Today we have the vessel the Zhen Hua 16 transiting through the Cape Fear River. Currently the Cape Fear River is closed to all vessel traffic, and that is necessary to ensure the safety of the public as well as the crew on board the vessel.

STORYLINE
Four huge cargo cranes destined for the docks at the state port in Wilmington, North Carolina arrived at the last leg of their long journey on Saturday as traffic was shut down on the Cape Fear River for their transit.
Coast Guard official, Lt. Adam Schmid, said river traffic was stopped to ensure the safety of the public as well as the crew on board the vessel.
The cranes aboard the 788-foot (240 metre) Zhen Hua 16 left Shanghai, China, on 2 December for a trip around the world. The ship was so large that it couldn't use the Panama Canal and was forced to go around the southern tip of Africa at the Cape of Good Hope on the way to North Carolina.
Once the ship arrived off the Cape Fear River, it didn't start the 26-mile (42 kilometres) trip up the river until weather conditions settled so engineers could board the ship.
Officials said the cranes are the central part of the port's 143 (m) million US dollars expansion of its container terminal and will allow larger ships to call on the port.
The ship is specially designed to carry the cranes almost completely erect.
It draws about 38 feet (13 metres) of water and is 138 feet (46 metres) wide. With the booms of the cranes extended, it is nearly 430 (144 metres) feet wide.

We need a new beginning.
It's time to remember 2008, the good and the bad.
We have lost a lot of money,
A lot of achievements, like Michael Phelps, first black president, it's hard to beat out 2008 I think.
Just a good year, meeting new friends, new people, lots of fun, partying.
People in my family losing jobs and stuff, its scary man.
It's also a time to look forward to 2009.
A raise, we work hard.
'We like Obama, so we are happy you Americans chose Obama for president.
The economy on the negative point, I'm glad I still have my job.
(Thomas Vala, Long Island, NY)
I think we have a lot of focusing to do on this country, and it's about time we start doing it.
(Jamillah Galvez, Wilmington, NC)
I'm excited I want everyone to be positive this year, be kind, give the old lady the seat on the bus, help the old man on the train station, life is about helping people.

Battleship 1961 Celebration
Celebration and Activities aboard the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA in 1961 upon her arrival in Wilmington, NC.
After serving as a training vessel for midshipmen, NORTH CAROLINA was decommissioned 27 June 1947 and placed in the Inactive Reserve Fleet in Bayonne, New Jersey, for the next 14 years. In 1958 the announcement of her impending scrapping led to a statewide campaign by citizens of North Carolina to save the ship from the scrappers torches and bring her back to her home state. The Save Our Ship (SOS) campaign was successful and the Battleship arrived in her current berth on 2 October 1961. She was dedicated on 29 April 1962 as the State's memorial to its World War II veterans and the 10,000 North Carolinians who died during the war. Donation from the estate of Hugh Morton

