Indian submarine explosion traps 18 sailors
Indian submarine explosion traps 18 sailors
18 sailors are feared to be trapped inside the submarine which caught fire at a Mumbai base on Tuesday night. No causes are yet to be found, and rescue efforts are still on-going. According to our correspondent, this incident is not the first to occur on the submarine: a soldier died in an explosion onboard the very same boat in February 2010.
Moreover, this explosion comes as the Indian Army is expanding its forces, unveiling last week the first aircraft carrier build on Indian territory.

A Navy spokesman said efforts were being made to determine the safety of the personnel and salvage the submarine.
The 16-year-old Russian-made submarine, INS Sindhurakshak, had recently returned from Russia after undergoing an overhaul and upgrade, according to an analyst for the independent Jane's Information Group.

Newsfirst_ Indian submarine hit by explosion at Mumbai port
At least 18 sailors are feared to be trapped on board an Indian submarine that caught fire after an explosion in a Mumbai port, officials say.
The fire has now been brought under control but the vessel is partly submerged at its berth. Rescue workers are at the scene.
Indian media reports say that many sailors jumped to safety and some of the injured were taken to hospital.
It is unclear what caused the explosion on the INS Sindhurakshak.
The explosion took place after midnight and it took fire-fighters several hours to douse the blaze.
The navy says the submarine has been badly damaged and an inquiry has been set up to look into the causes of the incident.
There are some people who are trapped on board, we are in the process of trying to rescue them, we suspect it to be in the range of 18, Navy spokesman PVS Satish was quoted by the Reuters news agency as saying.
We will not give up until we get to them, he added.
Smoke from the blaze could be seen in many parts of the city, reports said.
The INS Sindhurakshak is said to be one of the 10 Kilo-class submarines bought from Russia between 1986 and 2000. It is equipped with Russian Club-S cruise missile system.
The vessel returned from Russia last year after undergoing an upgrade and sea trials began last October, reports said.
In February 2010, a sailor on board the submarine was killed by a fire that broke out in the battery compartment of the submarine while it was docked at the Vishakhapatnam naval base - it was later that year that it was sent to Russia for the refit.
This explosion comes just days after India's navy launched its first home-built aircraft carrier, hailed by officials as a crowning glory.
Last year, India bought a Russian Nerpa nuclear submarine for its navy on a 10-year lease from Russia at cost of nearly $1bn (£645bn), making it part of a select group of nations to operate nuclear-powered submarines.
India and Russia are long-time allies and Russia supplies about 70% of India's military hardware.

A number of Indian sailors are feared dead after an explosion and fire on board a submarine at a base in Mumbai.
Earlier the Navy said 18 crew members were trapped on the vessel, which is powered conventionally.
A team of divers was mobilised and 16 fire engines sent to the scene.
Later it was reported that bodies had been recovered.
It's a great loss to all of us, the greatest tragedy of recent times. I feel sad about that. I feel sad also, about those Navy personnel who lost their lives in the service of the country, said India's Defence Minister Arackaparambil Kurien Antony.
It is the Navy's worst loss since the war with Pakistan in 1971.
The submarine had returned from an upgrade in Russia earlier this year. In 2010 there was another accident when a sailor was killed as it docked in port.
Just two days before this latest tragedy, the defence minister had been proudly unveiling a new aircraft carrier.
It takes some of the sheen away because over the last few days there was a lot of satisfaction and pride in the country that though these were modest steps - launching an aircraft carrier is a big deal for a country that till 10 years ago was not even making a scooter, forget about a car, said defence expert Uday Bhaskar.
With the launch of the Vikrant, India's first home-built aircraft carrier, the country joined a select group of advanced nations.
