NBC NEWS Player, Beau Biden Funeral in Delaware: Obamas, Clintons to Attend
Vice President Joe Biden will mourn his eldest son at the funeral for former Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden, whose death to brain cancer one week ago triggered an outpouring of grief in Delaware and beyond.
President Barack Obama, accompanied by his family, was to deliver remarks during the full Catholic Mass honoring Beau Biden in Wilmington, Delaware, where political luminaries like Hillary Rodham Clinton and former President Bill Clinton were also gathering to pay their respects.
Biden's two surviving children — Hunter Biden and Ashley Biden — were also to remember their brother, as was Gen. Ray Odierno, the former top U.S. commander in Iraq, where Beau Biden was once deployed.
St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church typically seats less than 1,000 people, but portable seats were being added to accommodate what officials expected to be a massive showing by politicians and Delaware residents alike.
The funeral for Beau Biden, who died at age 46, caps three days of public mourning in which the vice president and his family have been both the consolers and the consoled.
The vice president, whose wife and daughter were killed in a car crash four decades ago, developed a reputation over the years for possessing a deep ability to comfort those in grief, and is often called upon to eulogize fellow American leaders. Saturday's Mass honoring his own son is a reversal of roles of sorts for Biden, who in 2012 spoke of his son's service in Iraq as he comforted a group of grieving military families.
When he came home — it's going to sound strange to you — we felt almost a little guilty because he came home, Biden said then. Because there's so many funerals I've attended, so many bases I've visited. And you know, not all losses are equal. Not all losses are equal.
White House officials said the choice of Obama to deliver remarks reflected the tight personal relationship that Joe Biden and the president have developed after more than six years together in the White House. In the hours after Beau Biden died, Obama called the vice president to offer his condolences and was invited to give the remarks.

City of Wilmington and West Side Grows Commemorate Renovated Father Tucker Park with Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony
Resident-driven community development process, in partnership with government, continues to rebuild the West Side from within
Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki today joined with West Side Grows Together, city and state officials, and local residents for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the completion of the community-led renovations to Father Tucker Park at 9th and Scott Streets on Wilmington’s West Side. Father Tucker is the third recently refurbished park on the City’s West Side, following the completion last year of Fourth Street Park and Connell Street Park.
All three park projects were part of a unique, resident-driven community development process coordinated by West Side Grows Together in partnership with the city, state and federal governments, which is helping to rebuild the West Side community. “I continue to be impressed and encouraged by the outpouring of support and participation by the community for projects such as this,” said Mayor Purzycki. “We can accomplish so much more by working in tandem to strengthen neighborhoods and improve lives. This new park is another example of what can be achieved when communities and government work together to address a pressing need.”
Today’s ceremony included remarks from Mayor Purzycki, Wilmington City Council President Hanifa Shabazz, Director of Parks and Recreation Kevin F. Kelley, Sr., 6th District Council Representative Yolanda McCoy, State Senator Robert Marshall, State Representative Gerald Brady, Paula Roddy of Friends of Father Tucker Park, and Sarah Lester, Director of Cornerstone West CDC.
Local schools and community centers were engaged in the design process of Father Tucker Park from the outset. Judy White, Principal of St. Anthony’s of Padua Grade School, explains, “Our students loved the competition of creating four separate park designs and having the student body vote on their favorite. A lot of thought went into making sure that this was an all-inclusive park that could serve the recreational needs of people of all ages. Thank you for giving our toddlers, students, adults, and senior citizens a nice and safe place to play. We will put it to good use for sure!”
Upgrades to the 20,000 square-foot park and playground cost around $600,000, half of which came from a National Parks Service grant of $306,000 for construction and design improvements. The park’s renovations included removal of all paving, play equipment and fencing, and installation of new play equipment with wood fiber safety surfacing, exercise pathways, benches, picnic areas, and a spray shower with colorful stained concrete. A new feature of the park is a storm water management plan to direct water off site and divert it to collection areas away from the playground.