Maryland
Did you know... that the only actual wild ponies in the U.S. live in Maryland? ...or that the Maryland Blue Crab is the official State Crustacean? ...and that a Marylander wrote the U.S. national anthem? Get on a guided tour with Ambassador Eacho on Maryland's history and beauty. #50states #MD
Transcript:
Hello, I'm Ambassador Eacho from the U.S. Embassy in Vienna, Austria. I want to tell you about my home state, Maryland.
Maryland is a small state on the eastern seaboard. But don't let its size fool you. The landscape of Maryland is very diverse -- from the low lying eastern shore and Chesapeake Bay area to the metropolitan city, Baltimore, to the forested Appalachian foothills and the mountains in the western part of the state.
Maryland is one of the original 13 colonies. It was established in 1632 when Cecilius Calvert, the baron of Baltimore, received a charter for the land. Calvert named the colony Maryland, in honor of Henrietta Maria, the wife of England's King Charles the first.
In 1788, Maryland became the 7th state.
Maryland earned the nickname, Old Line State, in 1776 when one General stood firm against British troops in the Battle of Long Island, during the Revolutionary War.
Today, Maryland is better known for its beautiful beaches and boardwalk in Ocean City. Have you tried Boardwalk fries doused in vinegar? That's a staple of this seaside town.
Maryland is also known for its crabs steamed in Old Bay Seasoning. In 1989, the Maryland Blue Crab was designated as the official State Crustacean.
During lunch hour on the Chesapeake, vendors sell more crab cakes than hot dogs and hamburgers. And picking crabs is as much fun as eating them.
Further down the coast is the barrier island, Assateague, famous for the free-roaming ponies, the only actual wild ponies in the United States.
The state has 31 miles of coastline on the Atlantic Ocean. However, much of Maryland's 12,400 square miles consists of inland water, including some 400 manmade lakes. The Chesapeake Bay that splits the state is the largest estuary in the United States. It's no wonder that sailing is a favorite pastime in my state. In fact, the capital city, Annapolis, is known as the sailing capital of the world.
In 1980 Baltimore opened Harborplace, a shopping, dining and entertainment complex, and another hot spot for tourists. The National Aquarium, one of the largest and most technologically advanced, is located in Baltimore's Inner harbor.
Every year, the world hears the state song, Maryland, My Maryland. It's sung at the Preakness Stakes, the second leg of the famous Triple Crown thoroughbred race, held at the Pimlico Racecourse in Baltimore.
A more famous song was written by Marylander Francis Scott Key, while he watched the British bombardment of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812. The Star Spangled Banner was officially adopted as America's national anthem in 1931.
Maryland is home to many famous people.
Baseball slugger Babe Ruth was born in Baltimore, not far from Oriole Park at Camden Yards. You can visit the Sultan of Swing's birthplace museum. Swimmer Michael Phelps, of Towson, was the first American to win 8 medals in a single Olympic games.
The Clara Barton National Historic site in Glenn Echo commemorates the life of the founder of the American Red Cross.
Other famous Marylanders include jazz-blues singer Billie Holiday and rock singer Frank Zappa, as well as author Upton Sinclair and abolitionist Harriet Tubman.
Marylanders are as diverse as the state they live in.
My favorite thing about my home state is...crabs...hard shell crabs, soft shells, crab cakes, you name it. The Maryland blue crab is the best tasting crab in the world, and you can never get enough!

HOME FROM THE SEA U.S. NAVY MUSEUM SHIPS USS TEXAS, USS CONSTITUTION, USS MISSOURI 45844
Home from the Sea is a short U.S. Navy film that shows several of the famous U.S. warships—the USS Constitution, Niagara, Kairo, Olympia, Texas, North Carolina, Missouri, and Arizona—and where they rest today. The film opens with shots of wrecked ships. An illustration shows the warship Constitution, the ship’s captains Edward Preble, Isaac Hull, and William Bainbridge. There are illustrations of the ship in combat, and old photographs show the ship as it is being restored. Footage shows the restored vessel at its home in the Navy Shipyard in Boston (1:40). Next, the film shows the USS Niagara (02:08), the relief flagship for Oliver Hazard Perry. Footage shows the ship’s canons on the deck as it is docked at the Erie Maritime Museum in Erie, PA. Viewers see the leftover wreckage of the USS Cairo (02:55). Photographs show the Civil War-era ship, and the remains of the ship after it was raised from the Yazoo River. Next, the film covers the cruiser USS Olympia (03:24). Illustrations show Commodore George Dewey and the ship as it fights in Manila Bay. The next ship showcased in the film is the USS Texas (03:54), which is shown sails at sea as part of the British Grand Fleet during WWI. Footage shows it during Operation Overlord; viewers see the ship’s guns firing on German targets. Soldiers wade to Normandy’s shore. The film then shows the old warship as it rests at the San Jacinto Battleground Monument. An aerial view shows the USS North Carolina (05:17), the 35-ton super-dreadnaught. Viewers see the deck of the ship, with a plane parked on it, as well as the ship’s guns. The film shows the ship lit up at night at Wilmington, NC. Next, viewers see the USS Missouri (06:12), as it is docked at the Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, WA. Footage shows the Japanese surrender to Allied forces on 2 September 1945 on the deck of the Missouri (06:45). The film then cuts to footage of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the sinking of the USS Arizona (07:18). An aerial view shows the USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor. The film concludes with shots of the ships featured in the short film.
USS Constitution, also known as Old Ironsides, is a wooden-hulled, three-masted heavy frigate of the United States Navy named by President George Washington after the United States Constitution.
USS Niagara, commonly called the US Brig Niagara or the Flagship Niagara, is a wooden-hulled snow-brig that served as the relief flagship for Oliver Hazard Perry in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812.
USS Cairo was one of the first American ironclad warships built at the beginning of the U.S. Civil War. Cairo was the lead ship of the City-class gunboats and named for Cairo, Illinois.
USS Olympia (C-6/CA-15/CL-15/IX-40) is a protected cruiser that saw service in the United States Navy from her commissioning in 1895 until 1922. This vessel became famous as the flagship of Commodore George Dewey at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish–American War in 1898.
USS Texas (BB-35), the second ship of the United States Navy named in honor of the U.S. state of Texas, is a New York-class battleship. The ship was launched on 18 May 1912 and commissioned on 12 March 1914.
USS North Carolina (BB-55) is the lead ship of the North Carolina class of fast battleships, the first vessel of the type built for the United States Navy. Built under the Washington Treaty system, North Carolina's design was limited in displacement and armament, though the United States used a clause in the Second London Naval Treaty to increase the main battery from the original armament of nine 14-inch (360 mm) guns to nine 16 in (410 mm) guns.
USS Missouri (BB-63) (Mighty Mo or Big Mo) is an Iowa-class battleship and was the third ship of the United States Navy to be named after the U.S. state of Missouri. Missouri was the last battleship commissioned by the United States and is best remembered as the site of the surrender of the Empire of Japan which ended World War II.
USS Arizona was a Pennsylvania-class battleship built for and by the United States Navy in the mid-1910s. Named in honor of the 48th state's recent admission into the union, the ship was the second and last of the Pennsylvania class of super-dreadnought battleships.

