Outer Banks (OBX) Roanoke Island, Manteo, NC
Description
Exploring The Outer Banks of North Carolina
The Outer Banks of North Carolina, also known at the OBX, is a place I’ve always wanted to visit for I’ve heard there are some striking similarities in the landscape there and to the east coast island I call home (Nantucket).
My friend Kirsten Alana and I flew into Norfolk, about a two hour drive down, to explore Dare Country in the Outer Banks for four days.
While you can’t control the weather, you can control how much fun you have in it. We found a great amount to do in the Outer Banks in all the elements: sunshine, grey skies, or sprinkles from the sky. Because we were kind of all over the place, I’m going to give you my favorites from the trip.
There’s so much to see and do from Duck all the way down to Hatteras Island.
We spent our first two nights in Manteo at the Tranquil Inn. One of my favorite activities was boring a sailboat just out back and sailing the Roanoke Sound with the husband and wife team behind Sail The Outer Banks.
Making the sea to table connection, we visited Oneal’s Seafood at the Southern end of Roanoke Island one rainy morning and watched the fisherman offload their catch.
A visit to the Outer Banks would not be complete without a local brew - We sampled four at wind powered Outer Banks Brewing Station in Kill Devil Hills.
Climb the 219 stairs to the top of Bodie Island Lighthouse in Cape Hatteras National Seashore and National Parks Service in Nags Head. The interior on the climb up is just as photogenic as the views are when you reach the top.
Up in Duck, stay ta the Sanderling Resort and do not miss having a long dinner at Kimball’s Kitchen. On property, bike, SUP, kayak, or laze around the pool and hot tub. Not far away, get an organic body treatment at the Aqua Restaurant + Spa. I loved my facial!!!
And of course seeing how sea turtles are rehabilitated was a special treat inside the Aquarium.
The trip wouldn’t be complete without hopping on a white horse and riding with Hatteras Island Horseback Riding.

The Other Coast - Soundside Outer Banks NC
WATCH IN 1080P. It's not just the ocean on the Outer Banks! Located to the east of the Outer Banks of North Carolina is the Atlantic Ocean and neighboring the western banks are the Currituck and Albemarle Sounds. The Currituck Sound borders the towns of Corolla, Duck and Southern Shores, and further south the Albemarle Sound is the western border for the towns of Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head.
There are several animal refuges that surround these sound waters, making this area a rich winter habitat for a wide variety of migrating water fowl. Long before guests flocked to the Outer Banks for beach vacations, it was the diverse wildlife in these waters and marshlands that brought visitors to hunt clubs in this region.
Three prominent Outer Banks tourist attractions are located on the Currituck Sound, including Corolla’s Whalehead Club and Currituck Beach Lighthouse and the Duck Town Park, all which provide beautifully landscaped grounds and memorable sound vistas.
Local water sport outfitters are located throughout the Outer Banks and provide sailing lessons, small boat and kayak tours, sunset cruises, pontoon boat and jet ski rentals and other adventurous options to explore the indigenous plant and wildlife on these much calmer sound waters.
Today, the sound is again becoming popular with vacationers, who embrace the water sport activities available on this shallow body of water. Parasailing, sea kayaking, stand up paddle boarding (SUP) and jet skiing are just a few options available during your stay.
For those who vacation in a soundfront home, be prepared for amazing water views and our famed North Carolina sunsets. Often sheltered from coastal winds, these homes provide a captivating waterfront haven for vacationing guests. Many homes have private piers, ideal for fishing and crabbing, and for those more adventurous souls, it’s easy to rent SUP boards, kayaks or canoes to enjoy during your stay.
The next time you plan a visit to the Outer Banks, we hope you’ll take time to enjoy all the wonderful perks of our other coast … the sound.

MANTEO, NORTH CAROLINA: Festival Park at Manteo, Roanoke Island | TRAVEL VLOG
Roanoke Island Festival Park is an interactive family attraction that celebrates the first English settlement in America. Visitors board and explore the park’s centerpiece, a representational ship called Elizabeth II, which looks just like one of the seven English ships from the Roanoke Voyage of 1585.
Return to shore and try traditional woodworking, play Elizabethan games, or watch the blacksmith fashion his wares at the Settlement Site. Search the canvas tents for goods and supplies, try on armor, and practice your Irish accent with some of the settlers.
Explore Coastal Algonquin culture and history in American Indian Town. The town represents an American Indian community similar to what the English explorers investigated and surveyed during their voyages to Roanoke Island and the surrounding area in the late 16th century. Two longhouses represent the historical homes of American Indians from the region. One of the longhouses interprets the home of a leader from the community, and stretches over 30 feet long. A smaller and partially completed longhouse includes an interactive component that invites visitors to help complete the structure and also features a Dance Circle. Both areas contain interactive exhibitory that focuses on the developing relationship between the American Indian and English peoples during the late 16th century.