Mayor Purzycki today acknowledged the remaining contributors to the Father Tucker Park project which, in addition to the City of Wilmington, include West Side Grows Together, the Delaware State Legislature, the Friends of Parks Groups, Locus Partners, RAS Landscape Architects, Rock Solid Construction, Inc., the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) , 5th and 7th District Neighborhood Planning Councils, the Nemours Foundation, the Longwood Foundation, Bank of America, the Wells Fargo Regional Foundation, and the Delaware Economic Development Office’s Neighborhood Building Blocks Fund.
Councilman Bob Williams looks forward to the updated park in his District. “Thank you to everyone who participated in this park renovation,” said Williams. “This was truly a community effort. From the design, through planning and completion, this park will be a neighborhood treasure for years to come.”
West Side Grows Together is a coalition of Wilmington's West Side residents, businesses, churches and community groups working together to improve and strengthen their neighborhoods. In 2012, the West Side Revitalization Plan was unveiled which outlined the community’s vision for its future and the steps needed to make that vision a reality. Partners work together in five main areas: community pride, businesses and jobs, youth opportunities, great parks, and housing choices. Father Tucker Park is another example of engaged citizens bringing together resources and other citizens to improve neighborhood green spaces.

President Obama Delivers Beau Biden Eulogy, president Obama speaks At Beau Biden Funeral. President barack Obama to Biden family: The world noticed. They noticed. They felt it. Beau lives on. President Obama: Beau Biden did in 46 years what most of us couldn’t do in 146 ; he left nothing in the tank. Beau Biden was an original. He was a good man. A man of character. A man who loved deeply and was loved in return. —President Obama, Obama: It's no secret that a lot of what made Beau the way he was is how much he loved and admired his dad.(CNN) President Barack Obama is leading hundreds of mourners paying solemn tribute to Beau Biden, a beloved son of Delaware and the eldest child of grief-stricken Vice President Joe Biden, who died last week of brain cancer at only 46. Obama, delivered a eulogy, at a Roman Catholic funeral mass at St. Anthony of Padua Church, in the Little Italy section of Wilmington, where the Biden family has frequently worshiped. Beau Biden mourned. Beau Biden's funeral cortege arrived at the church heralded by a pipe band. The vice president, wearing dark glasses, and the rest of his family, all looking bereft, formed up behind the hearse. Biden occasionally whispered in the ear of Beau's widow Hallie, and comforted his son's two children, Natalie and Hunter.
The casket, covered in an American flag, was removed and carried gently into the church with full military honors, reflecting Beau's service as a captain in the Army National Guard in Iraq.
Earlier, Obama, first lady Michelle Obama, daughters Sasha and Malia and his mother-in-law Marian Robinson, all dressed in black, left the White House, where the American flag stood at half-staff to honor Beau Biden.
The first person in line for the service arrived at 4:30 a.m., and by breakfast time, the line of mourners stretched around the block of the St. Anthony of Padua Church, in the Little Italy section of Wilmington, where the Bidens have frequently worshipped.
Obama's eulogy will be both a show of respect for Beau Biden, the former Delaware attorney general, with whom he had a personal relationship and a sign of the deep bond that has grown up between the president and his deputy.
Friends & family gather to honor Beau Biden, V.P.'S son 02:09
Over the last seven or eight years, the Obama family has grown very close to the Biden family and the President did have a personal relationship with Beau Biden, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters Friday. Earnest said the President felt the death in a very personal way, but was also looking forward to spending some time tomorrow celebrating Beau's life.
Joe Biden's role as a grieving father is not without irony in itself. The vice president has become one of the most sought after eulogists in Washington as his painful personal history -- he lost his first wife and an infant daughter in a car crash in 1972 -- has made him especially compassionate to the tragedies of others.
Musicians performing at the event include Coldplay vocalist Chris Martin, who had heard through a family friend that Beau Biden liked his music and volunteered to attend the ceremony, a White House official said.
Saturday's funeral follows two days of mourning and memorial events for Beau Biden, which has showcased the deep emotional anguish the vice president and his family are enduring following his death a week ago.
Some people waited five hours just to get into see the casket on Friday.