Piercing cold blast to feel subzero in central, northeastern US to kick off 2018
Cold air rivaling that of the past 100 years for early January will make it painful to be outdoors and may lead to damage in the central and northeastern United States.
AccuWeather RealFeel® Temperatures are projected to be below zero over much of the Northeast and well below zero in much of the Midwest.
People who rang in the new year in Times Square endured a temperature of 9 degrees Fahrenheit at midnight, which marked the second coldest ball drop on record in New York City. The coldest ball drop occurred a century ago with a midnight temperature of 1.
At least 30 states were experiencing below zero temperatures on New Year's Day morning.
For the first day of 2018, RealFeel temperatures 5 to 20 degrees below zero will be common. In the northern tier, RealFeel temperatures may dip as low as 30 to 40 degrees below zero.
Most low temperature records from the northern and central Plains to the mid-Atlantic and New England are likely to remain in tact.
However, in terms of the level of cold, actual temperatures in many locations will be in the lower 5 percentile for all years on record for early January, according to the National Weather Service.
Standout years for record cold in the Northeast at this point in the season were in 1880-81 and 1917-18. In the Midwest, the years 1967-68 and 1973-74 left a mark with subzero F cold.
While the level of cold will vary from one day to the next, indications are that the frigid weather will linger through the first week of January in the Central and Eastern states,
A major storm will track close enough to the East Coast of the United States to bring snow to some areas and windy conditions to much of the Atlantic Seaboard later this week.
The storm will have both direct and indirect impacts from Florida to Maine and Atlantic Canada.
Arctic air will remain in place and will spread southward into Florida as the storm brews a few hundred miles offshore over the Atlantic Ocean and races northward on Wednesday and Thursday.
During this period, the storm may undergo rapid strengthening, sometimes referred to as bombogenesis.
At this time AccuWeather meteorologists believe the heaviest snow from the storm will fall on Maine and New Brunswick, Canada, where a blizzard is forecast to unfold.
A blizzard is a storm that produces snow or blowing snow with winds in excess of 35 mph and a visibility of one-quarter of a mile or less for at least three consecutive hours.
There is the potential for not only a foot (30 cm) or more of snow to fall, in Maine and New Brunswick, but also the risk of hurricane-force winds and frigid air at the same time. Tremendous blowing and drifting snow is likely and some communities may be isolated for several days in the wake of the storm. Some of these same communities may be without power.
The storm is likely to track close enough to the coast throw some moisture over land in the mid-Atlantic and the Southeast states. That moisture will be in the form of snow to some areas of the Atlantic coast from the northeastern corner of Florida to the coastal areas of the Carolinas and Massachusetts.
Whether a few flakes or several inches of snow fall will depend on the exact track of the storm and the how quickly moisture is thrown westward as the storm strengthens.
There is a chance of enough snow to make roads slippery in Wilmington, North Carolina; Atlantic City, New Jersey; New York City and Boston. A significant amount of wind-driven snow may fall on Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

