Suceava is the largest city and the seat of Suceava County, situated in the historical region of Bukovina from Central Europe and north-eastern Romania respectively. The city was the capital of the medieval Principality of Moldavia from 1388 to 1565.Between 1775 and 1918, the city was the third largest urban settlement from the Duchy of Bukovina , a constituent province of the Austrian Empire, subsequently a crown land within Austria-Hungary, being only surpassed by Cernăuți and Rădăuți to the north. Throughout this period of time, it fulfilled the task of an important, strategically-located commercial border town with the then Romanian Old Kingdom , receiving a large influx of German-speaking settlers in the process .After 1918, along with the rest of Bukovina, Suceava became part of the enlarged Kingdom of Romania. Nowadays, it is a significant economic urban centre of the Romanian Nord-Est development region.
