City, then we reached the border at 11:30. No fuss crossing over really and we were on our way again by 12:50.
We got into Phnom Penh at 4pm, quickly got taken to our hotel to drop suitcases off and then hopped onto our tuk tuks for a wee (albeit dark) tour of the city.
Roads are a lot bumpier in Cambodia! There was some white knuckles gripping tightly on the tuk tuks lol.
We ate at The Fresh Chilli Restaurant at 7 then headed back to the hotel to sleep... very tired that night.
Vietnamese music is the album Về Quê (Hòa Tấu Tranh Bầu Sáo Nhị Vol.1)
Cambodian music is Choul Saich Srova Chhar Ueng - Ros Sereysothea