700 Pound Snake Pulled out of Lake in North Carolina
Giant 700 pound snake caught in lake in Proctor, North Carolina. The giant man eating python was measured at 98 feet long. Police were contacted to see if there have been any recently filed missing person reports as a snake this big could have surely eaten a human.
This giant snake is massive and just gorgeous, but it didn't take long to find out that the STORY behind it... was fake, just another hoax.
While the image is indeed real, I think the size of the giant snake could have been exaggerated due to the camera angle
Nevertheless, this snake is still huge, but where did it come from? The markings on it's skin looks similar to that of a reticulated python native to Southeast Asia. After playing around with a little Google translate, the mystery was finally solved.
This giant python came from Indonesia and after some rough translating, it turns out that it was discovered this last Thanksgiving near the village of Belinyu City. It was found by accident by a group of construction workers who severely injured the reptile while knocking down a large dead tree in which the python was sleeping inside of. The workers put the dying snake out of it's misery and buried it.
It's sad to see such an incredible animal killed, especially one that could have been a new world record size. I wish there were more pictures so we could get a better idea of just how large it was.
I really enjoyed learning about this amazing snake, if you guys have any cool wildlife stories or interesting animals that you think I might enjoy, tell me about it on Facebook

USS Hoga (YT-146)
This is my model of USS Hoga. The USS Hoga (YT-146) was a United States Navy yard tug named after the Sioux Indian word for fish. After World War II, the tug was known as the Port of Oakland and then the City of Oakland when it was a fireboat in that city.
Hoga was moored with other yard service craft near the drydocks at 1010 Dock when Pearl Harbor was attacked by Japanese forces on the morning of December 7, 1941. It assisted in the saving of many boats and lives there.
It is this shape I am trying to build my model. Not the weathered shape it is in now. It will be in 1:50 scale so quite small boat.

Hurricane Florence Will Hit East Coast as a 'Very Scary' Major Storm This Week - News Today
The Southeastern United States is bracing for Hurricane Florence. The hurricane’s center is expected to affect Bermuda and the Bahamas on Tuesday and Wednesday, and to hit North Carolina on Thursday, USA Today reported. North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia have all declared states of emergency, AccuWeather reported. On Monday, the Weather Channel tweeted, “#Hurricane #Florence is rapidly intensifying. Now with 105 mph maximum sustained winds. Expected to become a Cat. 3 hurricane today.” The coast could receive water as high as 15 feet, and inland areas could see up to 20 inches of rainfall, according to CNN’s Chad Myers. “This is [a] very scary rain event potentially setting up this week,” meteorologist Brett Rossi told USA Today. “Florence could dump a foot of rain in places that cannot handle it, making for a very scary flooding situation in some areas.” South Carolina officials said they were “preparing for the possibility of a large-scale disaster,” according to USA Today. “It is coming straight in,” South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster said on Sunday, The New York Times reported. “We are prepared to the nth degree. We’ll know more tomorrow, but based on what we know now, the situation is such that it is time to begin preparations.” The National Hurricane Center warned on Monday of “life-threatening impacts” from the storm. The Center wrote that, though “it is too soon to determine exact timing, location, and magnitude of these impacts,” residents from South Carolina to the mid-Atlantic area should be cautious of “storm surge at the coast, freshwater flooding from a prolonged and exceptionally heavy rainfall event inland, and damaging hurricane-force winds.” Hurricane Florence Will Hit East Coast as a 'Very Scary' Major Storm This Week - News Today
